  • Like the editing tricks, very pro, keep it up Thanks

  • my is not picking it up and am on windows 7 what should i do ?

  • Best tutorial iv found yet. succinct and clear and informative of all the options not everybody chooses. Thanx :D

  • REALLY IMPORTANT QUESTION!

Is there a data usage (Upload & download limit) on this device or am I free to download & upload as much as I desire?

    PLEASE REPLY! URGENT!

    IT WILL BE VERY APPRECIATED!

  • @oSydro Hi sorry i missed this question before.

But the the time capsule is just a gateway for your network. So it won't limit your upload and download speeds. The only limits are from your broadband package you have with your ISP and if there's a data cap or not in your package.

    Hope this makes sense.

  • @DanWantsTech Thank you and can this replace my current broadband provider?

What I mean is can I just use THIS and THIS ONLY for my internet connection? (No internet provider, no extra router)

If so, that means I can just plug this into the wall, set it up on my iMac and use this as my only internet connection without being with a internet/broadband provider e.g. Eircom, Vodafone and UPC.

Thank you so much, my Dad will be delighted if this is true! :D

  • @oSydro well you have to sign up with an internet provider to get broadband, this box doesn't provide it, it's only a gateway that connects your computers and wireless devices together, it has to, in turn, be connected to a router that is provided by either Eircom, UPC, Vodafone etc.

You'll have to buy a package from them and connect the time capsule to the ISP router you get. I think you might be confused as to what the time capsule is for?

  • How do you Set Your Apple Time Capsule As A Primary Base Station not wireless

  • @EIRExPETER as in you just want to use it as a backup device? or as a network hub kind of thing...

  • You, my friend, are a little legend. Thank you

  • @TheSimonhutty22 haha no problem ;D

  • is it possible to use this device to connect to my main router wirelessly then connect my xbox to the time capsule to use the interet?

  • Umm...it doesn't recognize my TC...Any Suggestions?

  • Hi , I love your tutorial but , the first 2 minutes of it and i've already encountered a problem with my new Time Capsule. Yes , the status is exactly like yours , but my Airport Utility can't seem to detect my Time Capsule weather connected to my iMac or not with an Ethernet Cable. Please help.

  • Hi Dan, i was under the impression that if a TC was found with default settings and you created a new network i thought it would give you the option somewhere to switch wireless networks.

  • @SuperCubboy switch wireless networks where? the time capsules network or on your computer? :L

  • Daniel this was a great video, well done! Can you advise me on what programme you used to show picture in picture views, magnification of the sections you were explaining etc. Is it video tutorial software, if so which one, where do I get it and how much is it. This would be brilliant for a project im working on. Many thanks in advance.

  • @acb1469 the software i usually use for this is Screenflow, it's a Mac only application though. It's available from Telestream to download, i think it's around $99 to buy. Just google "screenflow" It's a very good app.

  • @Bobriley45 Agreed wholeheartedly. Only listened 38 Secs....

  • @sngncwby as i said to @bobriley I don't talk as fast anymore. I had only started making videos back then. It takes practice you know...

  • hey guy.... your talking so fast no one can understand what your saying and digest the thoughts. You are not talking to a crowd of people that understand this machine, we are trying to to learn how to put it in and learn more about it. If you can't teach properly, find something else to do because this is not your specialty.

  • @bobriley45 well I'm really sorry about that but that's just the way this particular video is. I did make that over a year ago and I know I used to talk very fast. I have improved my "teaching" skills since. Hopefully my newer videos aren't as verbally complicated :P

  • very helpful :)

  • Hi, so it backs up your files wirelessly and automatically.

But what happens when you delete a file off your mac? does it delete it off the time capsule hd?

  • Hi, cool VID! One question, can I use it with a Ipad2 and if I can take it with me every place I go? thanks

  • Great Video! I have a question. I reset my TC to factory default because it used to belong to someone else, I went through the steps you describe until I got to the window that asks me for a WPA password. I created a wireless password and clicked continue and nothing happened. It won't let me get to the next window. Tried the whole process several times and had the same problem. Can you help? Thanks!

  • Hi Dan, i presume the TC has to be connected to the modem at all times?? Am i right or just being dumb. Thanks

  • @SuperCubboy ye it does, unless you just want to use it as a hard drive

  • r u british?

  • @stephenmills1 I'm Irish (Ireland), it's beside the UK.

  • Can you use it like a hard drive

  • @EIRExPETER Ye you can set it up to be used as a wireless external HD on the setup screen. It'll connect to your current network.

  • Ha can you put your iTunes library on the time capsule

  • can u use this as a External HD? or does it only back up your mac

  • @antonspi yes, you can connect it to your current setup and use it as an external wireless HD. Just select that option in the setup screen

  • can you use it without connecting it with an internet cable?

  • @theoharis27 sure you can, just set it to add to your current network when you set it up

  • Can this be used as JUST a backup device, and have nothing whatsoever to do with my router / modem ?

  • @BIGPIMPINUPDANYC yes, when you're setting it up, in the wizard, just select to add it to your existing network and it can be used just as a backup device

  • Just wondering how do you make the video so clear in 360p and how do you add an extra camera to Screenflow working simultaneously ?

    Thanks for sharing the video...

  • Hi

I just bought a time capsule & its currently backing up, during set-up I really didnt know which settings to choose.

I have wireless broadband, my iMac is no where near the phone line & wireless router so I cannot connect TC to router (ethernet).

I want to use TC to back up my iMac & to be the primary base station, is the best use?

