Hell Yeah! I thought I was being weird because my previous coach told me to aim for the square behind the rim, but I find better results if I aimed for the net. Finally, some experts actually approve! Thanks!
i've never been coached as a player before and i found that aiming for this "nest" was extremely beneficial. i discovered this fact about a month ago on my own just shooting around. it was really cool to see a video that agreed with my found theory. it took me from not making a three... EVER to being able to hit 6-8 in a row!
@Antonio12Goncalves The spreading of the thumb to elevate the ball off the palm is NOT ABOUT rotation. It is about control of the basketball. The thumb and the little finger allow us to grip the ball and gives us better control.
I was actually practicing my shots not that long ago, and I realized that this was in fact the best method. (This was before watching this very great video though). And you're right, I noticed my ratio was far greater aiming for the "nest" of the basket! I was always taught to aim at the backboard but I noticed it never really worked. This video makes me more confident that the technique I picked up is a very good one, Love the video!
@neekkuu Well this could be a factor. Why not spend 2-3 dollars and buy yourself a net that you can take to the courts and put up when you shoot. It takes 3 minuters to put it up and about the same to take it down. We know that shooting on a hoop without a net is a drag and probably is less of a target.
hey coach im the best shooter on my basketball team with 3 Pointers and i have a with shooting the basketball a little left and right slighty but i hav the right amount of arc can u help me?
@Hootersman4 What would really help us to help you is for you to post a videos of yourself shooting so we can see what you are doing. We will be waiting for it!

