I loved this commentator who says that Ken Morrow doesn't know how to lose. It is such a candid and true statement but to this day, I wish Morrow would have gone over to Herb Brooks
and shook his hand because they had so much history from 1980 between them both.
"ken morrow does not know what its like to lose" from the announcer. Indeed, Ken Morrow had a storybook run after helping win the 1980 Olympics hockey final against the USSR. I just wish that Ken would have gone over to Herb Brooks to give him a hug rather than skating away to the locker room
@seffkoful Yes, and without all the lame penalties they call in today's game. Bodies were flying around in this OT, and there more than likely would be power plays in the current NHL.
@steve19390 as a hockey fan .... i agree with you , only two-three playoff series in the nhl history are comparable with 1984 Battle of New York , and 1980s and 1990s hockey was unbelievable
@seffkoful Yes, 80s and 90s hockey rocked. I was 15 when this series took place. I cannot get into hockey like I used to. I think things got ruined after the strike, and Bettman had alot of rules changed. The game became more of a specialty teams game and a European style to it. I am from the Philadelphia area, and the Flyers and Rangers had some battles in the 80s, much more physical than today. Also, I hate the shootout, can't stand it. Oh well, enough complaining, take it easy.
@steve19390 John Vanbiesbrouck was great goaltender , i always remember him for 1996 playoff run with florida, but i think the rangers made it to the Wales conference finals, but their run ended , Patrick Roy was unreal in this series especially in game three, Vanbiesbrouck was rookie too or no ?
@seffkoful No, I've been a Rangers fan since this series. I hated the Islanders, and although the Rangers lost this series, they won my over with their grit. Unfortunately the next year the Flyers knocked them out of the playoffs but in 1986, they knocked the Flyers out in the first round. My favorite players were Reijo Ruotsalaninen and John Vanbiesbrouck. I think Esposito ruined this team when he traded Kelly Miller and Mike Ridley for Bobby Carpenter.
I remember this game, but didn't see it. Had to listen to it on the radio. no cable in those days. funny to see sourpuss brent sutter as a young guy jumping up & down looking happy. and barry beck, as usual, on the sidelines with his arm in a sling.
Not many people would agree with this , but in overtime i would much rather have Nystrom , Goring and Bourne out there over Trottier and Bossy . I seen enough game's where they just seemed to be 'burnt-out ' by the time overtime rolled around .
biggest injustice in sports history was watching the islanders win 4 cups in a row in the early 80's with their lame fan base!
it's sweet to see what's happening to them now in 2011 and the future is even bleaker with wang probably moving them out of shlong island, after 3 more seasons!!
This is a call to action for all Islander AND Ranger fans....... GO TO AS MANY ISLES GAMES THIS YEAR AS YOU CAN!!! If you are a NYR fan (like me) who lives on the Island (I used to...alas I now live in the hockey wasteland of Las Vegas....... GO WRANGLERS!! lol) go to the coliseum as often as you can, and Isles fans...... GET OUT TO THE GAMES!!! I love this rivalry, it is one of the best in sports, and I do not want to see their history moved to Kansas City! GO TO THE GAMES!!
I feel the same way you do, and I'm a Rangers' fan. I DON'T want to see the Islanders move. It would be a dark day for hockey and deprive us of our greatest rivalry. The Rangers vs. Islanders playoff series were pure hockey gold.
This gives me chills even more so than Nystrom at 7:11 in 1980. These are two teams who threw absolutely everything that they had at the other, with two of the most legendary coaches to ever stand behind the bench. An epic battle. And a great screen by Flats, even while being tripped up, to stay in front.
Now, of course, our two teams can't even make the fucking playoffs, and the prospects don't look good for either of us in the near future. My, how we have fallen.
@goisles@goisles i dunno if the rangers have really fallen, they were a flawed but good team in the early 80s that could never get past the islanders after '79 because they were just too good....not much has changed in the last 20+ years (except they don't lose to the islanders in the playoffs every year)
amazingly every team that beat the rangers in the playoffs from 79-87 either won the cup or went to the finals
Classic! helluva OT by both teams--end to end all the way--Bobby Bourne starts hustling at the Ranger blue line into his own end, ends up near Billy Smith and skates all the way to the Ranger net and gets a shot on net!! Maloney stopped at point blank and Morrow scoring. A classic! I was wondering why Morrow did not shake hands with Herb at the end--unless I missed something. maybe there was a falling out after the Olympics? Herb was the man. A great guy!
@mendopato did I say the rangers are as successful as the yankees? However their history, they'll exist long after the islanders move out of that shithole of theirs and finally cease to exist. Based on attendance figures, they don't sell out a playoff game(unless they were hosting the Rangers-who always help the attendance at the shithole in the uniondale nigger ghetto.
