Great song! Laura's Soulful energy and passion on this album are a real treat for the senses! Not since the Beatles, have I been so completely captivated by a musical Artist, she is WONDERFUL!!!!

For all the Laura-heads out there: this song also marks the origin of the "Captain" riff, starting around 2:25. It's that little keyboard motif that pops up in altered forms the two "Captain" songs from "New York Tendaberry" and also appears in "The Cat-Song." Any other instances of this riff in her music?

So much has been written about this song. It changes keys, tempo, story lines, musical style, and so many have there favorite parts, alot are at 2:25 (Once it was alright..,) Or how about when she wails" Blackout" right after flames of gold rush my mind!!!, We'll never see the likes, or talent like hers again, Thank God ist's saved. I know I've got it all safely saved, and duplicated, a legacy to pass on to those who care to listen. Seems like our numbers are growing ( Smile)

Love this track, from one of my favourite albums. Reminds me of the music in a Russ Meyer film, same vibe - and I mean that as a compliment! This part at 2:25 is golden, in fact it all is.

It's just Laura having fun....it's about a woman who wants to love this man, but he isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, and is too immature to realize what he has with her, and she realizes she is beautiful, and then she knows she has a real man to love her...she decides to clear out of this hick town....but still loves him....but has to move on....it's really about the music.....hope that helps....

@BlazeThis93 A mite confused. Catchy and soulful at the same time? Yeah and....?A song like 'Bernadette' by the Four Tops is catchy and soulful too. Just like,say, 'Ball Of Confusion' by The Temptations which is supreme in its catchiness/soulfulness also. How about the way the 'Farmer Joe' track seems to turns corners AND STILL makes you want to listen. Laura sounds almost breathless in her energy and invention without the reliance of a conventional chorus.

This is from Eli & the Thirteenth Cofession which is my absolute favorite album! I could listen to it over and over. It's amazing that a 20 year old recorded this, and amazing as well is that she wrote much of the material in her teens. Laura Nyro deserves more recognition these days.
