I do believe it was 1991. I remember, I was getting ready to go into middle school. I can still remember to this day, during its original release, how often it would play on the radio. Ahh memories. Who needs a DeLorean when you have YouTube??

  • @dyskorox A song only takes back the memories of a time, not the time itself.

  • We have seen Hal twice and he was off the chart both times. He stayed after the show and met everyone of us. Very nice guy and I took a picture of him with my wife. That's got to be 2 years ago and that is still her screen saver or whatever you call it on her phone. I told him we would come see him every time he comes to Connecticut, but I wonder if he is touring this summer(2011)? Anyone know?

  • As much as I like this version Mick hanlys original version will always be the best

  • Amazing piece of music. Written by an Irishman named Mick Hanly.

  • i once had a friend who said they didnt like hal ketchum or this song, i immediately pee'd in my hand then slapped the shit out of them, unfortunately for them, hal ketchum rose out of the slap mark like pegasus from the gorgon medusa's blood and also slapped the shit our of them, my friend now makes a living as the backwards man, hal's slap turned his head 180 degrees and now his eyes really are in the back of his head. All Praise Hal...or get dealt with!!

  • youtube.com/watch?v=Dx9SlNBBL7U

I think this version is better

  • Comment removed

  • Mary Black's version is way better in my opinion :)

  • @DivaStar86 I value your opinion unless I know better- and in this case, i know better.

  • Who says that men aren't sensitive? Great, tune, great lyrics.

  • How I love this song....whoa....

  • My favorite Hal Ketchum tune for sure. It hits home with everyone. This ranks right up there with The Dance.

  • actually, it's "likelihood".

  • every song seems to hit home when ya loved someone and ya lost them :(

  • @Grace146 aint it the truth

  • Für mich einer der Besten Countrysongs die es gibt

one of the best Countrysongs I´ve ever heard

  • Still a GREAT song after 20 years!

  • I'm not a big country fan, but I gotta say this is a really cool song.

  • I say 5 stars

  • Clam1111...don't be so hard on yourself...it's 2010...things are different now :)

  • By the way, all turned out good.

  • I was 10 and I remember this song, my Mum and my to be step Dad had a fight and we moved back to Boston from Texas...he cheated on her again and we left.

  • The first time I heard this was on the car radio on my way to work. I didn't know who was singing, but I was so taken with it, I called the radio station to ask!

  • @Highland804 I was working in a radio station in Nashville WYCQ when this song first broke, it is a cover of an Irish singer and his version is good too

  • @davidlirwin

The song was written by an Irish guy, his name is Mick Hanly, and he can sing too.

And it reminds me of some great music that you hear in the Blue Ridge Mountains too.

Top class stuff, and I love that song, a song with great words, "Past the point of rescue".

  • @davidlirwin

utube does not allow links in messages so I had to cut the link out of my reply:

this is the link to mick hanly singing: youtube dot com/watch?v=fMh7bp845f4.

  • @Highland804 I was working in a radio station in Nashville WYCQ when this song first broke, it is a cover of an Irish singer and his version is good too

  • @Highland804

I wondered if I too was past the point of rescue after I lost my love to cancer. Song was a very strong emotional outlet for me then

  • I love this song!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great Song... I'm Still trying to get over my EX.. why do they go back to the A-holes..lol

  • This is, indeed a GREAT song for a 2-Step. Also consider George Strait i've come to expect it from you! GOODLY TUNES - BOTH!!

  • Comment removed

  • This is THE, #1, All-Time, BEST two-step song ever recorded. Perfect beat for a smooth dance, and perfect music for losing yourself in. You forget about what your feet are doing and just flow along around the dance floor...

  • Just a quick comment: The lyrics "distractions are amusing" should actually be "distractions I've been using".

  • I'm sorry, but i have just find the lyrics on a site

  • That's alright, most sites have this common misrepresentation of the lyrics ...

  • @volvoflame245 Why did u keep a small l on the LORD FUCKER !!

  • this is the best driving song ever recoreded in history.

  • i wish dave groel did a cover of this

  • To play guitar and sing this song without crying can be a difficult task, but I play, sing, and cry if I must.

  • I am from Boston, fell in love with a guy from Texas that did me and my young son wrong - this is is our theme song. I still love him these many years later. As far as hollywood goes.... it was sadly just a matter of time before they hit Nashville...as i used to call the cleanest, friendliest city in the US,, hope it still is!

