its ridiculous how many people believe this, im 14 and i go to the gym on a 2:1 basis, i ask some of my friends do they wanna come with me and i kept gettin the same answer 'weightlifting stunts your growth', if anything weightlifting promotes growth by releasing hormones into your body (hence why im 2nd tallest in class at 5'5 (167)) thanks scott for busting another myth :D
@UncleAndy97 Your 14 and 5'5 thats like a dwarf!! I'm 13 and 5'9 and I'm the second tallest in my class!! I think that just proves that it does stun your growth!!
Scott, in the 19th century something called "t-shirts" were invented. It covers up your torso for a nice comfortable fit. Look it up if you dont believe me.
Oh so its just a consequence that most muscular guys are shorter then 6 foot like your self ? , when you start wearing and tearing your muscles at a young age it interrupts your normal growth and prevents you from growing to your full potential aka your height and even bone structure. thats why this midget is 5 " 10, and no that is not the perfect height you moron.
I have a two friends who are identical twins. They are about 3 inches different in height. The shorter one works out all the time and has a very athletic build. The taller one has more of a distance runner build and doesn't dedicate to working out. I'm not saying it stunts your growth but this is an example of where you can compare basically the two same subjects. One worked out the other didn't and they both grew up with the same basic lifestyle.
i think what scott is referring to is BODY weight training a big difference to weights training. Eg Body weight- in the gym do jumping squats while holding a light weight infront of you Compared to Weight training where 13 yr old kids have 300 pound weights on their shoulders expected to do squats with perfect form
lol these are shitty ass examples. When kids climb trees their not doing it to build muscles so it can't really effect them, and when they do push ups in football practice, its nothing compared to the reps people do at the gym.
In some cases enviroment / lifestyle is more importand than genetics. I've seen countless people including cousins of my outgrow everyone in their family. With atleast 10-20cm
I started weight training when I was like 13 and I was about 5'7'' back then.. I'm 16 1/2 now and my height is 6'1''. so weight training definitely doesn't stunt your growth!!
Oh, and you expect we're all going to take a 14yo kid's word over Scott's word? Ever thought of it you might just BE a smaller kid? 173 is a perfectly fine height for your age.
I started training 2 years ago, very regularly, and have been training frequently without any "rest weeks" since. I was about 5'9" when I started and I am now 6'00". I don't believe it stunts your growth. In fact, I'd imagine it may help growth because weight training releases growth hormone?
Im 15 , im 5"3 and i go gym, i dont lift weights. I have a really active lifestyle, i swam , play soccer gaelic hurling , kickboxing and run a lot, could all of that stop me from growing because all of my energy and food is going to exercise instead of growing and producing more hormones to make me grow? Should i start eating alot more? Please reply
for the guy who talked about a twin one is generally taller than the other n to the guy sayin weightlifting is different you are supposed to be able to lift your own body weight so how in the world will curling 20 lbs stunt your growth no one said to go lift 200 lb this is where your common sense comes in you can't expect to go at 14 and want to lift the same thing as guys over 20 you start small and gradually increase to sum it up scott is right
I dunt no man I do workout I'm almost 16, and I'm 5 10 in a half I just hope it doesn't affect me and I get to 6" the doc said I will, plus do dumbbell flys affect your growth? Or curls? Or tricep extension?
Lol.. Doing pullups, push ups, running, jogging is way different than lifting weights.. I believe that if you are under 14, you should not be lifting weights because your bones are so damn fragile and it can ruin the growth plate.. Instead, you should be doing strength training/exercise.. pull ups, pushups, boxing, hiking, running etc, and these are way different than weight lifting.. Actually this can actually improve your height. Heavy lifting will stunt a kid best to believe...
Hey Scott, I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from working out or going to the gym at any age, but my bf&his identical twin brother are an interesting case study for this. My bf's twin started serious lifting as a teen, while he didn't. As adults there's now around 0.5-1 inch difference in their heights. Apart from this they are 100% identical! So perhaps weight training does have an effect on development (they think so), but what this tells us is this: if it does, the difference is minimal!
@coxy0n360 first, what exercises r u doing? 15 lbs doesnt sound like that much, but as long as once you reach 15 reps your muscle is tired/ failing, its ok. also what about sets, diet, ect?