What's interesting about this overtime is that Bossy misses the net 3 times! Very unusual for Bossy, who once said that when he missed the net, he felt like a golfer who missed a 2-foot putt.
@mrceebees14 The Islanders aren't successful as any of those teams. You have to count the horrible years as well. And, percentage wise, the islanders have had many more. They are the Mets of hockey
@MrStones64 Rangers are certainly not the Yankees of hockey then, their history sucks too much to have that...but salary wise, yes they are the completely less talented, overpayed version of the Yankees. =)
Its too bad the Islanders fans are so horrible, they will cause the team to move to another city. A real shame for a team with such history.
Rangers got their revenge 10 years after this by thrashing the Islanders in a 4 game sweep, outscoring them 22-3. Islanders never recovered from that total decimation the Rangers layed upon them, and their pathetic fans.
The only claim to fame is where they play, that is it. The fact the Islanders and Devils have more winning then the losers at MSG in the last 25 years shows that.
Time for you to wake up, the Rangers are and always have been losers.
There is no hope when you are a Rangers fan.......none.
1984 the Isles and Rangers were very evenly matched. In 1994 it was lopsided, you had the Rangers who nearly won the Presidents trophy and owned the division starting in November. Then you had the Isles who were not above .500 the entire season until the very last game of the season when they made the playoffs edging out the Panthers. 1994 was the worst Isles team by the numbers to enter the playoffs in the teams history.
Islanders are historically losers. 4 cups don't make up for a sad franchise. Their fans don't show up except when the rangers are in to beat their brains in. Gretzky didn't fake shit. Billy the douchebag fakes being a human being. He certainly isn't a hockey player. He should try the middle of the ice. I would have loved him trying shit on a real irishman, terry taz oreilly..
How many teams would kill for just 1 cup? Let alone doing it 4 straight times.
Who will ever beat 19 straight playoff series wins in any sport? The rule is, "records are meant to be broken," that one will never be........that says a ton.
Billy got the job done, and any other fan on another team would have loved to have him and if they don't they are just plain stupid. Winning is winning, you don't like it? Blow me.
Historical losers are the Rangers who own nearly every category of the word from worst lopsided loss RedWings 15 Rangers 5 1955 to most first round exits in the playoffs. The Rangers are the post child for losing.
@mrceebees14 not in more recent years. Let's stick with something other than the stone age. The islanders successes will never be again. The organization sucks. I'd rather at least have the opportunity of the postseason, which the icelanders don't have.
@mrceebees14 real intelligent, douchebag. Unfortunately for you, it's the truth. No one could ever deny 4 cups, but the organization has been a disaster since. They don't sell out the rare occasions they're in the playoffs, unless of course they're playing the rangers.. and then the Nassau Mausoleum is half blueshirt fans.
@mrceebees14 douchebag: It does matter-it means the islanders don't exist as a team, nobody cares, they have no fan base. They're a scumbag team. Get a real home town..hockey fans for the most part aren't too intelligent when they root for the islanders. And by the way, mr. douchebag, '79 and '94 were playoffs when the islanders couldn't beat the rangers in regulation.. I've been watching hockey since before the iceholes were even a team, so I know more about hockey than you. Isles suck
You just repeated what you had said in your last post....minus the "niggerville" comment.
I have been watching hockey longer than you and you have no idea what you are talking about.
I put up facts, you put up crybaby "you suck' blah blah blah 12 year old banter with some racism thrown in. Do you still live at home? Do you have a job? Have you ever given a girl your phone number without having to follow it up with a credit card number?
Talking about sucking, what happened with the habs?
you can rip messier and gretzky that is fine Adam GRAVES if you knew the kind of guy he is and all the charity work he does and the fact he NEVER denies a autograph you would feel different
Hanlon played his heart out that year, they beat the Isles back-to-back in the beginning of that year going 8-1-1, while the Isles went 4-4-1. I have all of the articles from that year, every single one from both teams.
What killed the Rangers that year was what happened to Beck. No one ever saw that coming, Flatley was a 19 year old kid with 2 months of NHL hockey under his belt and he nearly officially ended the mans career.
still despite 25 years later that still gives me goosebumps. wow!!!!! and to all the islander haters.......stop with the weak opponent crap. we did it against the teams that beat all the so called powerhouses. remmeber....w ealso swept gretzky and his oiler pricks
