nice trick but isn't it kind of obvious? i mean, that's how you set a table every day twice a day, by now people should know where the cutlery goes, or do they live off porridge that only requires a spoon ò_ô???
Tough one. My husband is left handed and we have to be careful to sit on the correct side so we don't bump elbows too!
My best advice is to learn to drink with your right hand if you are at a fancy dinner party. That way, you won't be competing for table space with your neighbor. If you are at your own home do what you want. It's your prerogative :-)
allstuffchannel3160 , you are so kind. I appreciate the 5 star rate! I hope you were able to watch my other two videos on "setting the table for a dinner party" and "how to plan a dinner party" when you do, you'll discover, I don't cook. LOL
Sad but true!
Check them out when you get a chance. Admittedly, I don't offer cooking classes but you'll get some more great decorating ideas!
I hope this helps you . . . and your friends to remember which side the utensils go on. Is it all that important? Not really in the scheme of things. But, if you are entertaining, having guests for dinner, it is nice to feel confident you know the "proper" way to do it!
You are exactly right except for the wtf part . . I usually wash my kids mouth out with soap when they say that :-)You are right that just remembering the placement is easier but you would be surprised how many people actually don't know that. This little trick is intended for people who no matter what just can't remember. It works for them. For you, you are good to go.. . . except for your swearing issue . . LOL
Thanks for commenting, and for the most part, I'm just kidding you :-)
Loved this simple video. Should have taught this to my daughter using these hints 10 years ago! Opps. Where do the chopsticks go? 10 letters = "NEXTTOFORK "?
why is their a need to place them in a specific order? Will people know that the silverware is misplaced if not put in that order thus offending them?
idusclothing, Kids your age will likely not be "offended" . . . . but some might know the right way, if they were raised by a mom like me :-) Honestly, I have been amazed by the lack of manners and social graces I have seen in my kids friends. Talking with a mouth full of food, burping in public, farting etc. If thats o.k. with you then I wouldn't bother learning which side of the plate your utensils go on. if you think you might go somewhere in life it could be important in the future.
hi, i just saw ur videos, they were amazing my god easy to remember, even though they r simple to do but most of the people dont know can u plz post some more of these videos. thanx a lot 4 all ur videos
My purpose was to help people get it once for all!! I'm always shocked how many people don't actually know these basics. I figured a simple easy way to remember just the fork knife and spoon was a good place to start. As for more videos. . . I have 2 more in this series just waiting to be uploaded. I'm thinking I might just do that this week.
If you subscribe to my channel, you will be notified when they are up and running.
It is easy isn't it. Thank you Rightnetworker for watching . . . . more importantly, for commenting. I figure one out of a hundred actually takes the time to post a comment...... So, I appreciate your time and validation. keep checking back, i will be uploading additional videos soon. You will probable like part 2 of this series where I show you how to set a fabulous looking table. One thats impressive to your guests but not over the top fancy!
Thank you aggravated 2007 for your helpful suggestion.
I agree there are many more pieces to this puzzle on how to properly set a table. In fact, I have filmed additional footage on setting a table for more elaborate occasions. My purpose with this video was to cover the bare-bone essentials. It is amazing to me how many people are confused with the basics and I felt this was a good place to start. Please check back periodically as this series is just beginning.
I have to send this to a couple of friends! I did know all this, but then I'm almost 70 years old...but a few ladies I know don't know all this...and it is so easily presented to remember! Thanks.
You have made setting the table for a formal event so easy for me. I am starting to host more parties at my house and i have now learned the easiest way to remember what side the fork goes o and what side the spoon and knife go on. I have passed this trick onto my whole family. Thank you Rebecca.
I like this concept but it breaks down pretty soon after that. For example, bread plate has 5 letters each but I think it goes on the left which has 4 letters. What then?
Anyway, It does work out for the basics and thats probably what you were going for.
You are exactly right in your assessment. That's what makes it so Brilliant! The point is to remember the BASIC table setting.
nothing more nothing less. few people formally entertain in their homes these days. for them, I have another YT video planned which covers a formal place setting as well as some helpful decorating tips for a beautiful table, one that is sure to impress your guests! For now, it's just basics!

That was an excellent and simple to do vid... Thank you sooooo much!!!

I never have a problem with the fork part b/c I'm left-handed, so I like having it on the left side.
But I prefer the knife on the left, b/c that's where it's going to end up anyway when I use my left hand to cut meat with it.
I'm guessing a traditional table setting was created with right-handed people in mind.
vickiormindyb 2 years ago
You might just be right about that vickiormindyb,
I hadn't thought about it from a left hand perspective.
There tips are according to Standard American Etiquette.
Thanks for your input.
I appreciate it!

I was in the Navy and served my "mess" duty in the Ward Room (officers' dining room). So I had to learn most of this during that time. Great tips.

gisellefan1 2 years ago 4
Well now, that is a problem isn't it! LOL
Bottom line, the rule ends at the basics . . .
I suppose if you are from an Asian culture chopsticks are the basics in which case I would need to know for myself where they go.
Question, culturally, is there a proper side of the plate for chopsticks? Can they go down the middle of the plate??
That would make it easy :-) probably not proper however :-)
Thanks for asking gisellefan1
