Mr. Eubanks: What diversity of tone! One minute he's sounding like the ultra smooth Johnny Smith, then the next phrase that single floating humbucker cranks out the sawtooth licks. An amazing custom axe, not to mention Kevin's skill, from slow and thoughtful lyricism to prestissimo passages. Whew! I always admire talents I don't have. I'm just glad somebody's got'em.

Overrated! Always has been. He sloppy when he tries to play fast. He can't sweep and is predictable. There are tons of player that bury him. Listen to Larry Carlton, Tommy Emanuel to name just 2. ubanks isn't in their league.
Seems like technique tops your list of what you look for in a player. I can overlook a certain amount of shortcomings technique-wise in a player, as long as the ideas are there. For me it's about time-feel and the ability to develop ideas
you got to be joking right? Carlton is not in many of the jazz guitarists leagues! He certainly holds his own with the harmonically starved players but is way short of hip. Nice a guy as he is, he was a great sideman (Crusaders, Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell), very weak on his self produced stuff.
I don't think he ever said "bigger and better things." He probably wants to play what he loves...which is what you see in this video. And honestly, I can't blame him. He's an amazing guitarist. He's got money and fame. What's wrong with doing what you love? He wants to play jazz. He couldn't care less about getting bigger.
@kash0812 - Why would he regret it? He has enough money to last him for the rest of his life, i.e. fuck-you-money, and now he can smoke weed all day, headline festivals all over the world and bang 20 year old French jazz groupies.
Great tune! Whatever K.E. does in his career I hope he pushes public awareness of great musicianship. It's hard to see that happening in his current talk-show setting. I hate to say it but his band seems very generic in its choices compared to it's predecessor, Doc Severenson's gang from the Johnny Carson days.
What I like about kevin Edbanks,is he top notch Musician, but he all so,can be light and have good time and laugh, the jay Leno show made a good choice,i feel he helps make the tonight show.I give him 2 thumps up.
Kevin always has something interesting to say- his lines literally speak. His form is incredible, and there's a rigorous logic to his playing. He swings harder than anyone and burns on the blues. This puts him in a entirely different league than most modern players, who are, for the most part, geeks devoid of soul, swing, and melody.
You know what puzzles me is that when you reach the level of Kevin Eubanks or Pat Metheny you definitely have soul in your playing because you've put your whole life and lot & lots of time into learning the craft and art of making music & if that isn't got soul in it then I don't know what does. Everybody feels the music differently & thats what draws me to jazz in the first place is no one sounds exactly alike & thats really cool, because if they did it would get really boring fast!
I'm Sorry i Hit the thumps down by Accident, imeat to give you a thumps up, i like your Coment,I agree with what you said about Jazz it is unique Music form, and no 2 people sound the same
This guy is really awesome. To be honest, this is the first time that I have heard him. I have heard Pat Matheny however, and if this guy is better, like some on here believe, then I am certainly looking forward to hearing some of the stuff that's better.
Man, I wish Kevin had been born 30 years earlier. With the way he plays, he'd be a multi platinum jazz guitarist, as famous as Scofield and Metheny and McCloighlin, without having to be the cheesy sidekick for Leno.
But nobody gives a crap about great talent in jazz anymore. So there he is playing the same theme song every night and interjecting on Leno's stupid jokes.
Yeah, I know man. Hard argument to defeat. Still I don't know if Eubanks has more money than Metheny.
And to be honest, I'd rather have $5 millon and be appreciated for my music like Metheny, than have $20 million and be appreciated for making funny comments as Leno's sidekick. Especially if I had the potential, which Eubanks definitely has.
He does do a concert every night that isn't aired on the show... It's a tough call, but if you're a musician you really just need recognition and acknowledgement of talent to feel validated. Kevin's recorded with Dave Holland and gets pretty big crowds on a weekly basis. Also he plays aroud with Robin too... I'm not sure if I would feel bad about being in that situation. I might, though
I mean, I know the former sax player on letterman. And he says it's the greatest gig. Shoots in the daytime, and then has the whole night, and weekends for doing his own gig in NYC. And makes a truckload of money.
So I guess it's a killing gig for a sideman who'd be a sideman regardless of having that gig. But maybe it wouldn't be as inspiring for people who have a shot at being headliners, like kevin.
Expecially when most of Leno musical guests who are getting grammys suck compared to you
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Metheny is a very good musician. But he can't do what KE does. No way. Anybody watching him play can appreciate his virtuosity. His sidekick gig is almost a sideline.

Smart7751 do you play Guitar? From a Guitarist stand point Kevin and Pat are apples and oranges. And just for the record if you want to hear something more Kevins Speed listen to Pat's album Watercolor; the song River Quay and the Title track ring clear of a rare look into Pat's versatility in Jazz and Smooth Jazz if you will. + Pat's been playing much much longer and is world class. So no your stuff before you make comments like Pat doesn't have a feel for it. Have you even heard of PM
Yessir I do. Yes I have not only heard of PM, I've seen him live, and I've met him backstage. It was some time ago, so admittedly, his versatility may have improved since back then. The Apples and Oranges metaphore is correct.
I saw him live a couple of times and met him at the in VA. He was with Christian McBride. They were GREAT!!! I still want to see Kevin Live I heard he puts on quite a show. I guess were Pat lacks in Soul and when I say that I mean like Booker T and the MG's or James Brown and the JB's he makes up with Technicality and Speed peppered with efficiency. Not only that his knowledge of music and sound is tremendous. He taught at Berkley. Some of your greats received gems under his tutelage
I have a DVD with Pat and Herbie Hancock with Jack Dejonette and it really did him no real justice. Some songs like 9 over Reggae did not have that pop like I would expect from such a stellar group. But on Pat tunes like the Bat and other classics he felt more at home. Anyway nice blogging
Now, this is playing! I wish Kevin and his band would play like this on the Tonight Show. I gotta tell you, that tonight show band is a trainwreck.
