this song is not about young he was singing about his daughter no confusion just listen to the lyrics it is the romantic melody of the music that (deceives) seduces the ear into believing it is about love of the romantic kind
if you watch -clair the sweetest "clair video ever -and read the comments clair mills herself comments and is shocked by the negative reaction to the song
clare mills was gilbert o sullivans managers- gordon mills-daughter and he used to baby sit her when she was little and gilberts real name is raymond o sullivan and she use to call him uncle ray hope that clears it up
A lot of people felt that the "will you marry me uncle ray?" part was weird, but really if you think about it, when kids are young, and dont understand the meaning of marriage and sex and all that, it is really innocent, and the moment just touched Gilbert, so he put it in the song. Beautiful, innocent song, always a joy to hear
What scares me most is the thought that everaybody that thinks this innocent song is about child abuse, actually do think about child abuse all the time...
This is a beautiful song and it is a crying shame how some people will have their minds in the gutter and try to make Mr. O'Sullivan into a pedophile.. Shame on them! I do have a correction to make in the lyrics though....The correct ones are, "You can be murder at this hour of the day but in the morning this hour will seem a lifetime away"

Useless information for you but it is Uncle Ray because The "Uncle Ray" mentioned in the song is O'Sullivan himself, a reference to his real name of Raymond O'Sullivan.
@KOMET2006 Me too! The lyrics didn't matter to me. Imagine! it was only upon opening this page that i got to read about the story behind this song. It was actually the melody that i loved so much. Chicken soup for the soul!! This is one song that could brighten an unhappy stressful day. Could be because of the childhood memories that reminded us how light and carefree life has been. But it's also a reminder that life can never be the same again!!!
@JerFhilm You want to appear so moral by pointing out the pedophilyish (who cares if 'pedophilyish' isn't a word) sounding lyrics in this song, but then, you do it by blaspheming God's name. And that's not even considering your profanity and anger.

Just read the goddamn lyrics you willfully blind fools! He's describing feelings that go far beyond innocent affection, and it's fucking HILARIOUS that it was put out like this!
i've got seven nieces - l love them all...especially when they were babies...i used to feed them with bottles and read to them....what's pervy about that?
Definitely "Uncle Ray", and of course he's babysitting a young girl towards the end of the song. I didn't realize it was the manager's kid, tho... :-)
I have held and loved my children, but, one of the most wonderful things happened when I was holding my girlfriend's grandson in my lap,and he fell asleep after looking in my eyes.
When such child says "I want to marry you," you have to understand the psyche of a child that it's not the same as a mature older kids or adults. They actually meant that they want to marry someone like the person they are somewhat telling it to, be that of someone related or not. That it's the way they understand what love is about as they pattern it to their parents expression of love for each other. The song's like essays/poetries that set up the emotion and reveals the intention at the end.
Gilbert O'Sullivan's real name is not Gilbert. It is RAYMOND - Raymond Edward O'Sullivan. And if he was the babysitter, and his manager's daughter called him "Uncle Ray", then so what? I know people who bestow that honor on close friends. Besides, there is no lyric that says "Uncle Ray" was ever alone with her. Finally, his "falling out" was the outcome of a lawsuit over his recording contract; which he won. I think you should correct the video or delete it. (He can sue you, too!)
@rturriVideo Great post! You are correct, this was a simple platonic love song written as one would write a song to their own child. Raymond O'Sullivan aka Gilbert O'Sullivan & Uncle Ray wrote this for Gordon Mills daughter Clair. many little ones have "proposed" to their parents as an expression of love and affection. it's sad that something tender can be twisted and warped... or maybe it's the people who misinterpret are the twisted and warped ones...

