The elect are not mentioned in Matthew 24:11. They're not mentioned until 24:22 and in 24:24 it states that many will be deceived by false prophets but that it's not possible for the elect to be tricked by them.

The church has always been adopting culture to give way to popular thought in order to maintain their number of followers. The church actually kept marrying gay couples until that time. This all, of course, is before the protestant revolution, which made things even worse.
