It's just that people normally forget its powered by workstation grade cpu's intel XEON cpu's all those saying they can build one their own but faster for less will use cheap ass intel i7 cpu's who no one wants in their workstation computers since they don't support ECC memory.
I got my fx eight core amd up to 4.1 gigahertz stable...and that's just a three hundred dollar chip. Macs are overpriced low power computers... Im not hating im just stating facts

Hehe, I looked on Apple's website for configuring these. To increase the clock speed of your dual Xeons from 2.66ghz to 2.93ghz (negligible difference on a 6 core) you need to add $1200 to the price. Also they charge $150 per 2GB stick of their absolutely hideous RAM. Oh and the worst thing is that they charge $99 for a little mini display port to DVi adapter. Those things come FREE with most video cards. The only thing of theirs remotely worth the price is the 30" monitors.
Nice! - Your Mac is fast! (Me on the other hand start the machine and head into the kitchen for coffee .. stir in a little milk...pet the cat...sit down..take another sip.. hm.. almost ready. - lol)
No, actually I make in a week what you make in a month because I clearly have a better grasp of computer how technology works than you ever will. Maybe if you take the APPLE out of your ass, you can actually think more clearly.
@paumni mine too... sad is just the ultimate upgrade for EVERY mac... i got a macbook pro late 2008 (the first unibody model) 2.4 ghz and upgraded with a 120 gig ssd and 8 gig ram. it runs WAY faster den some 2010/2011 models i know...
my dual core pc boots up just as quickly and probably cost 1/8 the price of this mac pro and its got 1gb graphics card can play any game, core i3, 6gb ddr3 ram, and a SSD :D
@ctsincebay Tada, you just answered your own question. That could very well be the reason he has a 12 core Mac Pro. Don't mix other people's needs and requirements with your own and dismiss them if they don't match.
@TalesOfWar Seriously you Apple fan boys have no clue. It's cool though, that's the whole point of the Macs -- pretty boxes with pointless numbers and bloated prices that fit the lifestyle of people who place more value on bragging that they have 12 cores than actual usefulness.
@ctsincebay I find that massively ironic coming from a PC guy, the same people who generally bang on and on about how much more superior PC hardware is to Apple hardware, then you have an about turn when you get to the Mac Pro saying it's of little or not use to have so much power. People use their machines as tools, some people need bigger and better tools than the rest of us, but they're there for those who need them. You can get PC's with this monster hardware too, also rather expensive.
@TalesOfWar Now THAT's hilarious. I'm not surprised that a Mac fan boy wouldn't understand what I said. I'll tell you what -- go read my post 10 times VERY SLOWLY so you can absorb what I said, and then kick yourself in the head for being so stupid. If you never get to the point where you realize what a dumbass comment you just made, let me know and I'll point it out for you.
@ctsincebay My god you really are an ignorant mother fucker. I hope you're not such a douche in reality because I'd hate to have to pay your medical bills.