  • Those men from Texas! I had a similar experience. He went awol after an intense relationship and pretty much ruined me for a long time

  • @alaskaozzy Did you know this song was written and recorded by Mick Hanley, an Irishman? His original version is also on you tube if you would like to listen.

Nothing to do with Texas whatsoever.

  • Good Country B4 Nashville went Hollywood

  • id like to see someone perform this song on american idol, cause simon hates country!

  • Great song.

  • probably the best song Mick Hanly wrote.

  • awesome

  • incredible songwriter, emotional singer. this whole cd was tremendous.

  • search for Keny Rogers - Cowards of the country

  • LOVE HIM !!!! MY BRo Got me into Country I can't belive he is not like a hugh star he is my favorite.. P.S. I'm known for having a lil class and taste..

  • god you're brilliant.

  • TY! A Male Jackie O

  • powerful

  • This song is sooo cool. And I normally don´t like country at all. Great lyrics.

  • I can't explain it... I just freakin' LOVE this song!!

  • i love this song! omg its a good song for when your heart is broken

  • This song is so BA it is not funny He knows what he is talking aobut

  • i like hal singin tis song i tink hes the best singer of tis song so far.

  • I tend to prefer American's singing country music (for obvious reasons) and Hal does a faithful interpretation of this. I can't and wouldn't fault it - it's very good.

However, stylewise, it is more focused on percussion as the foundation rather than the original's delightfully mischevous guitar. Not a fault, just Hal's interpretation.

Anyone who likes this will also like the original and might even fall for that extra bite of guitar.

  • I miss the actual music video :( lol wish I could watch it again

  • One of the best songs out there.

    Absolutely savage.

  • true, very true.Love those driving guitar licks in it.

  • great song! reminds me of growing up

  • Loooooooov it

    !

  • "good 1"...............

  • Great song Mick Hanly is a genius the original and best But Hal did a good job on it too

  • I have always loved this song....Glad it on here for me to listen to over and over again!

  • Reminds me of living in south Georgia in 1991-96. We used to drive them dirt roads on Saturday nights and drink beer and listen to this stuff all night long. What a great time in life.

  • the norwegian cover "en krasafaren steinbu" is better :)

  • Hal is singing about love, hellbillies is singing about getting lost in the fog in the mountains.. remind me why you think it's better.. Sorry glenn

  • I was in shock when this song came on the radio in the old jeep...at 4:27 this morning.

  • This is better than the norwegian version ;)

  • Great song, i lived 6 years in the US and i fell in love whit contry music.

  • wow.. really brings a tear to your eye..

    such a beautiful song

  • Yes.....80's and 90's ruled country, it's sad to think it all has gone down the drain with today's crap.

  • This is Bings favorite song!!! xoxo

    ;)

  • Hellbillies - Ei Krasafaren Steinbu. Its a much better version!!

  • Are you a dickhead?

I'm Norwegian too, but this, THE ORIGINAL, is much better.

  • Nei, men den norske eier! :P

  • a great song written by irishman mick hanley

  • Back in the day when this song came out I used to leave the reel to reel running, recording off the radio then would transfer the songs I liked to cassette editing out the commercials. I recorded a cassette with only this song playing over and over and over. I still have it. Love the song.

  • Yeah, I love this song. The part "Is no word form you at all the best that you can do"---that is really jarring to me. Guess because we can all relate.

  • Agreed. That's the best line in the song, IMO.

  • AWESOME SONG! So much going on at that time...this song put it to words.

  • I'm beginning to think that the early 90's was a great time for country music. Seems like that was the last great time. I lived in Texas then and worked as a cook in a Waffle House. It was just a great time.

  • Yeah, the '90s were country gold. Actually, there's a lot of good stuff now, but it's never on the radio. The folks who bought out country music want it to lose all trace of Southern Pride and turn it into some sort of weak distraction for middle class white kids in Michigan. But as fast as they bring in a new Australian artist or put out a Kid Rock single, there comes along a Jamey Johnson or another hit song from Toby Keith. This song is the best, though.

  • late 80s and early 90s was the best. Todays country is 100% junk. Long live the legends

  • I couln't have put it any better, this is what youtube is really good for is hearing these classics of my childhood, all of my favorites are classics like this!

