Here's what I never understood: that lady is apparently choking on her blood, nobody bothering to help, and mister cameraman just wants to film instead of assist. Ridiculous.
The title Name That Siren, the first 3 electronic sirens out in the early and mid '60's were made by GE, Motorola and of course Federal Sign and Signal.
@SpecialFX99 Drove them Old Cadillacs, Oldmobiles and Ponticas. Ford made cheaper versions.
They had 460-472-500 cu inch engines. They were fast and rode smooth. Just back in the 40's and 50's they had no or little EMS Training, and the Tow Truck Drivers did alot of the extrication, simply because they had the tools and got there before the FD.
Yeah these were the days... The days before 3 point seat belts, crumple zones, rollover crash tests, pole crash tests, frontal offset and whole width tests and before traction control, stabilty control and front/side + knee airbags were all standard. Nowadays you will be able to walk away from 40-50 mph head on crashes in just about every car since crash tests began in the mid 90s...
Gosh, I went through Basic Emergency Care class two years ago and it's really irking to watch the lack of neck stability! D:
Oh, and not to mention how gruesome it is. Not sure what type of siren it is- I'm trying to get into cars a bit though- looking to buy my first one sometime in coming months. :) Maybe I'll work my way up to restoring someday! Any tips for a Newcomer?
Oh, and I think Signal 30's in public domain now- Mechanized Death will be in 2011, right? Hope I can download it then!
@steff2001 The people who filmed it said the same thing in the doc. "Hell's Highway" made about these movies. One of the police advisors said that they probably caused quite a bit of damage to the people they were trying to help.
@idigghx it took a little time. there were tons of stories and articles on improving emergency care back in the Sixties but they didn't affect undertakers (who ran many ambulances) until the early Seventies. That's when states had to fix their ambulance services or lose Federal funds. Thankfully a few cities took advantage of innovations and research into patient care early on. The EMT curriculum premiered in 1971.
@wkat950 Aware. I'm a historian, I have all the texts, all the reports, and most of the big name equipment for ambulances from the 40's through the 70's. Just don't have any ambulances. I could probably have this scene reenacted with properly dressed folks.
@idigghx Good man! Just put in a good word for Deke Farrington :). BTW get hold of an old ambulance and fix it up. It'll become a part of your life in a big way, like restoring any old vehicle. Some podunk towns have old '73-77 modulars around rusting away in back lots. Or if nothing else write a book . This history will help younger EMS people become more motivated.
This is true! I remember seeing this back in 1985 in my HS Drivers' Ed class. This was tame compared other flicks, I've seen worse. All of them were made in Ohio in the 60's.
This isn't fake. The producers at the Highway Safety Foundation may have dubbed in sounds for some of the film when it was produced in 1968-9. But they had crews who would precede the slow ambulance response and shoot footage of the dead and injured. There is a video about the production of these driver safety films.
Sorry, but I saw this one in High School in the 1970s. These films were made in abundance years before Tom Savini, Rick Baker, or Greg Nicotero had yet to master their skills as the kings of gore. Well, Tom Savini was actually in Viet Nam filming similar sights as a battle photog.

So glad cars have been made safer! Sure these things can still happen but they are less likely to be as significant.
Still, it shows what retarded driving can do.

That's a signal 30 car new cars have more safety features in them. look how rough they treat the patient on that streacher.

They moved the guy with the back pain wrong. Early movies but they could have paralyzed him.

Yeah, people can't act that well. It's real. Given the establishment of EMS, in 1966, and this taking place in 1969.. Major fail on patient care.