I have added TC to my existing wireless network (broadband) but I'm really not sure what I'm doing. Please could you help me with the settings? Thanks

  • U da best

  • i have the time capsule now for few moths but my laptop and my sisters laptop cant use the wireless internet but our mac can do you know what the problem is and what i can do about it

  • What camera do you use? p.s. you're video style looks really clear and professional. Hve subscribed

  • Do u need ethernet if you connect it to your wireless network

  • WOW u talk fast :b

  • Great vid Dan - very self explanatory - and easy to follow. Excellent stuff!

  • Thank you so much. I couldn't get that thing running until I followed your excellent video.

  • Great video thank you

    Regards

  • Great Video... What have you used to edit it? It's freakin' awesome...

  • Please try to speak a little bit slower. I understand most of the things you say but for non-native speakers it's a bit hard sometimes.

Anyway, thanks for the tut ;)

  • @benutzer1221 ye sorry i get a lot of people saying that lol :P

I think my newer vids are a bit easier to understand...

  • Dan,

I have Verizon FIOS which has a wireless router that also controls or is part of my FIOS cable tv. So i'm not sure how to combine the two together, as I need the router that came with FIOS to receive Verizon TV stations. Can you suggest how to do this?

  • I have been trying to set up tc fusing a mac book pro. No success at all. I want to join my existing network wirelessly - is this possible? My wireless network requires the MAC address of tc but I don't have a valid MAC address for tc. Followed set up process - all I get is a flashing amber light. Tried via the WAN port. turned wireless off had to set static IP got green light but TC not visible in shared. Time M can't see it either Any help please?

  • hey i cant see the setup nternet like static IP and i need help!! email me jackluo1997@me.com

  • Can I partition Time Capsule for scheduled wireless backups in versions of Windows?

  • at 2:59 I selected, "I want Time Capsule to join my current network". It will not show up in the Airport Utility. I have the ethernet cord from the my router to the WAN port on the TC and it still does not show up!!!! Any Ideas??? Is there a way to get the data off of the TC with a USB to USB cord?

  • @XcodeDev Firstly no, the USB is only used for an external printer or hard drive, and second, make sure your computer is connected to the time capsule not your router through WIFI while you're setting it up. It should come up in the Airport utility then

  • @DanWantsTech Wait, and can I just reset it to the default settings?? How do I do that? Because I think that would solve all of my problems. But does it Erase the data that's on there when you reset it to default settings?

  • @XcodeDev Ye you plug the ethernet into the WAN port. The ethernet ports are just for connecting other computers.

To reset it, open up Airport Utility, click on your TC and click manual setup. Then in the menu bar click Base Station, then "Restore Default Settings", that should do it…

And no it wont erase your data, just the settings.

I'm not sure if you're on a Mac or Windows so tell me if that works.

  • @DanWantsTech oh, my problem is that it won't show up in airport utility. I cannot see my TC no matter what I do. It will not show up anywhere. Do you have any suggestions on what to do?

  • @XcodeDev Then connect the time capsule up to your computer on it's own through an ethernet cable to the WAN port and then it should show up. Reset the settings then and set it up a second time all through the ethernet. Then disconnect it and it should work through WIFI.

  • @DanWantsTech So I have my Mac to the WAN port on the TC and that's it? And how do I reset the settings if it doesn't show up in the Airport Utility? Would a Soft Reset reset the network settings? Does a Hard Reset erase the data on the TC?

  • Great instructions! Thanks! Where did you get that winter wallpaper? It is gorgeous!

  • @vfrl7r Oh i forget now, probably typed winter wallpapers into google or somethin'

  • Dan, does it matter how far your timecapsule is from the dsl modem as long as it is connected via ethernet cable? I'm trying to extend my wifi coverage area @ my house. mbm0957

  • @mbm0957 No it shouldn't matter at all if it's connected with ethernet.

  • i got everyhting the time capsule plug in and when i open airport utility it cant find anything , i used to but not now u know anything about this?

  • its a gud one dan...i loved it n m buying a time capsule very soon...

  • Its the o2 wireless box II. Is turning off the wireless in this set up necessary?

Ideally I wanted to do without the o2 wireless box altogether but was not aware that the time capsule had no modem.

    Thanks.

  • How did you disable the wireless on the router the time capsule is replacing?

  • I just went into the wireless menu on the router and unticked the checkbox "Enable Wireless"

I have an Netopia router though so you probably have a different brand. What brand is it?

  • great video dan, a question which has come up a lot is it possible to connect this to a BT home hub ? what i want to do is have my bt home hub 2.0 down-stairs as my main router. the buy a time capsule to put into my room and join the BT network around my house therefore extending it.

i would really like it if you could reply, Thanks

    Ben

  • Ye sure that's no problem, just select "extend my current wireless network" when you're setting up your Time Capsule.

  • Dan taking your advice im buying a 1TB time capsule connecting to my bt hub turning of the wireless part then using the time capsule as my new router, how's your setup going any problems..thanks for your advice

  • Cool, ye my setup's fine, backup is a bit slow but as i said the new Time Capsule's are supposed to be 50% faster so yours should be pretty fast.

  • Are they meant to be faster even with Ethernet? I know they are meant to be faster wirelessly due to the new Antennas but I'll be connecting to it via Ethernet so will I see a difference

  • That's a good question, i wouldn't think so. It's the wireless performance they advertised to be better not the ethernet. I still think the faster wireless isn't as fast as the ethernet though.

  • hi dan keep the videos coming ,very good , just wondering i have BT Hub 2.0 , if i buy a time capsule can i use it as the main router instead of my bt hub...

  • ye that's exactly what i've done with mine. The best thing to do is when it says "What do you want to do with your Time Capsule" just select "Create a new network" and then disable the wireless on your BT Hub 2.0. Then just plug a LAN cable from your Hub into the WAN port on the TC and that should be fine.

  • Thanks For the video Dan!