@SlayPlays Please go to our YT channel and find the video on Form Shooting Drill. This will help you establish the proper mechanics and work on them to develop a shot that is "Repeatable" often referred to as "Muscler Memory." Use this drill every week to make sure that your stroke stays the same.
@ShotScience You guys know what your doing Do you guys reccomend any fitness exercise Im willing to do any thing IF we lose to sacramento next week Were out and eliminated Our three point shooter Michael and PG Kevin are out [injured] now all the pressure is on me they expect me To lead them to the finals Its Tuff i got stress Im super nervous If I dont get the shot i want soon The loss would be tuff on me you guys seem good wow im just tired of missing easy jumpshots Its so Embarrising
@xxCaLixxShAdOw Well, we hope you can relax and get the job done. any shooting elements that would help you usually take a few weeks to get down enough to help you. We wish we could offer you more support and direction, but the time elements are a bit too tight! Anyway, let's give it the best you have and "RELAX" BECAUSE THE PRESSURE WILL HAMPER YOUR PLAY. Let us know how it goes for you.
@xxCaLixxShAdOw So you can't make a simple jumpshot, airball consistantly, say you have no accuracy, the players on your team are better then you, and if you get a shot of you always miss...yet you average 22 ppg, 7rbs, and 5 assist and are on an elite team? Yup sounds reasonable.
@IHawk3ye sounds weird does it im not saying i suck Now that that shit has passed im getting better Look im on a good team I average good points But as u can see here i was worried since we barely won a team sacramento I realized after the game i was missing jumpshots airballing and stuff i was conceited not anymore
@ShotScience They are elite ball players They are way better than I am Ive been practicing and well ive studied theyre shooting ways and i found out everybody has a way of shooting it well you know im not that bad at all average 22ppg 7rbs and like 5 assists ive tried so many ways of shooting honestly I have trouble in the 3pt line I cant jumshot if i do I really miss I Get real Pressued when shooting so i miss a lot Thats the reason i asked you guys if you could help since from what ive seen
@ShotScience Hey i tried the new shooting form and at time Like i said My shots come short airballs or the have no accuracy I have no idea how much Do i need to bend my elbow i play 4 a team in paramount CA yes like i said we are kinda of certain we are going to make the finals as long as we get passed sacramento and south gate ive showed my teamates your videos and they keep sayin to quit wasting my time that i need practice not form theyre helping me soon ill show them.........
@ShotScience ok ill give it a try ill tell you how it turns out thanks man ive really tried asking people oh and buy the way my friend shoots with no backspin none at all he is able to make it is that the correct way to shoot a basketball its very different then the way you said
@xxCaLixxShAdOw Well think about this! We can make baskets with our eyes closed, but that doesn't mean that that is the proper way to shoot the ball. Decide what you want to do with your stroke and go with it. We know our system works. I have six players on my team right now who shoot with our stroke and the hit 10 threes tonight and 9 threes the last game. This is just how we do it!
@ShotScience Thanks Im would just aprecciate if someone helped out Like i get confused how much do you need to bend your legs how much to bend your shooting elbow where to release its a habbit i cant change nba players shoot it effortlessly my teamates are good jumpshooters except for me ineed to lean foward and jump foward and shoot with my right [with backspin] always make it now i suck learnig follow through and the technique
@xxCaLixxShAdOw Let this answer all three of your questions. First you really need to start over on your shot, but you may want to wait until the season is over. At that time we recommend that you review all of our shooting videos and re-shape your shot. It will take a few weeks, but you can do it. Let us know how it goes for you. All the answers to your comments and questions can be found in our shooting videos. Watch them and take notes, then take them to the court!
@ShotScience its hard i just cant find thay extra power where do i get it i am used to leanig foward and sticking out my left foot i just want to be be ready for my basketball finals next march so yeah i have plenty of time to practice its like i feel different in every shot compared to when i would lean foward i would have like a muscle memory and i would always make them now i take jumpshots but i cant seem to find that extra power event i do make it its not back to back
@ShotScience ive alwayys had a way of shooting as a kid like i would lean foward for power dramatically i always made them its like if i was so used to it i could always make recently ive heard thats not the way to shoot it you need to bend your elbow then follow throw Its hard to do that since i am use to getting power for leaning foward any tips on why i keep missing on this new form of shooting?
@Fr3aks7eR Okay! We watched your shooting free throws. The stroke mechanics look really good. We would recommend that you hold your finish until the ball goes in the basket or hits the rim. This completes the stroke, whereas if you drop you shooting hand too early the shot often will be short. We also recommend that you stagger your feet to a "toe-to-Arch" position rather than squared up. This allows for better stability and delivery point. Otherwise, it looks very good!
@JClutch26 Well Clutch, the sideways rotation is usually caused by the Assist Hand thumb at the moment of release. Check this out! Sometimes it is caused by the release being off the last three fingers of your shooting hand instead of the first two.
