  • I wonder how much of this bass line Chuck Rainey came up with and how much Becker/Fagen came up with.

  • Not exactly, but kudos to you for attempting what is probably the most difficult bass part of all time...

  • Tough stuff. I been at it for a while on this one. I think you are getting close. Slap rhythm on recording is bouncier on the chorus and riff at the end of verses needs a double stop & a bit of cleaning up. Excellent touch & sound!

  • Dig your style 100% man , your a cool dude , respect!

  • is that a btb 575 ?

    rokkitt from TB

  • that slappin is hard eh? :) god playin, but im sorry, this isnt tight. but who can play like chuck rainey?

from a bassist to another: Keep up the good work!

  • excellent!

  • A really enjoyable video thanks.

  • Chcuk's got groove.

  • nice sound man. 5/5

  • nice one dude!

  • dude that is an awsome amp, how many watts is it? i'm on the market for a new one, i have a crapy aria at the moment.

  • good job!

  • Slap Bass! Great man! i'am a big fan from steely dan so!

    Kinds Regards From matthijs!

  • your hot!

  • SOLID...........................

  • great job, love that some

  • Do the damn thang awesome

  • Solid grooving, keep it up!

  • superb! The bass on most steely dan stuff is fab and underrated.

  • Thanks alot

  • Excellent bass work. loved the sound on that guitar. keep it up dude.

  • Thank you. I love the modulus tone to.

  • Enjoyed every note.

  • Great chops there my friend.....Can you tell me what bass your using?.....Looks like an Aria.

  • It's a Modulus Quantum 5.

  • Dave man Ive read alot of your talkbass post.

I was like where do I know that name from. Small internet afterall. I have answered that I love my Quantum 5 by Modulus Guitars ,but it didnt seem to appear. Thanks for another acurate post.

  • 'aight good one :)keep on grooving

  • Dude F these guys that are dissing your slap. That is sick. I thought the other parts were a little slow compared to what was happening in the song but the slap was really good.

  • Chuck Rainey was a genius

  • You are right dude, the slap is overdone and not subtle enough, but the rest is of almost radchris standard. Very nice.

  • Baker, as long as you're learning, grooving and (most importantly) having fun ... it's all good in my books! :)

And btw .. I am digging your original material! Great work!

  • Play on my friend, play on!

  • bakeronbass- you at the place !

I'll have to check out some of your orig. stuff you mentioned.

I can SEE you CLEARLY play to reach that 'place'.

I don't see anything 'showy' as Bix posted.

  • Thanks Alot for your kind comments!

Its getting better all the time.

    Cheers

  • oh yeah Bix, also, I find the fact that this guy actually played it out after the fade out from the recording, and brought cadence from with that perfect 4th to the tonic - ya know ? I think I prefer that. Sign of someone who understands the music, not the tabs etc... or trying to mimick.

  • You missed my point. It's an exercise that all musicians do. Well or not, it's not something you should post. This is simply Karaoke Why not post your self playing scales? Worse, he is hot-dogging and missing half of what Mr. Rainey was doing. See the video "The Making of Peg" and perhaps you'll understand. Showing off is what this fellow is doing and he simply lacks the goods to pull off such technical wizardry.

  • did it ever occur to you, mr. perfect bass player, that this is probably a guy w/ a day job who just posted because he loves to play? it's amazing how many critics there are on youtube! if you're so great, why don't you just post a video response of you playing the studio recording bassline note for note? fucking armchair quarterbacks who post these comments need to gain some perspective that's a little more realistic or shut the fuck up.

  • That's every bassplayer that has posted videos of their own playing.......all blue collar guys simply seeking recognition and an audience that has a right to comment if they are good or need work. Plus they can be inspired by other bassplayers that are more experienced players and they can learn some things by watching, say if they play a song...someone else may play that same song a little better.

  • btw Bix

I really LIKE the changes here...

