I'm saddened that this train is gone from the US, but yet, am glad that it's in the hands of our Canadian neighbors. After looking at VIA's trains, it looks like the Canadians take pride in their passenger rail equipment.
Looks like I was lucky to ride the ski train to Winter Park and back to Denver when I did...this vid seems to say the train will be in Denver but with different equipment...
The owner of the Denver Ski Train he sold the Ski Train so he could have the money to buy the Grandluxe cars. I shot video of an extreamly rare move when the Grandluxe cars were sent from California to the former owner of the Ski Train in Denver, Colorado.
They were useing Amtrak P42's to take the Grandluxe cars from California to Denver however when the train made it east of Reno, Nevada the P42's burst into flames and they had to use UP power to take the cars from Nevada the rest of the way to Denver.
I have no idea what they will do with the Grandluxe cars in Denver, what engines they will use with them, etc.
This set was the last passanger train in America that wasnt Amtrak, It ran the Rio Grande "California Zephyr" and was in regular service till April 1983
God ill mis the Ski train. it was once my all time favorite train. now i only have pictures to remember this. Thanks for posting this man!! brings back tons of memories..
Weren't these cars originally from Canada? So wouldn't it be fitting to paint them back? I too hate the way CN has been gobbling everything up. I still can't get over seeing CN in Florida with palm trees. It might not be so bad if they had their old green and black scheme.
why does CN own the Rio Grade Ski Train? did it go out of Business? in the mid 1980's that train still had 6 axel Hevy weight cars with an PB Freight unit for use as a steam generator car.
Cool video, but that's really sad to see. Do you know if the real Ski Train will be buying new equiment or if they will be going out of buisness. Thanks,
Love the vid, Geoff! You guys were traveling all over the area up there around Galena and Scales Mound. I think that "unknown location" that you mentioned was on Council Hill, right? Well, anyways, we caught it well and people are excited to see its last American running. Talk soon!
theres a railroad out here in Pittsburgh, PA called the wheeling & lake erie which use ex: D&RGW and Rio Grande power as they're engines.. many are still in rio grande paint, and many still say the " Rio grande " but are in a little bit of an brighter orange color. Thats really it. They even have one still untouched, orginal paint, orginal number patch and i think maybe the only thing not orginal is its horn..
its a railroad that mainly runs from the Cleveland, Columbus area in Ohio, and down to Pittsburgh where it has a mess of trackage, and then some lines down into West Virginia

Alright let me telya something to make this train more amazing UP1989 should be leading that train.
UPHeritage 2 years ago
Thats what I was thinking. Or take off the CN.
LenaVideos 2 years ago
Or a third possible consist that would have been nice would have been an unpacthed Rio Grande unit, with those three F40PH's

Hell yeah.