@ShotScience Hi Coach, I'm 14 and I'm a PF. I always play under ring. Sometimes, in some situation, I need to shoot when i'm wide open(same as SF). I can't do a good shooting - My shoot is powerful enough to reach 2P shot but i can't control them well unless I do under ring. You teach us how to target the rim in the free throw area in this video. Does this way of targeting is same like when we are not in the free throw line? such as more to the Left or Right?. I'm afraid if i become a burden.
@BurakkuCroWs The answer to your question is in this video. Go back and review it several times to get an understanding of the elements of the target.
if your shooting is short in a game you would want to aim towards the back and if its going long shoot to the front of it. dont listen to everything these guys say.
I liked this video and chuckled at the "backboard" method, aiming for the "sweet spot". I've always thought that idea was comical......
I always envisioned the target as some abstract, non aimable horizon....."the nest" is an interesting concept and, I now realize, the idea I've had in mind for a long time.
Combining some tips from u guys, i came up with this and its some how quite effective for me. After getting the legs bend and elevated, I usually would keep my eyes at the point about a fist above the rim, and let my ball target tat spot and most of the times the ball doesn't hit any way too far behind or infront the rim. The only thing to worry is the back spin and to make sure there is no side spin and 9 times out of 10 when i do tat my shot is perfect, SWOOSH!
@ShotScience Yea great! Anw can u guys make a video solely on shooting, from the most fundamentals like grip to how to perfect ur shooting? And can u guys make a video on court vision and rebounding? I'd be really glad to see more videos from u guys cos they are all very beneficial to me :D
@WesleyToh we do have videos on a lot of that stuff already. We are, however, working on making more ;-) Check out our video library or our playlists and you'll find a lot of what you're looking for!
Just wanna say.......THESE VIDEOS ARE....MMOOOOOOOONEYYYY! I shoot a whole lot better because of them, thank you very much for them. The aimming for the nest thing is GOLD, i now expect nothing but nylon and have grown accustom to that sweet net music! Shooting now at most times wit EASE,all thanks to you guys. Thanks again. When i got problems i come straight to you guys
i allways target to the nest but i cant get in :\ what can i do? P.S i am 6.4 and i have good shooting and i am working on my shooting when i watch your video its helping me a lot
@TheAviel32 Go to our videos on our YT channel and find the video entitled "Get Perfect Shooting Form." This drill is so important in establishing your stroke mechanics and "Muscle Memory."
@macdon61 There are many more videos coming. We are under-going some new editing software problems, but they are on the way. Please stay tuned and "Spread the Word."
@BasketballQuestions Okaaaay! How long have been trying to execute the shot as we describe in our videos. We abide by our "Nest" description as the real target. It usually take about 3-4 weeks to get this working for you. We have literally used this system with thousands of students and when they get it down they usually can really shoot it. However, you must do what you feel will work for you.
@drmarkmadarang Thank you for your very nice comment. We really appreciate it very much and please stay tuned for more to hopefully help out the WW's.
@george26664 Well george, how cool is that? It pleases us to know that we are able to reach players who still have the spark for the game. Go for it!!
@daanmagier Let your eyes focus on the entire rim and the open space in the middle. We named this "The Nest" because thats where we want to place that Egg!!!!
@ShotScience does the grip on the ball affect your shot becuase sometimes when play with a ball with no grip at all it slips of my hand when im shooting so should i get a ball with grip so it wont slip?
so that's it i cant shoot because im focusing in my shooting form so that is why i cant shoot it lately i practicing so i must aim for the hole of the ring thanks for this video coach it helps my shooting skills thanks pls support shotscience thanks again next is how to improve my vertical endurance and leap
I have perfect shooting form but I've always aimed at the back of the rim. Percentage wise in training I shoot just as good as anyone who practices regularly. I am compelled to try changing my shooting target though -- when I miss they usually hit the back of the rim and yes sometimes long rebounds and I feel my shooting is a bit flat when I get tired.
I'll try changing my target and see how my practice goes the next few days.
@MrLasombra6 The rim only outlines the "Nest." It should not matter if the basket has five rings. That's not what you should focus on. The NEST!!!!!!!
When I go shooting, I review my "form" and everything is aparentement OK.But ALWAYS hit the ball in front of the rim Coach.I don't understand my mistake.
The basket has no net, it can disturb my focus between the rim?
@WolfNba Please check out our "Interactive Basketball Shooting" video for a solution to your problem. The basket having no net should not be a problem for you.
Hey coach! I think the nest idea is perfect, but i find that it is hard for me to focus on the nest since its inbetween the front and back rim any help to focus on the nest easily?
@XxS0uThxP4WxX you want to soften your focus and just use the open area of the rim. It's just like if you were to lay a dart board down on top of the rim. You're not going to aim for the front or back of the rim. You're going to aim to where the "bullseye" is. Imagine the center of the rim is the "bullseye!"
Hey Coach I'm having a bit of trouble locking in on the nest how do Itain/practice that I apply all of the other tips but how can I lock in on the nest?
@goldenknicks It is all about spending your practice time working on the element. After some time your connection with the nest should improve a lot. PRACTICE, PRACTICE and then PRACTICE some more!!!
