When I was little, this song was very popular. My parents were divorcing at the time. To this day I can't listen to it without crying. I think it is a very good song about divorce along with Pink's song, Family Portrait
This is FBI Director Jay Edgar Hooves' farewell song to his FBI agents. He is Father Time leaving his agents in charge of Mother Earth. That's why Jimmy Steward of Planet Earth starred in the movie The FBI Story. Goodbye, Mr. Chips, you really did have thousands of sons, even though the public thought you had none. Mister Ed, the Talking Horse, doesn't help people with horse problems. Just like Robert Redford said in The Horse Whisperer, Hooves helps horses with people problems.
Sonny and Cher divorced around the same time as my parents. And I am about the same age as their daughter. I remember an interview with Sonny discussing their divorce. It helped me understand my parents splitting up. Sonny had a personality similar to my father's. My grandmother loved the Sonny & Cher show but hated Cher's outfits especially the bare midriffs.
Dam finally got all the way through this video on 1/9/2010. I tried to watch like over 30 time from some time in 2010 to 2011 not all in one day. This is because of the dam scary ass mannequins.
This was listed in Slipped Discs: The Worst Rock and Roll Records of All Time...I didn't think this was horrible, but thank you, and thank you, YouTube for existing and posting stuff that I've read about!
@SS421982 Yes, it's actually number eight on a list of 50, so according to the authors, it's way up there. It's a really funny book, as they use humor in their writing, but there are several notable songs on the list which I don't think should be there. "American Pie" for one. They also list 50 of the worst albums too. It's still an interesting book. Wonder what would make this list if they updated it for today!
@GloriaD5767 Thanks! That sounds interesting. I'm going to check that book out. I would include almost everything that's been recorded in the last 10 years at least. Just kidding, but I think a large majority of music today is horrendous.
@SS421982 The book was written in the 1990s I think...but I agree, if they or someone else puts out another "worst records" book, I think a lot of stuff in the last 10 years would go in it. Funny, I never really listened to the radio after Blondie's "Rapture," but now I think 80s and 90s music (as well as 70s) sounds better than ever.
Sonny should be singing this not Cher........its a song from the father to his kids. Just shows ya who wore the pants in that family.....LOL!!! I'm not putting down Cher, I'm a huge fan of hers. Wish I could belt out a song like she does!!
this is the first time I have heard this song...just as I am thinking of Mark tonight...he speaks to me through the lyrics in this song as well...this was a gift to me today...both sad and happy to know.
on 24july1972 a close friend of mine got hit by a car almost in front of his house, and died. tommy donlon was his name we were 14, when i hear this song i think of him. it makes me cry, the part that goes, well i have to go now. tommy i still miss you so much. 1972 is a long time ago. just remember i love you. tommy donlon 14sept1957-24july1972. tommy is buried in calvery cem waltham mass, we had just got out of 9th grade- tommy i will see you at the cross road of life.
Sonny was very underrated as a writer. Yes, his chord progressions were simple, but he had visions of exactly how he wanted the songs to sound. I always thought the little instrumental at the end of this song was really first-rate and wonderfully complex - I'd love to hear an extended version of it.
i always thought this was a libretto like an opera. the first section was the dad always cheering the kids-- the second "say yu prayers.." was the bitch ogre mom -- of course a broken family. the bitch ogre is what their daughters all turned out to be. but not chastity
This is one of my favorite Cher tracks- so that book knows nothing. :) Then again, Cher has never been a critics' favorite.