You have no idea what you are talking about. Overrated........go watch the 1983 Stanley Cup finals moron and then tell me if he is overrated. He is the best money goaltender and playoff goaltender that ever lived.
@mrceebees14 -yeah, ok dickhead. Didn't he slash Gretzky's knees out in the finals? Only way he could stop him. Like I said, I would love 5 minutes alone in a room with him-that fuckin Irish slob. Real tough man. When he did get in a fight, he always lost. The better team(Edmonton) dethroned them the next year and became a better dynasty. You're a loser. so are the islanders now.
Definition of a Dynasty as depicted by the NHL (you can look this up.
Dynasty "A team who wins 3 or more in succession."
3 or more......hmmmmmm, did the Oilers ever win more then 3 in a row? Wait, did the Oilers ever even win 3 in a row? So how are they a dynasty? I guess they could be a "broken" Dynasty? Or maybe a welfare Dynasty? But surely not a "TRUE" Dynasty like those Islanders were.
"Wait, did the Oilers ever even win 3 in a row? So how are they a dynasty? I guess they could be a "broken" Dynasty? Or maybe a welfare Dynasty? But surely not a "TRUE" Dynasty like those Islanders were."
You are an absolute moron if you don't consider the 80's Oilers a dynasty. I dont give a flying f.uck what your definition of dynasty is, they were a DYNASTY and 1 fluke year where Calgary won in between doesnt change that fact. Oh wait, youre a fisherman fan, nevermind. Moron.
@mrceebees14 doesn't work now. That may have been true then. The only games the islanders seem to win against the Rangers is in OT. In regulation, they were 0-8 against the Rangers in "79 and '94. Do the math, dickhead. Nobody in the NHL knows the Islanders exist. Duh, where is Uniondale? Oh, that's niggerville.
So you are making excuses for the Rangers choking in OT?
In 1979 there was no OT play after regulation, that was strictly playoffs. In 1994 the Isles won the season series hands down 5 games to 1 and they didn't need OT for a majority of them to win. So my question is, what are you talking about?
No one knows hockey exists in this country.
The last part is just your ignorance shining through.
@mrceebees14 5 games to 1??? who the fuck cares? They lost to the Rangers in the playoffs-that supercedes regular season. Just like now-islanders still give the rangers problems-but they're just pests. they aren't going anywhere. They've also beaten the Devils and Red Wings really bad this year at their piece of shit place(mausoleum for the dead)-does this mean they're better than them? fuck no!
Not true, the Isles have won in regulation against the Rangers plenty of times, more times at MSG in fact. So I don't know where you got that from.
Nice comment at the end, you are the same pathetic Ranger fan that tells me to go back to "Jew Island" when I get off of the LIRR to see the Isles play the Rangers at MSG. Like the Rangers don't have black or Jewish fans? But you wouldn't say it to their face, because you would get your assed kicked you coward.
Maybe an asshole, but if you win 4 cups you're not overrated. Granted he had a great team in front of him. You could make the same useless argument about Fuhr being overrated.
@MrStones64 billy smith even at this age would beat your pussy ass. overrated?? lmao 4 cups A vezina a connsmythe a jennigs trophy and allstar game mvp. yeah he was overrated. stop wasting space with dumb comments
The Islander pricks in here stink. They stink worse than the Islanders did in their beating of weaklings in the early 80s. Hey I met Bobby Nystrom once and hes probably a hell of lot nicer than any of you pricks.
19 straight playoff series wins lol. yeah and against who? teams including the 81 Maple Laughs, 81 Oilers (at the time they sucked, only an idiot will disagree, just because they beat the Canadiens in round 1 doesnt matter, you arent a strong team if you dont have a strong reputation), 81 Rangers, 81 North Stats, 82 Penguins, 82 Rangers, 82 Nordiques and 82 Canucks. Not a single one of those teams was great, not one! And 19 straight series lol. Big joke. Big American joke. Its an old joke too.
You are a complete asshole. You fail to even understand what Im saying. The middle years of the Islanders dynasty were the lucky years, the years which allowed the Islanders to extended their dynasty instead of having it ruined by the Canadiens or Oilers, of course they never met them did they. Im not talking about 1980 or 1983, the middle years ASSHOLE.
I just told you stupid, the Oilers had less competition. And here's the proof. Add up the point totals for the Oilers opponents in the 4 Gretzky Cup playoff years (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988).
Then add up the point totals of the Islander playoff opponents in their 4 Cup years (1980-1983).
You'll see the Oilers opponent points were actually LESS in their 4 cup years. What an idiot!
I'm a Rangers fan and I am in total agreement. That was the greatest OT period I've ever seen bar none. It hurt to lose but there was no shame in it for us.
Now that's hockey. Kids that, that's how it was played when the sport mattered, not the crap you have to watch these days. Back then, THE REFS LET EM PLAYED!!!
