someone made a comment about the opening sounding like starfox...so true Im talking the snes version and I can still hear that frog pilot nagging me...awesome song and album.
@PFCbouchard2251 Because back in these days, Genesis wasn't exactly popular with the top 40 radio crowd.
To be honest, their first hit was "Follow You, Follow Me" - "(I Know What I Like) In Your Wardrobe" and "The Carpet Crawlers" were simply most-requested on the then-fledgling FM radio format.
@JohnFordDanceTroupe i know that radio has it's way of leaving out the really good music but for the greatest hits cds i think it should mean greatest hits with the FANS. i wasnt even born so i dunno what Genesis songs were popular back then but i know which songs are still good and original sounding today and those should be the ones under the label "Greatest". just my opinion...
ah memories. That intro is great, it must have been at the Philips Halle in Essen in 1974 or 75 I think, can anyone correct that? It was the first time I saw Genesis. PG was prancing around on stage in his oversized black plastic winged creation.
"Foxtrot" by far is in my top 10 favorite albums. The musicianship, the constant usage of hooks, and the subtle dark humor in a few songs (most notably the over-the-top "Get 'em Out by Friday") makes it a personal favorite - and this song proves it.
Probably the best recording they ever made as a band with Peter Gabriel... the dynamic and the sincerity, leaves you speechless if you hear it on decent headphones...
It's impressive how videogames music in the first half of the 90s (up to '96-'97) was inspired by 70s prog, exspecially genesis. For instance, the intro - wonderful - reminds me of Starfox 64...
@LucianBelmau yeah, but if we take the glasses we will figure out that the cheap allaround keaboard chip that the n64 had, was a pile of shit compaired to the great synth sounds that the supernintendo had ,its just like the prog discussion about its eras, let me say the supern sound chip is the postmodern melotron, the n64 is the 80ties.nes and c64 is the organ.same comes up to the compositions, from ca.85 to 94 prog was the main influence in roleplaying g.a adventure and action games!
@LucianBelmau thats because, of two things.making impressive sounds with just 4 tones at the same time, must lead into creativity.second the japanese people love progressive rock and metal ! third they love anything with the word fantasy inside of it ! adrian belew of the band called king crimson still was a big icon in japan decades after prog rock took place, same goes around with classic metal today..greetz
"Creatures shaped this planet's soil. Now their reign has come to end. . .For now the lizard has shed his tail. This is the end of man's long union with earth."
i heard a part of "supper's ready" off of foxtrot, and it sounded so original i was stunned. i also remember hearing one off their first album. have an opinion on their first?
floyd, it changes for me from time to time. but i think i am now settled on Selling England By The Pound as their best. Its the best one to get acclimated to their sound. I think gabriel and the band were both on the same page throughout that album.
@floyd4life73 Try "Selling England by the Pound", "A Trick of the Tail", "Foxtrot", and "Abacab". "Trespass" and the Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" are great, too.
Good album. I have every one of their albums on record. Ever since i was very young ( about 3-5) I have loved the unique sound of Genesis to my ears. I have some Lamb songs, so check those out.
i have listened to Selling England and Nursery Cryme a bunch. Lamb is the one Genesis album i have not heard much of except title track and Carpet Crawlers.