Coach, I have this problem where, when I have the ball in my hands, I panic a little, and when I take the shot; I end up missing. Do you have any type of tips for players like myself?
@Purecf2 Unquestionably, you do not have confidence with the ball. Confidence will come from many hours of practicing and playing the game. Your fear of losing the ball is the reason for the panic. We recommend that you watch our other videos to learn how to protect the ball. When you get this down your confidence will soar. Let's get on this tomorrow!!!!!
Coach, any ideas on how to improve concentration and focus when shooting and on the court. I have a difficulty on this issue when I'm on the courts shooting. I try to aim the nest but somehow keep hitting bricks, or the front rim..Sometimes I hit an airball, I keep getting so many things occuring when I'm practicising whilst panic occurs during game situations.. Asides practice, any tips you gave to your 2 boys to help them stay focused on the nest and the game?
@LFC4LIFE25: It sounds very much like your shots are under-powered. This is something that you can usually "FEEL." If the shot "FEELS EFFORTLESS" then you have connected the leg power to your stroke. Shots that consistently come up short are usually underpowered and this gets worse when we get farther from the basket. If you are consistently hitting the back rim, your shot is probably too flat in its arc. See our videos "Get Your Legs Into It" and Get the Perfect Arc for more information.
@damond2324: Well we would advise your shooting a bank shot from the elbow. Poor angle for this shot. When at this location we recommend your focusing on the "NEST." Bank shots could be used when you are at more of an angle to the backboard.
@damond2324: Typically, you aim for th near upper corner of the target box. As the angle becomes more severe you may want to shoot for a spot above the upper near corner.
I'm a left hand shooter. Can you please give me tips or anything on how to shoot properly with my left hand. I feel as if I'm not shooting correctly. Thanks.
@MrRetla1: All mechanics for your shot are exactly the same for the left hand as the right. You merely use the opposing mechanics with the left hand. Nothing changes. If you feel you are not shooting correctly you might make a video of your shot to analyze it for proper stroke mechanics. You could also send it to us and we will analyze it for as well.
Hey , I know this has nothing related to do with this video , But I play one on one with this guy , I am very slow and hes like the fastest guy on the court .....Even time i dribble he tries to steal the ball and if i catch him off guard and go to the rim , he catches up .... He acts like hes taking the ball from the front and takes it from behind . or he just takes it from front .... Can u make a video or just type a reply to this comment . THANK YOU !
@RONALDONITIN: Well, when you know his strengths and what he does to frustrate you, you need to learn how to protect the ball and find some ways to counter his quickness. You mention he reaches around behind you and so you need to push the ball out front so her can't reach it when you get by him. Check out our video "Protecting The Basketball (The Box)." This will probably help to understand how to take care of the ball.
I have nothing against Tom here, but i was told to aim for the back of the front part of the rim because this is an easier target and my results shooting have increased when doing so. Can you explain better to me how your aiming method is better? Thanks
@theallstarxx4: Hey, whatever works for you is the best deal. We have our beliefs and we feel that if you aim for the rim you are very likely to hit it and hitting the rim is usually not a goal.
@AwesomeJanice: Well AwesomeJ, you need to spend time on "GAME SPEED" shooting. We practice and often never get to game speed and when we are faced with this situation in games our shooting goes bad! Practice shooting speed is really necessary, however, shooting at game speed is really important to be able to execute in game play. Work on that "Game Speed Shooting!"
absolutly love your videos they have helped me so much on my shot! hoping to start varsity next year plan to soak up all the info i can thanks for all the help!
I shoot with my right hand and I have always wondered something. I see Kobe Bryant shoot and a lot of players shoot. Most seem like their right hand(Shooting Hand), goes toward the rim in front of their right eye. Is this a good thing to do? I've wondered because, sometimes when I shoot and my arm doesn't go toward the basket like I described, I miss.
I always aim for the part of the rim that holds the net. theres about 10 different little triangles that hold the net equally spaced out on the rim. That way, no matter where I am on the court, there is always one of those triangles for me to kind of pretend like i'm grabbing when I follow through. It's worked for me all my life.
@Incorepted Just put more power on your shot and aim for the square on the backboard. You can lean forward too if you don't want to change your form or anything.
@mwillia1026: This is REALLY POOR ADVICE!!!!! Get to work on the PROPER FUNDAMENTALS OF SHOOTING and then your shot will get better. Review all of our shooting videos as many times as you need to and get the shot right!!!!!
@mwillia1026U: Your shot may be very good and we are certainly happy for an "Old Dog," however, we would like to help players who are asking us about their shots to not be misled on the shooting elements.
Thanks for your participation and we hope an "old Dog" can learn some things from our videos as well.
@ShotScience You're right, I apologize. I did learn something btw. I watched your drop step video and first step video and I've already improved in both of those areas.
@TjRaemisch: Well you focus your vision on the interior of the basket which you see from the bottom of the basket. You eye focus on it just like you focusing on the back rim.
Is that we only have to feel it instead of aiming?