What's with you trashing Tonelli? Not clutch? Are you friggin' kidding me? He may not of score a ton of goals like Anderson, but he scored many clutch goals. And why are you comparing the '76-'79 Canadiens to the Islanders '80'-83. Apples & Oranges. It took your Rags 68 years to win 4 Cups. The Isles won 4 in a row in half that time. Just another typical Ranger fan response.
Whats with this love for John Tonelli? Ok, he was a good player. But not terrific. Not a clutch player like my Glenn Anderson of the Oilers. Obviously youre an Islanders fan. Hey I wonder, were the 1980-83 NY Islanders better than the 1976-79 Montreal Canadiens? Seriously man, they werent. Canadiens-46 regular season losses and 10 playoff losses in total. Islanders? LOL. Try 88 regular season losses and 18 playoff losses. Basically double. Yeah and your Islanders are special? LOL Nope.
Tonelli and Anderson were of the same cloth whether you like it or not. Anderson scored more ... but Tonelli was paired with Bossy and Trots for only a few seasons and scored huge goal after huge goal. Game 5 vs. Pens 1982 biggest one of them all.
He was a better cornerman that Glenn & a tireless worker, He was not the sniper Glenn was but if there's ever a player that deserves to get in the HOF in spite of offensive stats that are just Ok, it's JT. The 76-79 Habs were better than the 80-83 Isles but the Islanders were special. They won 19 consecutive series from 80-84. The Habs didn't because there was a first-round bye for each division winner during the 70's. It would''ve made no difference. They would've won 4 in a row anyway.
You won't find a better game than this, such drama. I was to young to really feel the true pain of this loss being a Ranger fan. My Uncle who got me into hockey & has been a die hard fan since the 60's was devestated by this, he always thought this was the one chance they had to beat those Islander teams.
Yep. Meanwhile, anytime you watch any of these games on the NHL Network, the fucking score is 5-3, 6-2, 4-3, etc. Yeah, Bettman, the obstruction had a lot to do with the scoring issues, sure.
I remember this game like it was yesterday...Bobby Bourne had wheels...Doesnt get better than Hockey Night In Canada at playoff time...although I fear that the new breed are a bit lame...no more Gallivans,Hewitts,Kellys and Coles...
Yes the Rangers can thank the oilers but they were already veterans vs a young Canucks team. The only thing Isles fans can chant is 1994. Rangers fans can chant 1983. If Rangers or Isles beat Devils in the playoffs it will only matter if they win the Stanley Cup.
Oh, Geez. I'm still not over this game. I was watching and I think I cried when Morrow scored. Hanlon. Boy did he suck. They never should have traded Eddie Mio.
haha, at 8:42 that guy congratulating billy smith in the hallway cursing up a storm on live tv. what a great overtime period...one of the best ever...period.
Yup, the Rags had their year in 94. Still doesn't even come close to the fact that the Isles beat them in the playoffs 4 years in a row, with the Isles DESTROYING them on their way to Cup after Cup.
What about 1979 dumbass?? Thats 1 cup the Rangers took away from your team. 1990 we beat you guys and 1994 as well (total destruction). Islanders havent beaten the Rangers in years and were lucky to win this game in 1984.
I would hardly calling '79 "Taking the cup away". The Rags lost to the 4 time cup winning Canadiens, which could have very easily been the Isles fate. We may have won the President's Trophy that year, but it was still the Habs running the show. Even as an Islanders fan I will admit that. Rags beat us that year, we come back and win 4 straight series against them. Yes, they had their parade in '94 (only one in almost 70 years), but really that is all you have. One parade in 70 years. Pathetic.
And whom did Kovalev take that perfect pass from to score a key goal that eventually led to the Rangers beating the Devils in game 6 of the 1994 playoffs? M-a-r-k M-e-s-s-i-e-r.
Without Messier the Rangers don't get past the Devils in game 6 and you are still hearing 1940 ringing in your Ears.
Stop living in denial, it's going to drive you mad, the Rangers benefited from the Oilers and the economy that was the NHL back then. That is the main, main reason the Rangers won that cup.
This ending matches the great Capitals-Flyers Game 7 OT game in 1988 for intense, end-to-end action in the OT period. Of course, these great endings declined in number after the divisions were re-aligned.
oGreat game Never happen today Rangers goal with 30 seconds or so to go in regulation would have been disallowed by replay Don Maloneys tying goal was stick way above shoulder Smitty went nuts but got last laugh
That was the oiler hawks and it was no revenge. Typical. Know nothing about the game but loves his men if they're in rangers tights. Era to era the Isles own the rangers all time series and playoffs. By the time Buttman turned the league into the NBA the oiler hawks were the first of the checkbook championships. Simple as that. The Islanders team that lynched you in 81, 82, 83, 84 etc were long gone to the Hall of fame when the oiler hawks were awarded the NBA title in 1994. Dream on.