Mac pros are like the biggest ripoffs, a macbook /pro i can understand, it looks cool and battery lasts long, but a mac pro's looks are useless and you can buy a pc for a fraction of mac's cost.
Btw to all fanboys, I use a macbook pro and a pc so i'm not a hater.
@psp10004 They are considerably more expensive than they should be, but for professional video/photo editing professionals who need the 12 cores & all 24 thread's that 2, 6 core xeon's offer along with the system stability of ecc memory & large amount of Ram upgrade ability that they offer, the Mac Pro would be worth it for them, & not so much as a rip of as you might expect, I'm also not a mac lover, but I do own a macbook pro & a PC that I built myself.
@gerardbiteme For what they are they're well priced. They may seem expensive and "over priced" to most people but that's because they don't have a use for all that power. If you're genuinely in need of such a machine and are making money from what you create with them, then it's a good investment and will pay for itself in very little time.
@ctsincebay Good for him. If it does the job it does the job. But Alienware are genuinely over priced machines. They're nothing but commodity hardware and OS. There really is nothing special about them. At least Macs come with their own OS you can't get (legally) on anybody elses systems. That's a unique selling point and many people choose to pay the premium to experience the marriage of software and hardware made for each other, or simply to avoid using Windows and still have most common apps.
@TalesOfWar Almost but not quite, if you price'd up a similar spec pc build, all be it with standard ram instead of ecc ram, but basically if you priced up case, psu, M/B, ram/cpu/cpu coolers with practically identical spec for a pc that include's two 6 core xeons and 2 x 12Gigs of ram it would come to about £3200, while a 12 core mac pro is near £4000 and the £3200 include's an SSD & HDD 1tb (which is £100) & a GTX 580 video card, so they are a little over priced, but they are good machines
@gerardbiteme Removing ECC RAM from such a build kind of makes it pointless. The whole point of these kind of machines is to have a super stable highly scalable platform, ECC RAM adds to that stability. For what most people use their machine for they won't see the effects of errors, but for what these things are made for, when used for those tasks, you will, so ECC is most certainly an integral part of them (for now, maybe we chipsets/mem controllers improve they wont be needed).
@gerardbiteme Also, a lot of that extra cost goes towards making a profit, paying R&D, warehousing, shipping, admin, staff wages, production lines and so on. All these costs are rolled into the price of products. Compare these things to similar specced PC OEM's workstations like Dell's Precision and HP's Z Series line and you'll see they're very competitively priced. RAM is expensive though, but that's how much it was when they introduced the current models. Apple don't generally price adjust.
@psp10004 Considering you just said a mac pro is a waste of money when you only own a macBOOK pro? I find it difficult to believe your argument is valid at all. I'm not a mac fanboy, I own an iMac and an Asus laptop, but I can't imagine a 32 core pc with similar components to the mac pro being around 4000 dollars.
@ITSbigwillystyle yes macbook pro is overpriced too but i bought it to use xcode, and btw a 32 core intel processor costs around $1500 and a motherboard around the same, other stuff like hdd's are cheap as fuck.
@ITSbigwillystyle The 12 core Mac pro's lowest shitty model with only 6GB of RAM and a slow ass ATI Radeon 5770 costs $5000. Those 12 cores will never get used with that kind of configuration. There's not enough memory to supply data at a rate fast enough to keep the CPUs busy. That 12 core system is basically as fast as a $1000 PC with $4000 of markup for bragging rights and a pretty box. Oh wait, the $1000 PC would probably include a monitor.
@psp10004 You may not be a hater, but you're quite ignorant. These are WORKSTATIONS, they're running with TWO Xeons, with gobs of ECC RAM and are designed to be on 24/7 on full load for months at a time doing a very specific set of tasks. They're NOT a "ripoff", they're very competitively priced for what they are. You could NOT buy or build a PC with the same level of hardware for a "faction" of the cost. You get what you pay for. Go check the Dell Precision and HP Z Series Xeon workstations.
@psp10004 haha i have to agree 10k is a ripoff. I still want one : P haha btw i heard they are going to discontinue the mac pros but they are going to make another beefed up imac
@Itanium153 First of all, latest version of Final Cut is complete and utter SHIT
I use Adobe Premiere C5 and After Effects CS5 which are superior in every way, plus i can edit movies on the go by cloud syncing my computers and letting my pc do all the rendering without spending too much money on a mac pro.
Oh and btw i haven't said anything about windows and microsoft being better, im talking about the hardware. Lion is awesome with its gestures and iphone like app layout.
@Itanium153 Uh Apple doesn't make the hardware and neither does Microsoft. They both have operating system...and software doesn't die or go anywhere? So how does Apple makes products that last unlike windows? that makes no sense.
@psp10004 But the mac pro is the most powerful commercially available computer any where. 12 cores 24 threads 64gigabytes of ram and up to 8 TERABYTES of memory. no windows pc comes anywhere near that kind of power.
@hellfire780 fyi i could fill my desktop computer with over 15 TERABYTES of storage, if i only had the money to buy 5 or more 3TB drives. oh and why do think that this is the most powerful commercially available computer?
@psp10004 The reason the mac pro is so expensive is because there are so many processors. The more you have, the more expensive the computer will be. If the mac pro had a quad core processor, it would most likely be around $1000-$1600.
@psp10004 First of all, the computer is $5,000, and you can upgrade things like SSD and RAM for cheaper than from Apple. Second, this computer is almost two years old. Do you really think it is going to be a top-of-the-line computer? And third, you cannot beat the reliability of a Mac. You can get faster for cheaper, sure, but Macs rarely have problems.
And I'm not a fanboy either. I think the iPad, Cinema Display, and MacBook Air are all useless for the price.
I regret not going SSD in raid when i built my computer, everything is top notch...apart from the hard drives. Maybe SSDs will be affordable by the time i get to my next build, i don't see dumping another $1000 into a machine to get 500GB of SSD awesomeness right now.
@geterdonein01 Get two smaller drives and RAID0 them, and a 2TB HDD or something for storage (or just reuse the HDD's you're using now). Much cheaper and you get the same end result, just less SSD storage.
You're sooooo lucky! I hope you enjoy every second using this mighty 12-core Mac! But I would highly recommend to add OWC 120GB Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, MAN IT SCREAMS!!!
@JooseyJayRemade Not really if you have a SSD it will still boot up quite fast. Plus i ment the difference like from 2.0ghz to 4ghz. There is hardly a boot speed difference.
@unicyclefinatic SSD is much faster to boot, because it does not have to spin up..... you must admit, 16 secs it pretty impressive! mine takes like 1 min!
@youbedo2 Please notice that starting up a Mac Pro is like starting a full loaded trailer, and shifting it's gear up hill to reach certain speed.. and even at 32 GB of ram, ironically, it gets slower to start up.
@MegaMytube99 I've yet to see a person wanting to trade a PC for a Mac Pro. Also Mac Pros come with multiple server processors, I've yet to meet anyone who builds a PC with more than one performance processor.
The odd thing is that my C2D iMac 17" boots up in 15 sec too! I just put a new hard drive and fresh install so that may be the case, but good video. Checkout my iMac bootup if you can at my channel! Great Video!
The odd thing is that my C2D iMac 17" boots up in 15 sec too! I just put a new hard drive and fresh install so that may be the case, but good video. Checkout my iMac bootup if you can at
Yeah I have to say, I spent 2200 on my pc and put in the i7-2600k, with 3 GTX geforce superclocked 470's in SLI, with 8 GB of 1866 mhz of ram, 2 x 1TB hard drives at 7200 64mb cache 6gbs, all overclocked on the Asus Maximus IV mobo. And it would smoke the Mac Pro's closest competitor priced at 4800 dollars.... I just can't justify that....
I laugh at all these mac idiots who buy macs because they're white and have fruit on them. someone who spent 20000 on a mac I can match that hardware for 5000 on a pc. noobs
@plopyer10 Apple makes all of the hardware and software so the computers get the best out of their processors. With PC's, anybody can make hardware and software, therefor causing problems to malfunction a lot of the time.
@ElChicoYElGuapo Yes actually that was true for the longest time, but recently I think last year or the year before, Mac switched over to using INTEL technology. Hence the XEON processors. ATI Radeon is also a different company from mac which is the graphics cards that they are currently using in the systems. So NOW days they're actually just PC's running a MAC OS.
@elderbwoodward That actually happened in 2006 and they are not PCs running OS X, there are many differences. Get your shit straight. You obviously have no idea what your talking about.
@plopyer10 The Mac Pro is cheaper than a system with the same specs from let's say... Dell; just check the prices.
You think you can match the hardware? Sure? This Mac was around 2500$. For each one of the Xeons (it has 2), I think you'd have to pay more than 800$ (1600 total). Then add everything else, including a good 1000W PSU, and a premium class case (not a cheap one with a lot of LED's). Then you'll see how "expensive" they are.
ubuntu 11.04 boots twice as fast from my $400 cheap lenovo thinkpad and SSD :P You just spent $7000 on most stupid and useless and unefficient apple config :P
Yet another PC fanboy that has no idea what he is talking about. EFI is called the next generation bios. Check wikipedia. Mac Pro's are not gaming machines. They are Pro Workstations that allot of people use for production work/CAD and generally CPU intensive tasks like Video encoding. Just so happens that you could put a gaming video card in it. The fact that you called people morons when arguing about the lack of a BIOS proves that you are a complete idiot that speaks without experience.
@TheMrDisser THE FUCKING MAC PRO 12 CORE IS OF DOUBLE INTEL XEON, THIS VERSION MAC PRO IS 2011. THE VERSION 2011 BUY FOR 7800 DOLARS, YOU ARE A FUKING MILLIONAIRE, AND IPHONE YOU HAVE, OMG, FUCK U
10.7 will even faster than 10.6. and its true, 10.6 will boot around 30% faster than 10.5. The new Macbook Pros have Thunderbolt, which is 12X faster than Firewire 800.
why not ssd or snow leopard and new there has been no FW 400 since the 3008 one and new 2010 ones cant run less that 10.6 this i think is running 10.5
Fake. There's a FireWire 400 port in the front. Mac Pros haven't had FW 400 since the 2008 model. And the 2010 models cannot run anything less than 10.6. This is running 10.5.
@MarcBookPro I was going to say exactly the same. This is either a late 2006 or an early 2008. Either way the Mac Pro with an HDD does not boot this fast, at least mine doesn't.
Many cues. The spacing of the icons in the Finder window and the icon size is set smaller, which was the default for Leopard. Snow Leopard and Lion both set the icon size to 64x64 and the grid spacing much closer together.
@honam1021 look..the wallpaper in SL is purple, this one has a green line on the left. also SL has 3 stacks in the dock, apps, docs and downloads...this has only docs and downloads!
@gamerbg123 hm ok. I now see it's booted from a HDD. and that's pretty fast! as fast as my MBP booting from expresscard ssd. always thought it was purely the harddrive that made the difference.
lol what takes the cake in this video is that he's using an iPhone to time it