m3v2p 2 months ago
@m3v2p Bringing the ball to your set point needs to be fairly quick, but remember your power comes from those legs more than your arms.

Some advice about my shot ? /watch?v=DVQhGyB94EM
Fr3aks7eR 2 months ago
@Fr3aks7eR Okay! We watched your shooting free throws. The stroke mechanics look really good. We would recommend that you hold your finish until the ball goes in the basket or hits the rim. This completes the stroke, whereas if you drop you shooting hand too early the shot often will be short. We also recommend that you stagger your feet to a "toe-to-Arch" position rather than squared up. This allows for better stability and delivery point. Otherwise, it looks very good!

@ShotScience Thank you very mucht I appreciate your advice!

hey coach. My form is great but i have sidespin on my shot. What drills should I do or do you have any tips get backspin???
JClutch26 2 months ago
@JClutch26 Well Clutch, the sideways rotation is usually caused by the Assist Hand thumb at the moment of release. Check this out! Sometimes it is caused by the release being off the last three fingers of your shooting hand instead of the first two.
ShotScience 2 months ago
@ShotScience Hi Coach, I'm 14 and I'm a PF. I always play under ring. Sometimes, in some situation, I need to shoot when i'm wide open(same as SF). I can't do a good shooting - My shoot is powerful enough to reach 2P shot but i can't control them well unless I do under ring. You teach us how to target the rim in the free throw area in this video. Does this way of targeting is same like when we are not in the free throw line? such as more to the Left or Right?. I'm afraid if i become a burden.
BurakkuCroWs 2 months ago
@BurakkuCroWs The answer to your question is in this video. Go back and review it several times to get an understanding of the elements of the target.
ShotScience 2 months ago
if your shooting is short in a game you would want to aim towards the back and if its going long shoot to the front of it. dont listen to everything these guys say.

@xedinx3 Well this sounds good, but doesn't work. Everyone is certainly able to choose to do what evert they desire, no question there!

coach i have a very good arc but it always ends up to hit the front the back of the rim
rcarius123 3 months ago
I liked this video and chuckled at the "backboard" method, aiming for the "sweet spot". I've always thought that idea was comical......
I always envisioned the target as some abstract, non aimable horizon....."the nest" is an interesting concept and, I now realize, the idea I've had in mind for a long time.

ShotScience 3 months ago
Combining some tips from u guys, i came up with this and its some how quite effective for me. After getting the legs bend and elevated, I usually would keep my eyes at the point about a fist above the rim, and let my ball target tat spot and most of the times the ball doesn't hit any way too far behind or infront the rim. The only thing to worry is the back spin and to make sure there is no side spin and 9 times out of 10 when i do tat my shot is perfect, SWOOSH!
WesleyToh 4 months ago
@WesleyToh Sounds great to us! That's essentially the same concept as the Nest in our books ;-)

Ok ShotScience i have some questions for you:
1 How can you focus on the "nest" if the rim is between your eyes and the "nest"?
2 Why are you calling the net the "nest" ?
daanmagier 5 months ago
@daanmagier Let your eyes focus on the entire rim and the open space in the middle. We named this "The Nest" because thats where we want to place that Egg!!!!

ShotScience 7 months ago
I have perfect shooting form but I've always aimed at the back of the rim. Percentage wise in training I shoot just as good as anyone who practices regularly. I am compelled to try changing my shooting target though -- when I miss they usually hit the back of the rim and yes sometimes long rebounds and I feel my shooting is a bit flat when I get tired.
I'll try changing my target and see how my practice goes the next few days.
papynchase 7 months ago
@papynchase Really get that higher arc working for you as well. That's really important for scoring, especially when you are tired.

Coach, i have a problem when i practice on y shot because i am shooting on a double rim do you have a solution 2 my problem
MrLasombra6 7 months ago
@MrLasombra6 The rim only outlines the "Nest." It should not matter if the basket has five rings. That's not what you should focus on. The NEST!!!!!!!
ShotScience 7 months ago 5
Hello Coach !
I'm having a problem.
When I go shooting, I review my "form" and everything is aparentement OK.But ALWAYS hit the ball in front of the rim Coach.I don't understand my mistake.
The basket has no net, it can disturb my focus between the rim?
Thanks !