Compare all you want- Isles were better. Period. The rangers haven't won the cup since before the US entered WW II. That purchased cup awarded in`94 went to the oiler hawks. Everyone knows it. And after all that money, collusion and luck, the oiler hawks needed 7 games and the game was in doubt to the very last second...swell huh. Devils own the bragging rights for the last 15 years anyway. Isles are sunk, rangers always trying to run before they can walk. Islands and the apple take notice.
That is a really disgraceful vid you have on your channel there President Obama.
The Islanders in 1994 basically got beaten by the core group of Oilers they lost to in 1983. I don't know how you can revel in the fact that your favorite team once again had to import talent from other teams in order to win one cup. This when other franchises were already on cup number two with mostly homegrown talent.
But 54 years is a ridiculous amount of time, so the pain must've been very deep.
Brian Leetch was a Rangers draft pick, and Zubov, and Richter, and Nemchinov and Karpotsev. The Rangers addition of players that were available cause the Oilers could no longer afford them or were available was something the Rangers HAD to do. When you have not won in 54 years there's no tomorrow. And plenty of other teams wanted those guys too so don't blame the Rangers for buying good players. And yes you're right. The Isles from 80-83 were BETTER than the Rangers.
Amazing you mentioned Sergei Zubov before Mike Richter in home grown talent that helped to win the cup way back in 1994.
Nemchinov was decent, but far from the reason the Rangers won in 1994. Alexander Karpotsev?? That is a reach because he sucked, Potsey was lucky to be on that team. That is like me bragging about Jason Weimer being on my team.
Kovalev had that one good year, Keenan wanted badly to trade him because Alex couldn't stop handling the puck for 5 hours instead of passing it. Kovalev was put on Messier's line for a reason, because Kovalev couldn't produce anywhere else. The Rangers owe atleast half of that cup to the Oilers, 7 members played an intriquite part in 1994.
"to you New York, New York, if you can't make it here, you won't make it anywhere." etc. They were mocked the famous Sinatra song and changed some of the words to "it's all your fault, New York, New York." As everyone who has been to the Coliseum knows, if the fans want to make that place loud with those low ceilings, they can and it was loud that night in there.
1994 might've been great for Ranger fans, but any Ranger fan back then would have to agree those early 80's Isles were better.
You older New York hockey fans might remember this, but to those who don't I will bring up a true story that happened at the Coliseum during the Isles cup years.
I don't remember if it was a regular season game or playoff game, but what the Isles fans did to the Rangers had to humiliate the Blueshirts and their fans.
It was during an intermission break when the entire Coliseum literally stood up and started to sing "New York, New York" pointing at the Rangers bench and screaming "its up
1994 the Isles were only above .500 once that entire year, they needed that last game of the season to qualify for the playoffs and it only happened when Florida lost.
It was one of the worst Isles teams to ever go into the playoffs, not like the Ranger teams of the early 80's who always made the playoffs and always put a competitive team on the ice. Any why not? They had to keep up with the Isles who were winning the cup every year......that HAD to be embarrasing for the Smurfs.
1981 the Isles swept the Rangers in the conf finals by a final tally of 28-8. Not as bad as 22-3, but then again, the Rangers were one of the top teams in the league that year next to the Isles, Flyer and Bruins. So you could say this was one of the Rangers better teams that went into the playoffs back then and the Isles wiped the floor with them 4 straight. The Isles went on to win their second straight cup and it would be the first or 4 straight years the Isles persoanlly ended the Rangers
Actually was at this game sitting in the nosebleeds with my dad as an 11 year old diehard Isles fan. Don't know how I didn't have a heart attack that night. Was the goal somewhat of a fluke? Sure. But you tell me what team was working harder in the corners. Tonelli, Bourne, Sutter ... that's why so many non-superstar players scored OT goals with the Isles. You rarely saw Trots or Bossy score the big ones, because EVERYBODY wanted to be the hero.
The goal wasn't a fluke, Flatley never got the credit he deserved. Flats set up a PEFECT screen on Hanlon which if you watch closely, Hanlon reaches out to move Flatley and Greschner out of the way so he can see the shot. If anything, Greschner didn't cover his man correctly, he didn't keep him out of Hanlon's line of sight, he gets big blame for this loss.
Felt bad for the Ranger fans, they just could never beat the Isles when it counted.
Go Rangers 1994 Stanley Cup Champs. Isles 4 cups in a row? They don't compare to the 1994 Stanley Cup. So big deal it took Rangers over 50 years but it was a special win for the Rangers during 1994.

