Take a look at the things they were goin through during this time. Watch Some kind of monster, its a great video about the making of St. Anger. Their new albums are respectable, even if you dont like them. Also, their first music wasnt punk, it was thrash metal, a genre they personally invented and popularized back in San Francisco

New Metallica should have stopped with St. Anger.. This is an improvement but nothing beats OLD Metallica. I could probably listen to Death Magnetic once and get bored... However; And Justice For All, Black Album, Ride The Lightning.. Nothing beats them. Except Iron Maiden, they've never done a shit album :L.