I dont' play bass, but that whole slapping, getting things just right on the offbeat - makes me feel GREAT, maybe a few milliseconds on technique here - frame 2:34 or so, last time I saw a head spin with gratification like that was the slide guitarist on Beefhearts' Ice Cream for Crow piece. If you've seen it, you 'get' that it's a reflection the musician is having a freakin' BLAST and connecting if you ask me.

  • What can I say? We have different standards. he is missing a lot more notes and beats than your think. Never mind the appalling technique. He simply does not know where the pocket is even when Chuck Rainy is showing him where the pocket is! If you are impressed you have a long way to go. Use your ears first and your hands last.

  • Perhaps you are a musician because you sure as hell can't write English. I gather you are displeased with my comment, but I am not entirely sure. Please take your comment to your E-comp 101 teacher for translation. -thanks.

PS: I simply think it is stupid to post yourself playing to a record. It's like posting yourself playing scale exercises. Why not post your OWN rendition of a song? Be original.

  • btw- I like that you keep it alive even after the piece fades out, CLEARLY it's alive in your head - and that's all that matters

    Thanks for the share bakeronBass-

I think I read people without too much error, you look like someone that disappears into the music, hats off, same here.

heh, I'm down to 1 string this last 6 month run here.

I tell ya, amazing the relationship of the harmonic series to the diatonic scale when you have ONE string to express it all.

I do more with Bach though

  • Fk um mr bakeronbass, posting your self is brave it swings ok man, non offensive, fun aswell and encouraging to young muciscians. bix the bitter critic, wen we critizise people you criticize yourself. keep playin and havin fun.peace baker dude from london.

  • Peace

  • You can play a little bass. You cannot play like Chuck Rainy. -Not even close. Keep your excercises to yourself -why embarrass yourself? Next time post something ORIGINAL. Find the your own voice and make sure it's in the pocket. PS: Lots of non pros will think that's great playing, but...

  • Whatever

I'am not Chuck Rainey. Duh. Yeah Mr Rainey is one of the greatest. Some of my in the pocket origionals are posted at Myspace/bakeronbass. It may not be Pro enough for you BixLives32.

  • I play to records as well. All musicians do this, but we DON'T usually post them on Utube! You were simply showing off. A few idiots might be impressed, but a serious player knows that it is just an excercise; -and one in which you did not do well. At least it was not as bad as a drummer's playing to "Peg" . This guy completely missed Rick Marotta's feet, added dopey fills and a show-off Buddy Rich solo! Why do so many guys post videos of themselves playing to records?

  • Well I think the verse is OK ,but admittedly the chorus slap line does suck. But you know I spent a couple weeks learning this tune and I thought what the hell. I'll never find a band or drummer that can play the syncopated chorus so I made a video with my camera. It has been FUN for me and a couple others and thats all that matters. Posting negetively about someones video is pointless. Any dork with a laptop and a camera can do it. Lighten up

  • I thought you were a serious musician. My mistake. Have fun.

  • Well Bix where can I find your music?

  • Annonomously, damnit.

Look, you're probably a good kid. Get a band, write some songs, tighten them up and THEN post them. You don't need to copy a record. Seele Dan are great, but so are Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding (no less great). there are a lot of great records out there and more waiting to be made -why not make one? How much time do you think you have?

  • Sorry Bix

I like this... I was into checking out what people are doing with Peg.

Who made you god Bix ?

I'm usually PRETTY darn critical of showoffs on youtube, I find this a genuine offering.

Most of all ? I bet this char - bakeronBass was living 'in' the music - I think it was a terrific share.

Bix, music isn't about precision, mimickry, it's about transforming your experience of this world to something more than you ever thought it could be.

I think BakerOnBass reaches the place here

  • no, the slap line doesn't suck bakeronbass.

I know this piece - well - TOO damn well - and I like what you were after, don't drop innovation from your pallete ! play on !

GRANTED, there is a simplicity even in the guitar solo that is to be sought - but hey, thanks for sharing the fun man.