GO TO THE GAMES!!
stormcrow7878 1 year ago
I feel the same way you do, and I'm a Rangers' fan. I DON'T want to see the Islanders move. It would be a dark day for hockey and deprive us of our greatest rivalry. The Rangers vs. Islanders playoff series were pure hockey gold.

@dzanier There is talk about them moving to Queens or even Brooklyn.

Forget the Battle of Alberta, the Battle of Ontario. Forget Leafs/Habs and the force-fed Caps/Pens. Rangers/Islanders if the best rivalry in hockey.
This a great call btw. Who did this game?

ssfool-fine, but the islanders are certainly far removed from any glory and I don't see that changing.
MrStones64 1 year ago
This gives me chills even more so than Nystrom at 7:11 in 1980. These are two teams who threw absolutely everything that they had at the other, with two of the most legendary coaches to ever stand behind the bench. An epic battle. And a great screen by Flats, even while being tripped up, to stay in front.
Now, of course, our two teams can't even make the fucking playoffs, and the prospects don't look good for either of us in the near future. My, how we have fallen.

@goisles @goisles i dunno if the rangers have really fallen, they were a flawed but good team in the early 80s that could never get past the islanders after '79 because they were just too good....not much has changed in the last 20+ years (except they don't lose to the islanders in the playoffs every year)
amazingly every team that beat the rangers in the playoffs from 79-87 either won the cup or went to the finals
jreiter9 1 year ago
Classic! helluva OT by both teams--end to end all the way--Bobby Bourne starts hustling at the Ranger blue line into his own end, ends up near Billy Smith and skates all the way to the Ranger net and gets a shot on net!! Maloney stopped at point blank and Morrow scoring. A classic! I was wondering why Morrow did not shake hands with Herb at the end--unless I missed something. maybe there was a falling out after the Olympics? Herb was the man. A great guy!
mendopato 1 year ago
@mendopato did I say the rangers are as successful as the yankees? However their history, they'll exist long after the islanders move out of that shithole of theirs and finally cease to exist. Based on attendance figures, they don't sell out a playoff game(unless they were hosting the Rangers-who always help the attendance at the shithole in the uniondale nigger ghetto.

