Loved this when I heard it way back in 85 on the John Peel show - in fact I taped it from the radio! Sad that the irony has completely escaped the adman and the track has been grabbed by the world of commerce - to sell clothes! The music (re-recorded and with different lyrics) is now the backing track for an M&S advert on UK television.
@step666dale I think you'll find the M&S advert (Cheryl Lynn) version came first and that it was Brother D who sampled her song and added new lyrics - it was seeing the M&S advert on telly last night that reminded me of this fantastic song that I hadn't heard in 20 odd years by the way!
Ah yeah, thanks. So they gave wrong information in the media? That's real irritating ... but ... maybe it was the first female African American MAIN ACTOR what I read (from my fuzzy memory, a couple of media wrote it the correct way). Thanks for your information.
@pianoman74 halle berry's oscar win was significant, because Denzel won best actor. It was the first time the best actor and actress winners were both black
"Race against time-Racial Heresies for the 21st Century". A must read for all humans. A thought provoking and informative read. It speaks volumes about the who, what, and where...
I've always been intrigued by Brother D's connections to reggae. Such as his joint cassette release with Silver Fox (on Clappers/ROIR). It would be nice to hear him tell his story. Do you know any interviews your dad might have done?
Clapper Records has a 10 minute interview of Lister Hewan-Lowe, producer, describing the making of the record. The woman with the high voice was pregnant.
*Bob Marley 1948 - 1981. Born in Jamaica & died in Miami.
Was a reggae songwriter/singer/musician and activist. As with his predecessor Marcus Garvey, Bob Marley also wanted black people to *repatriate to Africa.
Think about this for a second...THIS SONG CAME OUT IN 1980!!!!!!!! It's 2008, and we are dealing with the same problems. Talk about foreshadowing??? :0
YEAH VIC!!!!!! This is Classic & thank you for puttin me onto this bro. "The people call me brother D, and I'm here to shed some light.... wrote this verse in the INTEREST OF THE GROUP". WOW. Truth is here we have to WANT IT enough to "agitate, educate & organize"
Yo jes102, Marley & Garvey have to live through US!
which part? "living thru us is exactly what u did by posting the bios and life mission of those great men. "Agitate, educate, & organize" is what was chanted toward the end of the video. For blacks to rise we have to change our ways and stand up to this system designed to keep us second class citizens(agitate) by seeking knowledge that will rise our consciousness (educate), & lead to us coming together to make our lives better for ourselves in all areas of social activity (organize). "aww yeah now that's a plan, i swear on mother africa's honor that i will do that."

There was even another rap, a few years later. Kind of a duet where the man hits on the woman and the woman repeatedly states 'I've got a man'..

Visionary track. For me the Black Nation had clearly risen when the first African American presenter came on MTV Awards.
Nor do I think that any black woman before got an Oscar before Halle Berry.
