I know possibly going regret saying this, but why do I keep wanting to hear his Chekov accent? Sometimes it sounds like he'll slip back into it, then he doesn't. Still love him though and we should start a petition to get him a star. Cause it's not right if everybody else got one. Starting to like Bester a lot.
@maryme4ever Mr. Walter "I-finally-get-my-star-on-the Walk-of-Fame" Koenig was in 12 episodes on B5: imdb.com/character/ch0012573/filmoseries#tt0105946 .
The best Bester line has never been on Youtube. The scene where he's saying goodbye to his love in stasis. He's standing there acting to a wall and says "They think they've won this one...and that's okay, that's really alright...because I've got something that will hurt them more than they've EVER hurt me. I....miss...you."
@sunnchilde Sheridan and the others, their probably laughing right now, well thats alright i still have an ace in the whole, and it will hurt them more then anything they've ever done to me. I miss you, theres no one at home for me to talk to. Goodnight, i'll see you soon. I promise."
@sunnchilde Season 4 episode 7 "I.. I tried, i tried, six men my best pilots. They weren't my orders i just passed them on, I took advantage of it, they trusted me. Never imagined what i was sending them into, I gave them the orders that ended their lifes. Its a hard thing to send people in to die when your the one pulling the trigger, but i'd do it again, black omega was my baby, my creation, and i'd gladly sacrifice the whole squadron to bring you back to me. But it was all for nothing.
@sunnchilde I think your definately right, since i got the show on my computer thought i'd put up the full and exact quote. It really does tell you everything about his character.
@GhostInTheShell29 Thanks. Babylon 5 wasn't science fiction. It was poetry. It was modern day Shakespeare. These scene where Lorien talks to Ivanova about Love. That scene was cinematic excellence. Or the moment of human frailty of when "Justin" says to Sheridan "But you DO what you're TOLD! And so will YOU!"
i also grew up with star trek and i really loved "chekov", the english and the german version. he was cute and funny :) but when w. koenig plays bester, you can really see that he is talented
what was the name of the episode where bester says " your enemy is my enemy" ?You know the one where his old girlfriend is used by the shadows. Thanks in advance.
@Soldierlozer What, just because he's stuck in a loveless marriage(that was chosen for him by the Corps so as to breed a super teep) and his girlfriend's still got shadow tech integrated into her?
I don't feel sorry for him. In fact, one of the great disappointments of the series is that we never get to see him get what's coming to him AND the Corps. I'd have paid money to have seen the Telepath War storyline live and uncut.
@ginsengaddict I think people will eventually forget he ever played Chekov(especially with the Abrams abomination probably spawning sequels), and remember him for his work as Bester, which is a good thing, IMO, as the Bester character was far more developed than Chekov's had been.
A nice guy(judging from a single con panel) and a hell of an actor. Just don't read anything he writes, he's as bad as Shatner.....
I always loathed Star Trek and unsurprisingly loathed the character of Chekhov, given the poor dialogue in that show etc. Straczynski apparently thought that Walter was capable of much better acting provided he was given great dialogue to work with, which turned out fine.
Bester was without a doubt the best character in Babylon 5. What I found amusing was that, despite him being portrayed as evil, he is proven right about the rogue telepaths and right as well in trying to prevent a telepath holocaust, even though that involves hurting Garibaldi.
@Loki0115 Maybe, but William Edgars was also right, when he said the Corps wanted to overthrow the existing system and replace it with a dictatorship where the teeps were on top, and the mundanes on the VERY bottom.
That has been Bester's goal as well, except he wants to be on top of the teep new order.
In the end, far from preventing the Telepath War, both men's actions set the stage for that war and the downfall of the Corps.
What made Bester such a good villian was his believing mind, body and soul he was right. However much you think of him as the bad guy, you cannot help respecting him.
It's scenes like this that make B5 so much better than most shows/films. To quote "nobody [there] is entirely what he seems.
We all know that Bester is the evil baddy, but the writing makes you occasionally forget that he was a baddy, and you often found yourself liking the S.O.B!
I've been a hardcore fan of Walter's for over 8 years now and I agree. XD
But DAMN why was season 5 the only season broadcasted here in the Netherlands? Babylon 5 just never made it... and Star Trek hasn't been broadcast for several years either. :( The Nobel Prize goes to whoever invented the proxy.
@LeBubblesSan That's his natural speaking voice. I much prefer it to the overly-Russian accented voice of Chekov's, the hilarious "nuclear wessels" line from Trek IV nonwithstanding.
@Progressive75 No, his best line would either be "Damn, people, I just saved your butts," from "Dust to Dust," or "I believe my usual accomodations in the brig are ready," from "Ship of Tears."

@sunnchilde Babylon 5 is the modern-day answer to Blake's 7 :) I think the character of Bester was modelled after Avon from B7.

Bester was such an ass on Babylon 5. I think I am the only who was glad he died the way he did. In a dark prison forgotten, and rotting of old age.

You can tell Walter enjoys playing Bester, and who the hell wouldn't? Amoral is just so much more fun then being good.

Love the Character, was pretty much the only reason i watched B5.
Plus, his actual back story is quite moving, especially his death.

It is really amazing how he went from Chekov, a often made fun of side-kick-character to such a complex antagonist.
He really evolved as an actor.
thedragon133 2 years ago 33
@thedragon133, his role was small in comparison with others, but his connection to Sheridan and the Erath Government were key to the show.