Islanders never recovered from that total decimation the Rangers layed upon them, and their pathetic fans.
bbasher79 2 years ago
The Rangers are nobody's in a town of somebody's.
The only claim to fame is where they play, that is it. The fact the Islanders and Devils have more winning then the losers at MSG in the last 25 years shows that.
Time for you to wake up, the Rangers are and always have been losers.
There is no hope when you are a Rangers fan.......none.
mrceebees14 2 years ago
You don't remember the 1984 and 1994 season then.
Food for thought.
mrceebees14 2 years ago
@mrceebees14 The Rangers did win the presidents trophy in '94, not almost.
MrStones64 2 years ago
Islanders are historically losers. 4 cups don't make up for a sad franchise. Their fans don't show up except when the rangers are in to beat their brains in. Gretzky didn't fake shit. Billy the douchebag fakes being a human being. He certainly isn't a hockey player. He should try the middle of the ice. I would have loved him trying shit on a real irishman, terry taz oreilly..
MrStones64 2 years ago
How many teams would kill for just 1 cup? Let alone doing it 4 straight times.
Who will ever beat 19 straight playoff series wins in any sport? The rule is, "records are meant to be broken," that one will never be........that says a ton.
Billy got the job done, and any other fan on another team would have loved to have him and if they don't they are just plain stupid. Winning is winning, you don't like it? Blow me.
mrceebees14 2 years ago
Historical losers are the Rangers who own nearly every category of the word from worst lopsided loss RedWings 15 Rangers 5 1955 to most first round exits in the playoffs. The Rangers are the post child for losing.
mrceebees14 2 years ago
@mrceebees14 not in more recent years. Let's stick with something other than the stone age. The islanders successes will never be again. The organization sucks. I'd rather at least have the opportunity of the postseason, which the icelanders don't have.

@mrceebees14 real intelligent, douchebag. Unfortunately for you, it's the truth. No one could ever deny 4 cups, but the organization has been a disaster since. MrStones64 2 years ago

mrceebees14 2 years ago
@mrceebees14 douchebag: It does matter-it means the islanders don't exist as a team, nobody cares, they have no fan base. They're a scumbag team. Get a real home town..hockey fans for the most part aren't too intelligent when they root for the islanders. And by the way, mr. douchebag, '79 and '94 were playoffs when the islanders couldn't beat the rangers in regulation.. I've been watching hockey since before the iceholes were even a team, so I know more about hockey than you. Isles suck

MrStones64 2 years ago
You mean the one that Gretzky faked? Yes, and Wayne was paid back for that bs in game 4 after the Isles swept the Oilers.
Irish slob? So you have a problems with the Irish now? I am sure Mark Messier wouldn't like that since his mother is full blooded Irish.
He was a real tough man, he was tough to get a puck past him in the playoffs.
He still played the rest of the game and nearly always won the game.

4 cups in 4 years= 100%...Islanders
5 cups in 7 years=71%.....Oilers
Definition of a Dynasty as depicted by the NHL (you can look this up.
Dynasty "A team who wins 3 or more in succession."
3 or more......hmmmmmm, did the Oilers ever win more then 3 in a row? Wait, did the Oilers ever even win 3 in a row? So how are they a dynasty? I guess they could be a "broken" Dynasty? Or maybe a welfare Dynasty? But surely not a "TRUE" Dynasty like those Islanders were.
Too bad, you suck.
mrceebees14 2 years ago

Losers..........
mrceebees14 2 years ago
@mrceebees14 doesn't work now. That may have been true then. The only games the islanders seem to win against the Rangers is in OT. In regulation, they were 0-8 against the Rangers in "79 and '94. Do the math, dickhead. Nobody in the NHL knows the Islanders exist. Duh, where is Uniondale? Oh, that's niggerville.
MrStones64 2 years ago
So you are making excuses for the Rangers choking in OT?
In 1979 there was no OT play after regulation, that was strictly playoffs. In 1994 the Isles won the season series hands down 5 games to 1 and they didn't need OT for a majority of them to win. So my question is, what are you talking about?
No one knows hockey exists in this country.
The last part is just your ignorance shining through.
mrceebees14 2 years ago
@mrceebees14 5 games to 1??? who the fuck cares? They lost to the Rangers in the playoffs-that supercedes regular season. Just like now-islanders still give the rangers problems-but they're just pests. they aren't going anywhere. They've also beaten the Devils and Red Wings really bad this year at their piece of shit place(mausoleum for the dead)-does this mean they're better than them? fuck no!
MrStones64 2 years ago
It was 5 games to 1 that season, you said they never beat them in regulation, so you were wrong.
Devils are so bad, that is why they could win the cup this year?
I would rather play at the Coliseum, then with corporate suits still asking me when Gretzky is playing.
mrceebees14 2 years ago
Not true, the Isles have won in regulation against the Rangers plenty of times, more times at MSG in fact. So I don't know where you got that from.
Nice comment at the end, you are the same pathetic Ranger fan that tells me to go back to "Jew Island" when I get off of the LIRR to see the Isles play the Rangers at MSG. Like the Rangers don't have black or Jewish fans? But you wouldn't say it to their face, because you would get your assed kicked you coward.
mrceebees14 2 years ago
4 games to 1 this season against the Rangers.
You have no offense, your defense is pathetic and Gaborik got railroaded the other night and every Ranger fan nearly shit his pants as a result.

