This unit is of European design with the off/on mechanism: In order to turn the player on, the tonearm is pulled the other way, as you see here, until you hear the click and the platter starts to move. Likewise, when the record is completed playing, once the tonearm moves into the runoff grooves, as you again see here, the player automatically shuts off. Many of the new antique music boxes with the turntable are operated in this manner, which was for single play only, not for multiple records.

by the way, It's not Johnny Mathis on this one, it's Lynn Fautheree as "Johnny". Mathis left in '55 and returned in '60.
