I am proud my grandfather Milton H. King piloted his own avenger that actually flew over the USS Missouri as the Japanese surrendered. It would be amazing to find one of his old flying buddies via this post.
The coward Bush panicked and jumped without confirming the status of his two crewmen. Both ball gunner and radioman needed that extra bit of time to extricate themselves from the aircraft.Bush did not give them that extra measure. As commander, this was his main concern on bailout procedure. He is solely responsible for the deaths of Ted White and John Delany!
@ghiaclock You are sick. Get some help. When your blind hatred gets to the point that you invent history to fit your conception of reality, you are sick. If there had been a hint of truth in your statement, Bush's opponents would have ripped him a new a**hole during the election, and the American people would have rejected him. Get some help!
@ghiaclock : His Dopey son started the War with Iraq WMD's which ran on for 10 years,Now in Afganistan crippling the USA's economy. because Saddam said he was goin to kill his daddy. What a POS.
What a pity that there was so little actual footage of the Avenger in action. I found that a good deal of the footage had little or nothing to do with this aircraft. Much of the footage was stock footage, a fair amount of it picturing other aircraft. Not a lot of point to this I think.
@Conwaya321 For the americans anything outside of the USA is considered as targets. Whenever americans call something 'World's' they only mean that it's of US origin. Compare it with the 'World series' in baseball which pretty much is unknown and unimportant to the real world.
... funny thing is my father was selected to be a gunner in the TBF and his father cried ... figured it was a death sentance. He went on to become a crewchief in the Pacific on a OSU2 "Duck". Two days after he left back for the states HIS "BESTY" Duck caught fire and burned to a crisp. He cried about that plane. God Bless you Father ~
One a6m2 zero should easily shoot some of them without getting hit by them. If someone wrote here that they had 50mm cannon is fucking retarded almost evey uss fighter or dive bomber had several 12,7mm machine guns on it's wings or at the rear gunner spot.
At the battle of Midway, Lt. Bert Earnest's TBF came back with over 100 holes in it, the elevator cables were shot out but he found that he could still have control using the elevator trim. One wheel wouldn't come down for landing, All the crew had been wounded in some way. The turret gunner had been killed when a 20mm cannon shell exploded in his chest . Bert was still able to land back at Midway. Tough plane, tough crews flying them.
50mm.. so it had 2 inch guns rotfl... wish they'd edit these friggen videos for accuracy, but the military channel would never be the same if they did
Subaro Sakai lost en eye to an Avenger gunner, which he approached from behind and below, think that it was a Wildcat. That .30 popgun came in handy that dat!
No seriously. The whole world as we know it is influenced by this kind of events. I'm not saying the world would be a better place if Bush sr. was not saved back then.
As gunner on TBF -TBM two 50 cal one each wing one 50 cal in turret total three. radio man had 30 cal which was removed on later versions 50 cal = 1/2 inch. it was sometimes referred to as ruptured duck. was a tough old bird
A company in Fredericton, NB Canada was using TBM Avenger bombers as water bombers. One of which was signed by George H. W. Bush during a visit to Canada.
@4everUSNavy .... arguably the second worst president in history, the father REALLY didn't do a great job. but was better than his son, since although he didn't acchieve much, he atleast didn't mess things up for the entire planet for the next decade..
@MrKukenimunnen just to clarify he is talking about Bush senior who was even shot down on a raid and rescued then flew again. Bush Jr. was in the Texas Air Guard, and- naturally- it is kind of a dark area.
lol early american navy aircraft was so slow and bad they almost sucked, lucky they had brave pilots, more luck is the japanese planes didnt have armour and also had bad tactics.
"early american navy aircraft was so slow and bad" Very true. And to make it worse the torpedos on the torpedos bombers were virtually useless. I've read several books on the pacific war and I've never read of a confirmed kill by torpedo bombing in the first year of the war. They went off course, under the ship, or sometimes just bounced off the hull without exploding.
I had NO idea they carried 50mm guns. Man---those are 20mm bigger than what the Warthog carries! No wonder they were such good planes. Uh---wait a minute---could it be they meant 50 cal?
My father flew an Avenger as well, off the deck of the USS Yorktown CV10. He was shot down off the island of Truk in the S. Pacific. Later he AND his crew were rescued by submariners. (unlike Poppy Bush who bailed).
submarines did ALOT of work picking up downed aircrews.. The PBY Catalina saved quite a few as well.. YEOMAN work that goes unnoticed.. thanks for the comment.
Poor historical narrative. Whoever wrote this wasn't close to being a WWII aviation historian.
Probably still in High School.

Given how horrible US torpedoes were prior to 1944 and the lack of crew protection, yeah it was the deadliest aircraft- just not to the enemy.
BlorchHeadblownov 1 year ago 2
@BlorchHeadblownov Yeah, I thought torpedo bombers were considered relatively ineffective versus dive bombers. At least at Midway that was the case.