ULTRAPOWER1977Habs 2 years ago
Ultrapower1977, you're greatly exaggerating.
Are you aware that the Isles in 1980 knocked off Boston, Buffalo and Philly, all 100+ point teams?
(The Flyers that year still the the NHL record of 35 games without a loss)
Are you aware that in 1983, the Isles knocked off the presidents trophy winner Boston in the Semis, and the 2nd overall Oilers in the Finals?
In fact, the competition the Isles faced as probably stiffer than that of Edmonton in the mid 1980s.
leafyutube 2 years ago
You are a complete asshole. You fail to even understand what Im saying. The middle years of the Islanders dynasty were the lucky years, the years which allowed the Islanders to extended their dynasty instead of having it ruined by the Canadiens or Oilers, of course they never met them did they. Im not talking about 1980 or 1983, the middle years ASSHOLE.
ULTRAPOWER1977Habs 2 years ago
No YOU'RE the asshole! AND an idiot!!!

Just another typical Ranger fan response.
elevation67 2 years ago
Whats with this love for John Tonelli? Ok, he was a good player. But not terrific. Not a clutch player like my Glenn Anderson of the Oilers. Obviously youre an Islanders fan. Hey I wonder, were the 1980-83 NY Islanders better than the 1976-79 Montreal Canadiens? Seriously man, they werent. Canadiens-46 regular season losses and 10 playoff losses in total. Islanders? LOL. Try 88 regular season losses and 18 playoff losses. Basically double. Yeah and your Islanders are special? LOL Nope.
FuckYouNYIslanders 2 years ago

They would've won 4 in a row anyway.

goisles 3 years ago
What about 1979 dumbass?? Thats 1 cup the Rangers took away from your team. 1990 we beat you guys and 1994 as well (total destruction). Islanders havent beaten the Rangers in years and were lucky to win this game in 1984.
NyRangersMessier11 3 years ago
I would hardly calling '79 "Taking the cup away". The Rags lost to the 4 time cup winning Canadiens, which could have very easily been the Isles fate. We may have won the President's Trophy that year, but it was still the Habs running the show. Even as an Islanders fan I will admit that. Rags beat us that year, we come back and win 4 straight series against them. Yes, they had their parade in '94 (only one in almost 70 years), but really that is all you have. One parade in 70 years. Pathetic.
goisles 3 years ago
And whom did Kovalev take that perfect pass from to score a key goal that eventually led to the Rangers beating the Devils in game 6 of the 1994 playoffs? M-a-r-k M-e-s-s-i-e-r.
Without Messier the Rangers don't get past the Devils in game 6 and you are still hearing 1940 ringing in your Ears.
Stop living in denial, it's going to drive you mad, the Rangers benefited from the Oilers and the economy that was the NHL back then. That is the main, main reason the Rangers won that cup.

Dream on.
CoffeyWhore 3 years ago
Compare all you want- Isles were better. Period. The rangers haven't won the cup since before the US entered WW II. That purchased cup awarded in`94 went to the oiler hawks. Everyone knows it. And after all that money, collusion and luck, the oiler hawks needed 7 games and the game was in doubt to the very last second...swell huh. Devils own the bragging rights for the last 15 years anyway. Isles are sunk, rangers always trying to run before they can walk. Islands and the apple take notice.

How about Kovalev? Do Rangers win in 1994 without him? Homegrown.
NyRangersMessier11 3 years ago

Season.

April 10th, 1984, will never forget this game.
Had just turned 12 years old and was listening to it on the radio.

Wait, one cup in 1994 is nothing like 4 cups in a row. Dude, wtf is wrong with you.