@WolfNba Please check out our "Interactive Basketball Shooting" video for a solution to your problem. The basket having no net should not be a problem for you.
ShotScience 7 months ago
Hey coach! I think the nest idea is perfect, but i find that it is hard for me to focus on the nest since its inbetween the front and back rim any help to focus on the nest easily?
XxS0uThxP4WxX 8 months ago
@XxS0uThxP4WxX you want to soften your focus and just use the open area of the rim. It's just like if you were to lay a dart board down on top of the rim. You're not going to aim for the front or back of the rim. You're going to aim to where the "bullseye" is. Imagine the center of the rim is the "bullseye!"

Coach, I have this problem where, when I have the ball in my hands, I panic a little, and when I take the shot; I end up missing. Do you have any type of tips for players like myself?
Purecf2 8 months ago
@Purecf2 Unquestionably, you do not have confidence with the ball. Confidence will come from many hours of practicing and playing the game. Your fear of losing the ball is the reason for the panic. We recommend that you watch our other videos to learn how to protect the ball. When you get this down your confidence will soar. Let's get on this tomorrow!!!!!
ShotScience 8 months ago
Coach, any ideas on how to improve concentration and focus when shooting and on the court. I have a difficulty on this issue when I'm on the courts shooting. I try to aim the nest but somehow keep hitting bricks, or the front rim..Sometimes I hit an airball, I keep getting so many things occuring when I'm practicising whilst panic occurs during game situations.. Asides practice, any tips you gave to your 2 boys to help them stay focused on the nest and the game?
LFC4LIFE25 8 months ago
@LFC4LIFE25: It sounds very much like your shots are under-powered. This is something that you can usually "FEEL." If the shot "FEELS EFFORTLESS" then you have connected the leg power to your stroke. Shots that consistently come up short are usually underpowered and this gets worse when we get farther from the basket. If you are consistently hitting the back rim, your shot is probably too flat in its arc. See our videos "Get Your Legs Into It" and Get the Perfect Arc for more information.
ShotScience 8 months ago
so what do i aim for if im on the elbow looking for a bank shot? the top of the square or the middle inside the square?
damond2324 8 months ago
@damond2324: Well we would advise your shooting a bank shot from the elbow. Poor angle for this shot. When at this location we recommend your focusing on the "NEST." Bank shots could be used when you are at more of an angle to the backboard.
ShotScience 8 months ago
so what do i aim for in a bank shot? the top of the square or in the middle of it?
damond2324 8 months ago
@damond2324: Typically, you aim for th near upper corner of the target box. As the angle becomes more severe you may want to shoot for a spot above the upper near corner.
ShotScience 8 months ago
Is there an advantage over aiming for the nest vs the center of the basket?
DSREK7 8 months ago
@DSREK: These two targets are "one -n-the Same."
ShotScience 8 months ago
the nest sometimes work but sometimes i cant curve the ball
TheRandomExperince 8 months ago
@TheRandomExperince: There is no reason to curve the ball. It should follow a direct path to the basket for you be accurate.

I'm a left hand shooter. Can you please give me tips or anything on how to shoot properly with my left hand. I feel as if I'm not shooting correctly. Thanks.
MrRetla1 9 months ago

THANK YOU !
RONALDONITIN 9 months ago
@RONALDONITIN: Well, when you know his strengths and what he does to frustrate you, you need to learn how to protect the ball and find some ways to counter his quickness. You mention he reaches around behind you and so you need to push the ball out front so her can't reach it when you get by him. Check out our video "Protecting The Basketball (The Box)." This will probably help to understand how to take care of the ball.
ShotScience 9 months ago
I have nothing against Tom here, but i was told to aim for the back of the front part of the rim because this is an easier target and my results shooting have increased when doing so. Can you explain better to me how your aiming method is better? Thanks
theallstarxx4 9 months ago
@theallstarxx4: Hey, whatever works for you is the best deal. We have our beliefs and we feel that if you aim for the rim you are very likely to hit it and hitting the rim is usually not a goal.
ShotScience 9 months ago
@shot science somehow in clucth situations I shoot the ball differently my mechanics seem to fly out the window any help to fix this
AwesomeJanice 9 months ago
@AwesomeJanice: Well AwesomeJ, you need to spend time on "GAME SPEED" shooting. We practice and often never get to game speed and when we are faced with this situation in games our shooting goes bad! Practice shooting speed is really necessary, however, shooting at game speed is really important to be able to execute in game play. Work on that "Game Speed Shooting!"
