Gabriel Byrne, In Treatment: Paul/Laura "Answer"

...this affecttion can be explained - the therapist, if he or she is true and empathic, offers unconditional positive regard, a safe place to disclose feelings that may scare others. They do not run when the going gets tough. This feels good, but this is not love. I am disappointed that the writers had Paul display affection toward this character, who does a great job of portraying Laura, by the way. But she acts like a teenager looking to get a reaction - not attractive. Grow up, Laura.

I am a licensed therapist. I heard about this show from one of my patients! This is drama, true, but unlike others here, I cannot see what Paul sees in Laura. Do you really think this is love? His marriage is shaky, he is having major challenges with his boundaries. What does he know about her? Or Laura about Paul? Other than what she confesses to him in sessions. This is not uncommon for patients to feel affection for their therapists...

My counselor was gentle, kind, patient. We parted & went down different paths & I thought our story had ended. Instead, after years, distance & many changes in each of our lives, our paths crossed again under different ircumstances. We fell in love & are still in a relationship. For us, maybe love did begin to blossom in a therapist office. Caution-in most cases it's a bad idea. Reality is harsher than fantasy, its potentially psych dangerous plus there's judgement by others.

Laura is DEFINITELY someone I'd want to save and hold and love and cherish, despite her flaws and weaknesses. Melissa George was spot-on playing her and so alluring, it hurts! If Dr. Paul Weston had to deny her, I'd DEFINITELY scoop her up!

Please we all know that in real life a psychologist would not behave in this fashion, but we must give Gabriel Byrne credit for his incredible acting skills , and his superior non verbal communication skills. He just can make me melt!!! This is one of the best videos of all times. Gabriel is such a great actor. Handsome, intelligent and great verbal and non verbal communication skills. Not many men can live up to these standards.

By the way,the therapist as written for Byrne is a very terrible therapist and hasn't a clue as to what he is doing(so is his "superviso also terrible) but this is a scripted role and too many people are smitten with Gabriel BYrne as a good looking man(who is seriously depressed)and they(women) love his hands and his smile and his softness.American therapists are usually not all that seductive--Byrne is way way too seductive.

Haha that´s funny! I'm really glad they take this up in a series. No therapist who writes books ever talks about it! (except that clients fall in love withTHEM.) (never the other way around.) Actually, I only know ONE therapist who wrote about it. Erich Fromm! (who married his therapist Frieda Reichmann.) (she was "Dr. Fried" in the novel/film "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden".) It happened to me and MY therapist! (but he couldn't handle it. He just broke my heart.) :-(
