Last night I had brought my ipod in case they had an ipod dock---and after all that we experienced---all the fears, joy and tears---when I arrived home---I put my ipod back in its dock and pressed shuffle---and of the 776 songs, guess which one comes up first? Northern Sky! Can you possibly believe that? I stood there in total amazement---and I knew right then, as I always intuited, that no matter what, I am going to love you forever....
B---"I never felt emotion in the palm of my hand..." The Renaissance forever! The Northern Sky has never shone so brightly or with so much clarity and definition---as Shakespeare wrote in Sonnet 116: "Let me not to the marriage of true minds/Admit impediments---it (love) is an ever-fixed mark/That looks upon tempests and is never shaken/It is the star to every wandering bark (ship)..." Ours is a marriage of two minds, two hearts and two souls--which captured in symbols is 11/11/11...I love you!
First heard this song, and purchased Bryter Layter, Pink Moon and Five Leaves Left in 1973 while living in a dorm room at Kent State University. I'll always be grateful to my roomate, Randy Riley, for the head's up. Hearing Nick Drake in film soundtracks and now even commercials always makes for tearful smiles.
Here's to you Rebecca Bichon. I never got the chance to dance with you and I will regret it for the rest of my life. You were my friend and I miss you so very much.I wish I would of saw the signs of our friendship and what it meant to me. Like always I see things when it's too late.....I loved you my friend. R.I.P...
thank you for the memories and laughs we shared together. I will always cherish those times. I realize now that you gave me "butterflies" whenever I was around you. I MISS YOU..
I am guessing, but I remember back in the 1960's the weather forcaster often used to end their weather forcast with "...and brighter later, northern skies".
I am guessing, but I remember back in the 1960's the weather forcaster often used to end their weather forcast with "...and brighter later, northern skies".
@eyalregev I was wondering the same thing and then it really fascinated me that Nick Drake literally became Bryter, Layter. :-) It's an unfortunate fortune. Hands down the best music I've ever heard. So refreshing!
blow me captain Kubla...It doesn't matter how anyone became aware of it....just that they appreciate it.. The volkswagon ad and this movie should be lauded as introducing a new generation to this genius... Here is to hoping a few more of his tunes get used so we can expose more people who wouldn't normaly have heard him... maybe it will save the musical life of some wouldbe rapper...LOL..so we don't have to hear any more of that crap.
Disgusting. This was a sub par film at the best of times, and Nick Drakes Music was NOTHING whatsoever to do with the cheap and Trashy American pop culture which is currently the Scourge of this world.
Americans 'Discovered' Nick Drakes Music through a fucking Car commercial. Says it all really . These people are Spiritually Bankrupt, and worship only at the altar of themselves and Greed.
well im glad i heard this song in v-dub comc.. all of his songs ade me feel great lots of times!! and im cuban dont know what the ref about american pop! is about!!!
American's appreciate great music too, regardless of how its discovered. One shouldn't lump all people into a single category. Shows how closed minded you are, really. I believe the US has exported its share of great music as well.
I love Norhtern Sky, i love Nick Drake, i love John Cusack, i love Serendipity the movie. And by coincidence, my name is Sara, same as the main cast in this movie. :)
@lakings13 Haha.. Thank you. You know what the funny part about having the name "Sara"? We've been always (at least once) trying to explain to people this: "It's Sara without 'h'".
@steve273 Yeah, we get it mate; you hate America. Whatever. If you don't mean to offend, try not making sweeping, blanket statements. It is quite obnoxious, actually.
im obnoxious-lol your comment is obnoxious-im entitled to like whatever i want to-i like nick drake cos hes so english and so beautiful -if u liked nick drake u would like his englishness too-if u dont thats sad for u -i dont hate americans-but u may choose to believe that i do if u wish-seeing as u know everything already anyway and enjoy insulting ppl-the vid is crass and unrelated to nick drake thats my opinion-its ugly and sitcomish like your opinions
@steve273 Read your own comments, man. Your statements about Americans in such a generalized way is nasty and makes you appear foolish. Nick Drake was amazing -one of the best - and I don't care where he came from. It is about the music, not his nationality (or anyone else's for that matter). If you don't like the video and take exception then vote with your mouse and move on. If you never saw the movie then you don't understand the context of this video. I only care about the music anyway.
Dude, you sound very frustrated. Didnt your life work out? Are you unhappy? The beauty of music is that every person can enjoy it the way he wants. It's the same with poetry, literature etc. etc. The artist makes something and the people enjoy it in their own way.
Alhough a Romcom, I really enjoyed this film and thought ' Northern Sky' was a beautiful song for the soundtrack when the two characters meet again. It is the greatest love song ever, IMO, and this scene was about love.
I knew the tune for a long time (and liked it a lot), when I accidentally watched this movie on tv one night. When the first guitar chord started it made me cry immediately...for me this IS definitely the most beautiful love song of all times.
i also love: which will, road, pink moon, cello song, one of these things first, fly, hazy jane-and others-just depends on the mood-i can see that northern sky is epic and popularist and i love it too [in reply to psirou/mystro810] but which will, road and cello song are easier and less tiresome-i like music u cant kill thru over-playing -like pachabels canon and cherry coloured funk by the cocteau twins the mark clifford mix or mbube by ladysmith black mumbazo -they are all "rounds"
theres a couple documentary's on youtube, in my opinion one of the best singer songwriters of our lifetime, didn't get near enough credit he deserved...
Hey B, It took me all morning to figure out how to leave a comment!..I just could NOT resist... I saw Serendipity Sunday night...I LOVE that movie! I LOVE this song too. They both remind me of you. I LOVE you and miss you so much! xoxo me
I vote for the best Nick Drake song ever. I will admit I did not become a ND fan until the 'Pink Moon" commercials, but then I have been obsessed. He was a musical genius....why he had to leave us so young, is the only question. His music will live forever.