Hey - little did I know that when I entered my first year of college, my husband-to-be was entering 2nd grade! Souls can love each other no matter WHAT the age difference! 25 years of happy marriage later, we're living proof of such!
@DeadGhostification1 There is an 8 year difference in age between my husband and myself. Due to the fact that I entered Kindergarten at age 4, plus the fact that I "skipped" 2 grades - (they used to do this in the "old days" if you were way ahead of your class intellectually), so I went into my first year of college at age 16, while, eight years younger, (age 8) my husband was entering second grade. I am now 57, and hubby is 49. TRUE.
He's having fun with song conventions and listener expectations. He uses the form of a romantic love song, and delays revealing the true nature of the relationship for comedic effect – like a punch line. Romantic references represent the innocence of a child’s conception of love setting an unmistakably playful context for the lyrical response given from the adult point of view.
Censoring this is to pander to the dumbest listeners. Then what’s next? Instead they need to learn how to think.
worship999, there's no controversy regarding this song. we all know what it's about; it's not about what you're presenting as some perverted older man's desire for a child. it is what it is - an uncle singing about babysitting his young niece.
OMG! It just dawned on me what this song is! Uncle Ray is singing about his niece that he is babysitting and he loves her dearly. Didn't you read the words?! Didn't you every have a child tell you something extreme, like When I grow up, will you marry me? She doesn't understand that she can't marry her uncle. It's sweet.
I agree with worship999 in that this song does capture the real and pure essence of love apart from the lyrics of the young girl. When this 1st came out in 72, the music did not grab me while in most of its radio rotation so I did not listen to the lyrics much and just figured it was a love song. But the music grew on me toward the end without the real sense of the lyrics. But when I got the album around 76, then I got it. Its still good and pure, showing the innocents and decency of the time.
Wrong type of love, worship999. This song is about a very innocent love between a baby-sitter and his niece. GreenerHill is absolutely right about the "marry" theme being humorous. Of course the love is true, but it's not "young love". Trouble is, the English language doesn't have separate words for all the various types of love. And there's nothing Japanese about this song; Gilbert O'Sullivan originates from Ireland.
I wish worship999 (or should it be 666?) would pull the misleading "liner note" about "young love". Read a little bit. Know what you're talking about before making insinuations. Sad.
Where did they find this girl? She's precious. A mix of asian and white. She's absolutely gorgeous. How bout that? A beautiful song and a beautiful woman.
I will never get tired of this song. I can't say that about too many songs.
thanks greener! it's so innocent; the love of a baby. the japanese images of a pubescent schoolgirl is so inappropritate for this song that it makes me vomit.
@tearmann i totally agree. this song is about innocence; not some crazy japanese male desire for young school girls. and trust me on this, after living 3 years in japan, japanese men are so into pre-pubescent females. if the japanese laws were in-synch with most of the world, 20% of men over 30 years old would be doing time!
Young love? It's not about that at all. It's about temporary parental-style love from a babysitter! How could these lyrics be misinterpreted? The bit about wanting to marry Uncle Ray is humorous. Ian Hunter wrote a song with a similar theme, Lisa Likes Rock'n'Roll, for Mick Ronson's daughter. It's beyond harmless.
It such a shame that Gilbert/Harry had the his prime at the same time that Stevey Wonder was having his and the world was holding it's breath for the Beatles to re-unite. If Gilbert/Harry had a stronger response from the public in the early 70's (In spite of Alone Again) his "response" may of been much more prolific.
i remember hearing this song for the first time in a taxi while on holiday in Mexico City when i was 10 years old. I fell in love it. I believe Claire is the daughter of Gilbert O'Sullivan's manager? Anyway he was her babysitter or something like that and he just fell in love with her in the most innocent of ways.
I hear this song and picture a proud uncle who adores his little niece. It always touched my heart when my own niece, at 4 years old, said she wanted to marry me when she grew up. For you to turn that sweet sentiment into something perverse and disgusting is just sad and, like I said before, it says a lot about you.
At the end they printed the wrong lyrics. It's "you can be murder at this hour of the day, but in the morning this hour will seem a lifetime away
Do you think of your niece as more than a child (not caring what others say) and cry in spite of your age difference? Would you want your brother babysitting your kid if he wrote a song like this about her? Come on now...
I figure that Gilbert *couldn't* have meant it that way, so that's why I still listen. It's a very sweet, catchy tune!
Yes, I DO think of her as more than a child. When other people see her, she is just another cute kid to them; to me she is much more than that; she owns a piece of my heart.
Do I cry despite our age difference? All he means is that he feels a bit silly and humbled that a little child has that much control over him and his emotions.
If he were my brother, would I want him babysitting my little girl? Sounds like I couldn't ask for a better person. He loves her as much as her father does.
@lcozzarelli Your the one that's sick in the head with a twiste d perverted mind... that's what's wrong with the world today ....everything's twisted to read as filth...there's no innocence left .....really sad
@muggiemoss You can say what you want about me, as well as blame me for all that is wrong with the world, but you'd be wrong. I am merely aware of what can happen to a child if a parent is not vigilant. I already stated that I like the song--and I don't think he meant it that way--but the lyrics do sound a tad suspicious. If you think that kind of stuff doesn't go on in this world, then you are mistaken. Unfortunately, it's usually the children of innocent-minded, unsuspecting parents.
@lcozzarelli I see what you're saying and I am not niave as to what can happen.....but why oh why must we let these perverts sully everything. I am an old lady now & I and a couple of my friends tried to talk to a little girl in the village the other day and she gave us a suspicious look , turned and ran away....this is what it's coming to....very sad
@lcozzarelli Pedophilia. Totally innocent. Jeepers can't someone have parental feelings for his niece. Song is nothing about that ? Can't anyone have sympathy or care for a little kid? You sound like all men are perverts and monsters.
this song is not about young he was singing about his daughter no confusion just listen to the lyrics it is the romantic melody of the music that (deceives) seduces the ear into believing it is about love of the romantic kind

@thebeast2407 Agreed. People are always looking to go pervy. It's about loving a child you're babysitting for. End o story.

The sweetest song about pedophilia that I've ever heard...

That says a lot about you. :(
I hear this song and picture a proud uncle who adores his little niece.

And the fact that you are getting on your high-horse soapbox about this says a lot about you :(
It even says in the video description that the lyrics were controversial. Here are the lyrics that I and others found a bit questionable:
I don't care what people say,
To me you're more than a child
But why / in spite of our age difference do I cry
Each time I leave you I feel I could die

@lcozzarelli Your the one that's sick in the head with a twiste d perverted mind... that's what's wrong with the world today ....everything's twisted to read as filth...there's no innocence left .....really sad
muggiemoss 1 year ago 4
