I spent many years in the late 90s with Bill Minkin in LA. This amazingly talented and grossly under-rated funny-man actually wore many hats over the years. Along with his work on several Martin Scorsese films, Minkin was the host of The King Biscuit Flower Hour for more than two decades. King Biscuit and Minkin are a major influence on my show; The California Marijuana Report, a marijuana podcast for NORML. Minkin continues to work as a voice-over artist and day-player in Los Angeles.
it was a USA top-20 national hit, on the label Cameo-Parkway, almost the label's final one (label was HOT in 61-62 with the Twist, Bobby, the Orlons, Mashed Potato e.a.) You can just only buy this record nowadays on the 4CD-box C.P Story ! If that s available still...
That s where I play it from, I possessed the 45 already in 68 in Holland !! (from the bargain bin). It was on our radio as well (Veronica).
Have not heard this one since before He got shot and it was pulled off the radio for all time. But on TV they did not do the ocarina solo and skipped the comments about all Bobby's kids running around the studio. And poor Kate Smith seems totally lost while introducing the act.
I too had this 45 at the tender age of 4 thanks to my beloved teen aunt babysitters. It went everywhere with me, got left in the back of the car where it melted and warped promptly causing me huge distress...lol they had to go out and find me spare copies just to keep me from screaming my lungs out about my terrible loss hehe...good times.
(note) the same thing happened with "Hair" by the Cowsills and "Downtown" by Petula Clark...wow that was rough. Good thing the record store was close by!
I've had this single and album for almost 40 years, but had NEVER seen them perform this!! I'm totally surprised that they actually did this on TV!! Thanx so, SO much for posting this!!
Dennis Wholey, Steve Baron, and Bill Minkin did this and several other humorous take-offs. Dennis Wholey is currently hosting the TV program "This Is America" on PBS.
Mr. Minkin could move ahead with VINEGAH!

My mistake while watching this and doing other stuff at the table. They do do a brief ocarina and comment on Eunice and the kids.

Bill Minkin is Senator Bobby, BTW.
They also did a "Mellow Yellow" song.

Correct if I'm wrong...
