This really is not a beautiful rendition of this sublime music. Take a leaf out of Dame Kiri's interpretation Ms Fleming, or study your compatriot's divine version, Ms Sills!
What a wonderful soprano voice. Flemings beautiful performance gave me chills, even watching it on youtube. One of the most incredible arias ever written. Composer E.W. Korngold transports me every time with this piece.

In all the praise for Flemings performance, let's not forget to be greatful to composer E.W. Korngold for writing one of the most beautiful arias (actually, its a duet) of the 20th century
She sings this piece like noone else. Period. Look at how she's fighting back the tears. But to me her definite performance of this aria was at the Met's 125th Anniversary celebration. She got as close to the heavens as any singer has ever come before. What a gift this lady is.
Whatever one might think of Fleming's voice and style, and however one might criticize her for singing certain things she has no business singing, I think one must admit she excels in this music. Thanks for posting!
2 I know the song. I heard it often in younger, in better days. It has yet another verse-- Do I know it still? Though sorrow becomes dark, Come to me, my true love. Lean (to me) your pale face Death will not separate us. If you must leave me one day, Believe, there is an afterlife.
Fleming's voice always shine in this kind of music. This is one of the arias that most fit her lush and smooth timbre and expressivity. Her suave and reflexive stage manner also blends perfectly with this melody. What I most admire in her singing is that she sounds in live recordings just as good as she is in her studio recordings. :-)

Renee Fleming is so enchanting to watch and listen to.
I'll keep any other comments to myself.

We can discern from this poetry and music that love is much like an ephemeral fragrant flower. It blooms and dies.

Splendido legato e suono magnifico. D'altra parte è una grande personalità del teatro lirico.

This is a truly divine performance that makes time stand still. I am also a great fan of the wonderful baritone aria performed by Stephan Genz.

Joy, that near to me remains,
Come to me, my true love.
Night sinks into the grove
You are my light and day.
Anxiously beats heart on heart
Hope itself soars heavenward.
How true, a sad song.
The song of true love,
that must die.

Fleming on a journey, and she takes us by the hand!
See the reflection in her eyes?
And the hand on her chest, fold together.
Thats a true musician!