Its just my point of view, but lifting weight will probably stunt your growth if you use heavy exercises that falls on you also without proper techniques, like barbell squat, if you do exercises on machines like lat pulldown, machine rows, etc, I think it should be fine for teens.
Thanks man. I've been asking myself this question for years. i'm 13 years old and play ball and now i know that i still can train without ending up short . thanks
Gym doesn't stunt ur growth at all dont worry guys im 16 and after 7 months i was 5'7ft and now im 5'11 gym increased my height i also was doing stretch and hanging everyday and i finaly after all hard work increased my height and also get riped body so dont worry about nonsense gym can just help you :)
skott when i was i kid i dont remember dead lifting or squading 200 pounds. But how can you say that pressing your spine with more than 100 pounds will not damage your growth plates!! I wish that what you say is true because i am 17 and every time i lift weight i feel really bad because ii dont want to stop any pottential growth that might happen to me.
ive never heard of it stunting your growth, but a friend of mine (adult male) who has been into weight lifting for many years said it has made him shorter... he said his doctor claimed its normal because of the weights compressing the spine. He didnt lose a lot of height though.
a lot of my friends actually grew after they started lifting more because of the increased HGH released into the bloodstream and that they also sleep more cause they're dead tired.
@loolfactorie Simply running and jumping applies pressure onto the long bones in your legs and bones in your spine equal to 3x or more of your normal body weight, so what you said is completely false
After 16 years old the body has grown, 17 years old you can start weight training and will not stunt ur growth, but when you start training hard at 11 years old, expect to grow short because ur bones have not developed enough nor have you lived long enough to endure such pressure, so please guy, put on a fucking shirt and shut the fuck up. Lee Priest, grown man, IFBB bodybuilder, 5'4 started training extremely hard at 11 years old, Richard Sandrak 20 years old, 5'2, started at like 7 years old.
@acidee100 could you start working out at 14-15 years old? My friend is 15 he started at 13 with weights, he is now 5'11 when he started he was 5'5 and he is still growing.
At 13 is fine, if ur not being trained profesionally, I doubt and I kno for a fact ur friend didnt start training hard at 13, meaning squatting, dead lifts, heavy weights, and not working out more than 5 days a week for more than an hour a day.
But if he had done all that at 13 then he would have been short, Look at Lee Priest, he was ripped at age 12, by age 15 he was already squatting, dead lifting, hes 5'4! What grown man, 200+ pounds is 5'4?
This guy meng..First off daily activity is NOT the same as weight lifting, when u play with ur friends as a kid you get pushed, hit, true, but weight training involves putting much more pressure on ur bones, legs, back, specially for young bodybuilders who squat(10-14 years old), yes you piece of shit its different, I get mad when things are not said the right way or truthfully, weight training puts A LOT more stress on ur muscles, weight training should NOT be done before 16 years old.
well ive known a kid who has been weight lifting since the age of 8 and ive seen that in high school hes only 5 foot 6 but thats the only thing that applies to this conversation
That caption at 1:21 is my life story, at like 13 my mum wouldnt sign me up at the gym because it would "stunt my growth", absolute horse shit. but when i got to about 5"10 and i stopped growing she just let me go anyway.
Hi im 14 and im 5 foot 3. I also weigh 115 pounds. im starting to lift 15 pounds with 5 repitions of various excersies. My muscles are sore after but im not hurting my joints. I dont want to stunt my growth because i am already a smaller kid. Also on top of that i do chinups squats pushups tricep dips etc. do you think by doing this im stunting my growth at all??
Kids play actively in more of an aerobic sense. Sure they strain their muscles and bones to an extent....but to introduce resistance training with weights is a completely different strain. Maybe you should talk about the mental condition of "height neurosis". its essentially the only reason people worry about stunting their growth. Then again...you arent a doctor.
@jtgtjtgt During running there is more shearing forces / pressure on the joints than during squatting, unless you can squat more than 4 times your body weight. Simply standing on one leg will equal you squatting your bodyweight.
@insertnamehere568 LOL I am 13 and I have been going to the gym for 3 months and I can lift 30 kg and dont worry it wont stunt a shit its just a myth !! :)
im abou 5 9' and i just turned 15. im about 160 pounds with about 7 percent body fat. but i feel like ive gotten taller but not widder if that makes sense