  • i love hal ketcum! he is very sexy! his sound is crisp and clear! I would have loved to see him live, but never hear about his concerts!!!

  • The best.

  • yeah his name was mik hanley!

    What a genious

  • i remember this in my alcohol fuel'd days!1994long live HELL KETCHUM! shove me anytime!

  • This song was written and originally covered by an Irishman!!

  • Hal performed at a local fundraiser tonite in my home town. Was awesome! Took my mom and she loved it. This man can really sing and is a dying breed in the country music industry. If you ever have a chance to see him do it.

  • You really have to hear this song live with his band. There's no comparison with the version recorded on CD. The only word to adequately describe it is haunting. It really rocks live. But like many other country artists, their recordings get twanged up so country radio will play them. It's a shame.

  • I saw hal ketchum live this past summer (08) and to tell the truth, i don't think this version does him justice. He is frickin AMAZING live. I am not kidding. this was his first song, he started with the steel guitar, it was awesome. Most 13 year olds, have never heard of him. But I begged my dad to let me go to his show. And the best part is i got to meet him. Me and my sister just went up to him and he shook our hand and talked to us, he is so nice and down to earth, I seriously almost died

  • Did you know Mick Hanley, an Irishman, actually wrote this song? You can listen to his original version on youtube also.

  • Its pretty good. His accent is kind of werid. but it kind of goes with the song. I still think i like hals version better, but he is definetely good.

  • love this song.....reeks of texas.....heard it on the radio awhile back and had to track it down on here

  • Great song. One of his best.

So much better than the crap coming out of Music City(?) these days.

For those of us still 2-steppin, it makes for a great request.

  • He is an exceptional country artist. His best song I know of is "YOU LOVIN ME" and its not popular.

  • I also wouldnt call myself a country music fan but this song is an exception. Great song, soothing voice

  • Amazing song! I am not typically a huge country music fan, but the lyrics are just so perfect, powerful and relatable.

  • my dad sings this song at his gigs, hes an irish musician and this is one of his favorite country songs, i actually love it! :)

  • Probably, IIRC, because its an Irish song?

  • Seriously, thank you for posting! I just heard this song on the radio tonight at work and I almost changed the station. (I'm not a big country fan at all!) But the melody and the vocals were so hauntingly beautiful that I listened to the whole thing and was singing what I could remember for the last 1/2 hour. So now here I am listening to it again. What a great song!

  • No one and I mean no one can hold a candle to this guy, no matter how hard they try. He's just the best there is!!

  • hal ketchum is a phenominal singer needs to come out with new stuff. good song. not like the stupid people that messed up norma jean riley by putting it on japan anime

  • who cares about wut they put the song on?

    btw anime pwns

  • I wish someone could send me this song,,I am not very smart on computers,,but I would like to add it so I can burn it off

  • I love this song <3

  • As haunting a song as I have ever heard. The Irish folk version by Mary Black is as good. Just a deeply unique voice, strong and melodious.

  • What a great song. WOW what a voice. I can really relate to this song

  • The true answer for his voice? ask him and he will tell you its a gift from GOD. His voice is pure, like Roy Orbison and Marty Robbins, there voices were also pure.

  • this is a great song. First heard a cover at a concert at Welshpool (Wales, UK). Have got this as my home page for foxfire now.

  • We saw the show in Ridgefield last week too. FABULOUS! he is a hunk who by the way sounds as fresh and vital as he did 20 years ago. what a PRO. Plus I too, got my picture taken with hal afterwards. Very impressive.

    Penny

  • Fabulous....My cousin is a fabulous at jiving ...I'm not !! Have fallen in love with this mans musik

  • We saw Hal Ketchum at Ridgefield Playhouse in Ct. on Friday, 8-15 and he was great and his voice is as good as ever. He came out to meet us afterwords and was very friendly and sweet. My wife was particularly pleased by the good looks and charisma he possesses. The band was great, also. Just a great night. Aztec Two Step were great, as usual. It's amazing that so much junk is out passing for good country music before huge crowds and Hal Ketchum is playing in front of, what, 500?

  • I always loved this song, but it never got near enough air time!

  • The first time I heard this song, the station playing it didn't say who it was, and I had to call them when I got to work (I was in the car)to find out who it was so I could go out and buy it. I love this song, and Hal.

  • I honestly believe that this is the most beautiful country song ever created.

    Thanks.

  • I love this man's voice