Oh and i will say this microsoft was the leader in the 1990s.but not any more windows fan boy. Apple makes products that last unlike windows.
Itanium153 1 month ago
@Itanium153 First of all, latest version of Final Cut is complete and utter SHIT
I use Adobe Premiere C5 and After Effects CS5 which are superior in every way, plus i can edit movies on the go by cloud syncing my computers and letting my pc do all the rendering without spending too much money on a mac pro.
Oh and btw i haven't said anything about windows and microsoft being better, im talking about the hardware. Lion is awesome with its gestures and iphone like app layout.
psp10004 1 month ago
@Itanium153 Uh Apple doesn't make the hardware and neither does Microsoft. They both have operating system...and software doesn't die or go anywhere? So how does Apple makes products that last unlike windows? that makes no sense.
AnimeBeef 3 weeks ago
@psp10004 But the mac pro is the most powerful commercially available computer any where. 12 cores 24 threads 64gigabytes of ram and up to 8 TERABYTES of memory. no windows pc comes anywhere near that kind of power.
hellfire780 1 month ago
@hellfire780 fyi i could fill my desktop computer with over 15 TERABYTES of storage, if i only had the money to buy 5 or more 3TB drives. oh and why do think that this is the most powerful commercially available computer?
psp10004 1 month ago
@psp10004 Its looks are useless? If thats the case, paint it pink :L
Gamerchimp 1 month ago
@psp10004 The reason the mac pro is so expensive is because there are so many processors. The more you have, the more expensive the computer will be. If the mac pro had a quad core processor, it would most likely be around $1000-$1600.
MineKraftTK 1 month ago
@psp10004 dont compare a workstation to a laptop lol
icekillez 3 weeks ago 13
@psp10004 First of all, the computer is $5,000, and you can upgrade things like SSD and RAM for cheaper than from Apple. Second, this computer is almost two years old. Do you really think it is going to be a top-of-the-line computer? And third, you cannot beat the reliability of a Mac. You can get faster for cheaper, sure, but Macs rarely have problems.
And I'm not a fanboy either. I think the iPad, Cinema Display, and MacBook Air are all useless for the price.