Im 13 and 5-5, im supposed to be 6-3 and grow in 9th or 10th grade. Im 93 pounds also. My whole basketball jv team is gonna lift but I don't want to stunt my growth. I also want to gain at least 20 pounds within a year what do I do?
For people asking if they will grow more, it's impossible to say, as everyone is different. If you don't grow as much or as fast as someone else, it could come down to genetics, diet, etc. By the way I like how all these 14 year olds post their height on here like we give 2 shits...
Weight training while in your teenage years is still up for debate. It depends on the intensity, exercises, weights used, among a dozen other factors. It can be very safe and it can be very unsafe depending on what you're doing. It depends on what you're doing and how you're doing it. Most teenagers cannot afford a trainer. When I was a teen I learned by watching others in the gym, some of whom were doing it wrong and practicing unsafe things.
@it966 Your 5'9 at 14 years of age. Jesus your a big boy :) Take into account how long youve been working out and reasess that statement. If youve been working out 2-3 months and you you think you havnt grown then its not down to weight training.. Height changes in a shot peiod at your age are not that noticeable over a short period of time....
I dont know man, i first went to a gym when i was 15 for a few monts and i never
gain any height from that moment.I 'm 5,10 and maybe i wasnt supposed to go
any taller and its just coincidence but notice that both of my older brothers are 4 inces taller than me.Just stick to sports why bother with weights.
I'D think tha's true i started at 16 now im 23 and my height's 1.79 mtts im not too tall, well i gotta say im french-canadian n we arent to tall at all lol..
Well i am 15 and i started weightlifting at 13 and currently i am 6ft 1". I go the gym 3-4 times a week and play soccer 3 times a week, i do not think it affects your height and i am quite tall in my family.
wel scott im only 14 doing weights since i was 13 and i didnt grow since last summer?? im 5 foot 6 and most of my family is tall?? not saying your wrong but i duno why i not growing
@deathcrusade7 yes i eat perfect right amount of fats and carbs and eat 20g protein a day and only weigh 125 lbs. i take protein and creatine but thats not part of it right??
cool and i always taught it would mostley cause well i would think theyd hurt your bones and stop them from wanting to grow but question does ressistance burn fat i heard it can?
I was going at a gym where the supervisor was horrible and I knew from other people that what I was doing was wrong...thankfully I left that gym fast....
@AGVZ777 Sorry I know when he's pumped up he's muscular, but how old is he? so he's not just really big him self, but he is strong as hell that's for sure
I just recently turned 15. i'm only around 5'7" and 135 pounds. i play football and bball for my school. i wanna be at least 5'9" 5'10", 150+ pounds by my sophmore year so i compete alot better and get alot of playing time. i've always started each year i've played football since pee wee, middle school, and JV.. I'll be on varsity next year playing slot reciever/hybrid-back and corner and i need to get bigger if i want decent playing team. any tips on how to reach my goal?
im 14, 5'7", 120lbs and i started working out this year im stil growing but compared to some people in my age im a little short,i know a bunch of 14-16 year old 5'11" to 6'.An officier in my air cadets squadron who's also the sports and fitness officier said that working out in puberty would affect your growth only if you do above bodyweight exercise.I do mostly 30 lbs workouts and an occasional 115-135 bench press is this ok at my age or should i wait???
I was 15 when I started lifting weights and I think I sort overstressed my body. I think I lifted more weights then I should have without consuming the amount of food I should have and I guess I've stunned my height.
@8443744 i don't think you stunted your growth... but if your that worried about it you could possibly buy some tribulus(not sure of spelling) . its natural testosterone booster and could possibly trigger some kind of growth. dont count on it tho. use as directed on the bottle!
my testimony is : been working out on andoff since I started puberty. its been 2 yrs 3 months and I gained 17 cm's in height. i am now 1 cm taller than my dad and my brothers did'nt stop growing until the age of 22. so I just totaly blew the myth out of the water. oh btw I only bench 58kg's and so i think thats why. because I didnt break my growth plates. XD cheers. oh and im 5'5 atm.
its ridiculous how many people believe this, im 14 and i go to the gym on a 2:1 basis, i ask some of my friends do they wanna come with me and i kept gettin the same answer 'weightlifting stunts your growth', if anything weightlifting promotes growth by releasing hormones into your body (hence why im 2nd tallest in class at 5'5 (167)) thanks scott for busting another myth :D