  • Bix

    come on, SERIOUS ?

What's that ? when you can smoke someone ? impress them ?

I'd say SERIOUS is someone who - based on the facial and bodily expressions of THIS character bakeronbass ? is FULLY alive and well - (a new Johnny Winter song never to be released ? ).

Come on, WE're not cakes with icing.

We're the damn bread machine man !

It's about the process, not the end result.

    TRUST ME ! Why ? I can even smoke MYSELF ! ? ? ? hmm.

  • I think this guy was playing WITH, not TO.

Soon, someone will post Cage's silence piece playing with on youtube - and just then maybe...

  • Hard song and you did a great job.Cool 5 string

  • Ross, I agree. This is the most difficult bass part I've ever heard. It's a credit to these young guys who pay homage to Chuck Rainey. But they still need to know that it's more about time and 'pocket' than geting somebody else's part perfect. Keep up the good work, Baker...

  • Good attempt on a hard song to play! Listen more critically to the ghost notes on the verse which give the bass line it's groove. Re-visit the slapping chorus and re-work your slapping lines. Adhbass posting on you tube playing peg is the best I've seen. his verses are really good, slapping chorus is a nice interpretation of the orignal, love his use of triplet sixteenths. keep practicing, you will get it!

  • very well put ross! try not to rush the slap part... the ghost notes in the finger style will give it that percussive funkyness. love the modulus tone (looks like one to me). well done.

  • i love that groove you feel coming into the first verse.........

  • There are actually a lot of ghost notes during that chorus that you're missing out on. To hear them just turn it up on the recording w/ headphones. You might also see some of them on the classic album dvd of aja.

    Anyways, good work though!!

  • dang. how long did it take you to have it on lock?

  • Well the verse and the turn around came to me right away ,but I spent a couple weeks on the chorus. I've got it alot smoother now then when I posted this. I'am planning on doing more videos mabye I'll do this one again?

    Thanks for the comment.

  • MANDOU MUITO BEM,TU TOK PRA CARALHO!

  • Thank You!

  • Oh and straight off -- do NOT sell the gear -- Shit u got talent so USE it -- all u good guys got all the doubt and the crap ones are cocky -- that's how u know lol -- good luck!

  • Thank you for your kind comments.

  • Not many players see the raw sex of this bassline -- you get it! Flirtin with the sax and rhodes -- just need to tighten that rhythm a notch and u got it -- especially that sweet slap chorus -- rock on bro!

  • Cool mullet!!!

  • hehe dont sell ur gear man ,music is worth it , i liked the bassplaying u displayed here , my only critism is that it can be even more fluent and that is practice rythems , play djembe or whatever get that flow on ! but dont get me wrong ur good !

  • Thanks Man!

  • Well done mate bloody great performance better than my post youve got a better ear than me. If I aint got it down in half an hour thats the version I post lol no patience me pmsl.well done

  • I really appreciate your comment. Means alot coming from such a Solid player. Your slap technique is way better than mine.

  • Thanks!

  • Thats fucking superb, and you look so comfortable playing it. Great stuff!

  • Bice playing! A little cheat on the turn-around at the end of the verse, that part is the toughest part of the song to get right.

  • yea i agree with pokemonyellow, when you slap it should be all in your rist not in your thumb. you will get alot more thump with that as well.

  • Thanks pokemonyellow for rating me and everything.

You're not just seeing things I'am just like flicking with the thumb, because it seems to me like the lighter and cleaner I can get it the better it sounds.

Its a fun song to play. Chuck Rainey is an excellent player.

    Thanks again Peace Chuck

  • nice playing dude

when your slapping during the chorus, it looks like your moving your thumb a lot instead of your wrist, is that true, or am I just seeing things? lol

  • Should I just sell my gear or what?

I've been trying to get my act together to either take Berkeley's on line bass course or go down to BIT(Musicians Institute) and they both require you to make videos of your self so this is my first one.

I'd appreciate all comments and criticism.

    Thanks
