Why this version sounds diferent than the 1979 album recording, i mean the style and tempo on vocals are diferent, frippertronics sound a little different too. Is this like a remaster version?
I remember mixing this with the song Back In New York City from 'Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' (intense) ages ago whilst hosting one of our student radio shows in college.
Best comparison I ever heard: Peter Hammill sings like Robert Fripp plays guitar. Or something like that anyway. It's too bad they didn't do a lot more together, I agree, though I'm not sure one mind could handle all that intensity at once.
Two giants. Hammill and Fripp. Fripp once guested on an early Van der Graaf Generator album -- H to He Who Am the Only One. Should be more by these incredible men. Voice with desperation, anger and emotion -- not an easy thing to pull off. You see, singing is not always about high notes with no apparent reasons.
@DavidKinner YES he did. I had forgotten about that. I saw Hammill at the Bottom Line in NYC years ago & he was intense. I am not sure about now since he suffered a heart attack. Fripp with KC: I saw 3 times -- all with Bill Bruford on drums. As much as I love Bruford, I would have liked to have seen Mike Giles -- I am a drummer, & his playing on that first KC album is monumental. This was all before Phil Collins, Neil Pert & Carl Palmer. They are all excellent.
@lastrada52 I love VDGG I wish they would have gotten more famous. I did not know Peter suffered a heart attack no wonder his last live video I saw he sounded very out of breath. Mike Giles is awesome, but I love Bruford's drumming in Lark's so much.
@DavidKinner Yeah...Larks Tongues In Aspic, Starless & Bible Black, Red -- no one was doing this -- & VDGG's return with Godbluff -- you would experience another intense splash of maniacal music with well thought out arrangements, song structures, lyrical topics, precise instrumentation. Great stuff. The problem? It mutated into bombastic, pompous music with Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, Italy's PFM & Germany's Amon Duul. Great musicians all -- but something was lost. What do you think?
@lastrada52 I don't entirely think that is true. Yes had quite a few good albums still with Drama, and Going For the One, Even Magnificient which is more recent is quite amazing. Gentle Giant was quite an awesome band also. Tangerine Dream, Jethro Tull, Genesis was always amazing until Peter Gabriel's departure. Krafterwek, Zappa, The Moody Blues, Gong, Camel, Soft Machine, Comus. I think those were all great bands, and there were still a lot of others Pink Floyd. Porcupine Tree newer n awesome!
@DavidKinner Not sure you're aware of this: the songs Pete Hammill sang for Fripp on his solo LPS were co-written (lyrics) by Fripp's girlfriend Joanna Walton. Pete Sinfield was not the primary lyricist on these. Anyway, Walton was a victim on the Pan Am 103 air crash. (Lockerbie, Scotland). I didn't know Ms. Walton, but when I heard they freed the man responsible for that air crash it was reason enough for me to be real angry. Your band choices were all excellent David.
@lastrada52 I did not know that that really sucks and is pretty damn ridiculous that he was let out. I do not think all was lost King Crimson's last few albums I have thought to be incredible also. Especially The Power To Believe, it has a lot of parts like Lark's.
@DavidKinner We are giving lots of information -- we should write a condensed book about this music but I don't want to take up space on armandsdamanhoo's post. We seem to be monopolizing the site. Maybe we can pick up the conversation at another King Crimson - Van der Graaf - Hammill post on YouTube. Wish I knew you way back in the late 60's when I discovered these bands. Most of my friends were Allman Bros - Crosby, Stills & Nash fans so they didn't get it. Not even Procol Harum & Strawbs.
@lastrada52 That would have been pretty awesome, but quite impossible seeing as I am 20 lol. A book would be nice people need to know about all this stuff. Ever hear of Captain Beefheart? He is awesome and very underrated also in my opinion. Where to monopolize next?
@DavidKinner -- Fripp started something revolutionary with Crimson & he was one of the few artists who could change styles but always maintain fan interest. "Chicago" is a great song by Hammill & Fripp. Interested people should check Hammill's solo lps too. Let's meet at YouTube's PFM site at "The Mountain" -- you'll see my posts. Blue album cover 8:26. Will start a tour from there for you of other progressives.

I'm a big VDGG fan and love Hammill. I think he's awesome on the few vocals he did on this CD.