What grown man, 200+ pounds is 5'4?
acidee100 6 months ago
@Nicsvideos96
Its not a myth, people think it is because its rare to see this happen, but it happens.
acidee100 6 months ago
This guy meng..First off daily activity is NOT the same as weight lifting, when u play with ur friends as a kid you get pushed, hit, true, but weight training involves putting much more pressure on ur bones, legs, back, specially for young bodybuilders who squat(10-14 years old), yes you piece of shit its different, I get mad when things are not said the right way or truthfully, weight training puts A LOT more stress on ur muscles, weight training should NOT be done before 16 years old.
acidee100 6 months ago
well ive known a kid who has been weight lifting since the age of 8 and ive seen that in high school hes only 5 foot 6 but thats the only thing that applies to this conversation

calco77 7 months ago

The notion that weight lifting stunts growth is simply the result of illogical thinking and stupidity.
The3nlightened0ne 7 months ago
5"10 = perfect height? lols no.
6"1 = most aesthetically pleasing height
sharpes123 7 months ago
@sharpes123 I agree . Anything past 6''0 is good . 5 foot is short peoples height
jtgtjtgt 7 months ago
scott how tall are you?
DTREMOR333 7 months ago
Maybe the parents were not muscular at all so they're jealous if their kid is. That's why they create this myth. lol jk
sdurgefafd 7 months ago
6'5 is the perfect height not short ass 5'11
jtgtjtgt 7 months ago
yes it is, its not tall or short
sports5991 7 months ago
@sports5991 No it;s short man anything less than 6''0 is GAY
jtgtjtgt 7 months ago
Kids play actively in more of an aerobic sense. Sure they strain their muscles and bones to an extent....but to introduce resistance training with weights is a completely different strain. Maybe you should talk about the mental condition of "height neurosis". its essentially the only reason people worry about stunting their growth. Then again...you arent a doctor.
HammerBT 7 months ago
does squatting stunt growth? thats what i heard...
TheSituation510 7 months ago
@TheSituation510 Actually yes because it puts too much stress on your bones which in turn causes them to quit growing
jtgtjtgt 7 months ago
@jtgtjtgt During running there is more shearing forces / pressure on the joints than during squatting, unless you can squat more than 4 times your body weight. Simply standing on one leg will equal you squatting your bodyweight.
thomaswolff90 7 months ago
@TheSituation510 With upper body exercises this isn't a problem though

Im 13 and 5-5, im supposed to be 6-3 and grow in 9th or 10th grade. Im 93 pounds also. My whole basketball jv team is gonna lift but I don't want to stunt my growth. I also want to gain at least 20 pounds within a year what do I do?
freshlemonzzz 8 months ago
For people asking if they will grow more, it's impossible to say, as everyone is different. If you don't grow as much or as fast as someone else, it could come down to genetics, diet, etc. By the way I like how all these 14 year olds post their height on here like we give 2 shits...
gtslmfao 8 months ago
Weight training while in your teenage years is still up for debate. It depends on the intensity, exercises, weights used, among a dozen other factors. It can be very safe and it can be very unsafe depending on what you're doing. It depends on what you're doing and how you're doing it. Most teenagers cannot afford a trainer. When I was a teen I learned by watching others in the gym, some of whom were doing it wrong and practicing unsafe things.

@it966 How long have you been working out and not gained height?
HalfTimesTwo 8 months ago
@it966 Your 5'9 at 14 years of age. Jesus your a big boy :) Take into account how long youve been working out and reasess that statement. If youve been working out 2-3 months and you you think you havnt grown then its not down to weight training.. Height changes in a shot peiod at your age are not that noticeable over a short period of time....

I was 15 when I started lifting weights and I think I sort overstressed my body. I think I lifted more weights then I should have without consuming the amount of food I should have and I guess I've stunned my height.
I'm 16 now and almost 5'10.
Any sugesstions on how I can start growing again?
8443744 11 months ago
@8443744 i don't think you stunted your growth... but if your that worried about it you could possibly buy some tribulus(not sure of spelling) . its natural testosterone booster and could possibly trigger some kind of growth. dont count on it tho. use as directed on the bottle!

XD cheers. oh and im 5'5 atm.