The new Mac Pro coming out with the new i7 980x w/12 physical cores and 24 logical cores with a top frequency of 3.33GHz.
These processors will be the first dual-socket, six-core processor from Intel.
Rumored or not, it'll be out soon enough,

I regret not going SSD in raid when i built my computer, everything is top notch...apart from the hard drives. Maybe SSDs will be affordable by the time i get to my next build, i don't see dumping another $1000 into a machine to get 500GB of SSD awesomeness right now.
geterdonein01 3 months ago
@geterdonein01 Get two smaller drives and RAID0 them, and a 2TB HDD or something for storage (or just reuse the HDD's you're using now). Much cheaper and you get the same end result, just less SSD storage.

The processing speed of the computer has nothing to do with its boot speed. Its all in the drive. SSD is the fastest.

@unicyclefinatic Try booting a box with a 1mhz cpu... I bet it takes quite a few clock cycles. ;]
JooseyJayRemade 4 months ago
@JooseyJayRemade Not really if you have a SSD it will still boot up quite fast. Plus i ment the difference like from 2.0ghz to 4ghz. There is hardly a boot speed difference.

@unicyclefinatic SSD is much faster to boot, because it does not have to spin up..... you must admit, 16 secs it pretty impressive! mine takes like 1 min!

I laugh at all these mac idiots who buy macs because they're white and have fruit on them. someone who spent 20000 on a mac I can match that hardware for 5000 on a pc. noobs
plopyer10 9 months ago
@plopyer10 Apple makes all of the hardware and software so the computers get the best out of their processors. With PC's, anybody can make hardware and software, therefor causing problems to malfunction a lot of the time.
ElChicoYElGuapo 9 months ago
@ElChicoYElGuapo Yes actually that was true for the longest time, but recently I think last year or the year before, Mac switched over to using INTEL technology. Hence the XEON processors. ATI Radeon is also a different company from mac which is the graphics cards that they are currently using in the systems. So NOW days they're actually just PC's running a MAC OS.
elderbwoodward 9 months ago
@elderbwoodward That actually happened in 2006 and they are not PCs running OS X, there are many differences. Get your shit straight. You obviously have no idea what your talking about.
danielt876 7 months ago
@danielt876 Yep, they're not the same as most PCs since PCs tend to not use server processors and they normally choose above budget level graphics.
hildegain 6 months ago
@plopyer10 The Mac Pro is cheaper than a system with the same specs from let's say... Dell; just check the prices.
You think you can match the hardware? Sure? This Mac was around 2500$. For each one of the Xeons (it has 2), I think you'd have to pay more than 800$ (1600 total). Then add everything else, including a good 1000W PSU, and a premium class case (not a cheap one with a lot of LED's). Then you'll see how "expensive" they are.

Many cues. The spacing of the icons in the Finder window and the icon size is set smaller, which was the default for Leopard. Snow Leopard and Lion both set the icon size to 64x64 and the grid spacing much closer together.
