Ha, ha, ha, ha......I'm tickled by the lyric line:...."You have me by the balls"...on the first song of the album: "Finger on the trigger"....what a funny line!....I didn't know John Wetton was a comedian!...great song too!...and all the rest of the songs!...BRILLIANT ALBUM!!!....ROCK AT IT'S FINEST!!!!
As a huge prog fan, I have to say that I love every musician of Asia, but for some reason I always found this band sounding like any shitty 80s band of pure cheap pop. There is no a real connection between this crap and Close To The Edge of Yes, or Karn Evil 9 of ELP, or Starless of King Crimson. Sorry to sound a bit agressive, but I'm trying to be honest, I'm angry, how these wonderful musicians can produce a "product" instead to be themselves and play the fabulous music the love... Just money?
@gwxk You're wrong, I can deal that it's not 1972 perfectly well, fortunately things has progressed. I use to listen tons of music of all time, in fact, for me, good music has no time at all. Even I'm open to other genres different than prog-rock. Having said that I confirm that _for me_ Asia music is pure shit, it has no soul, it has no feeling, but only catchy tunes with predictable chorus, nothing special but same crap done by thousands of musicians.
@gwxk Sure, I do that a lot, thanks for the advice... As a reflexion to interact with Asia fans I realize that Asia music makes people rude and intolerant. I just expressed my opinion without the need to insult people, but as I always say, music makes a person, and clearly Asia makes stupid dumb assholes like you. Do me a favor, go and fuck your mother, you pelotudo de mierda! (sorry, but you didn't give me another option). Have a good day!
@Ken5244 Hehe Read once again, I said without insult people , I never mentioned anything regarding not to insult Asia music or gwxk (in this last case he doesn't reach that category). See, now seriously, I cannot hide I don't like Asia music, it is just dissapointing considering the quality of musicians involved in the project, but actually I got nothing against you guys, I'm sorry, I'm regretted to have been so rude with you. It should have been directed only to that kinda superior guy. Peace!
Well, both Asia and that "superior guy" as you put it are all "people," aren't they?
You're entitled to your opinion, but I would submit that you're listening superficially to their music. Progressive rock isn't generally known for having "soul" -- it's more known for intellectual lyrics and technically advanced musicianship. That said, there's plenty of "soul" in songs like "Without You" and "Wildest Dreams" IMHO.
Re "disappointing considering the quality of musicians," I know where you're coming from. What I can tell you is that when the first album was released, Carl Palmer discussed this subject in a radio interview. He said that after 10 years of doing long, complicated songs, they were all really tired of it so they decided to take the key elements of progressive music & condense them down into shorter songs, with great melodies but less emphasis on big concepts & complex musicianship.
My enthusiasm for Asia is confined to their first 2 albums. I lost interest after that and can't speak to subsequent albums 'cuz I haven't heard them. I loved the first album -- there's plenty of great melodies, cool song structures, intelligent lyrics and very good (albeit not extended) musicianship. And Howe's great licks, clever fills, great tone & unique playing are still there.
THANK THE GODS FOR ALL GOOD MUSICIANS , MY BLESSING ARE FOR ALL OF YOU MAY THE GODS KEEP YOU IN GOOD HEALT, FOR YOUR GOOD WORK IN THIS EARTH
GRACIAS A LOS DIOSES POR ESTOSGRANDIOSOS MUSICOS , MIS BENDICIONES A TODOS USTEDES,Y QUE LOS DIOSES LOS MANTENGA SANOS, POR SU BUEN TRABAJO EN ESTA TIERRA
Still loving the new album. It achieved the no. 1 spot at Cd Universe! Asia's first album (re-issued) has also hit no. 1 on the New Releases chart! Well done guys!
Yikes! What's wrong with these cats? The songs are trying to sound to hard like the 80's stuff. You can still call yourself "Asia" and through some balls in there. I love all four of these guys but.....
Having listened to "Omega" several times since I got it on May 7th, it just gets better and better. It just may be superior to "Phoenix" overall. I guess I would rank the Wetton-era Asia albums thusly:
1. Asia
2. Alpha
3. Omega
4. Phoenix
5. Astra (a distant 5th, btw)
With time, "Omega" may even equal or surpass "Alpha", stay tuned!
great album.... the producer of my band does merchandising for Asia so i get the chance to hang around with them, they are nice guys....i got the latest material all signed, check my facebook. Take care and Rock on ASIA - rafael piamolini.
Stumptown yeah it has the vintage Asia multi-vocal chorus. "Holy War" kool song too. 1 thing, though, I don't like about the album .. why is about every song in C ? ... I mean go down to B, for a track (what they'll prbly tune down to live, anyway) .. that would've been fine. Cover-wise I like the tiger thing
Got my copy of "Omega" yesterday! Had a chance to listen through only once so far but am enjoying it. Definitely different from "Phoenix"in some interesting ways. Good stuff! Thanks John, Geoff, Carl and Steve for continuing to put out such high quality music.
I'm not fond of the overall sound of those songs compared to the amazing sound of previous albums, a bit too "messy" BUT I guess it will be better when I have it on CD.
Worst album art I've every seen, period! Looks like bad "fan art". Oh well, if the music is good that should be all that matters I suppose. But jesus, how about a hi-res font at least?
I concur. I'm as big an Asia fan as there is but I gotta agree that "Omega" just might have the worst cover "art" of any Asia album. Hard to believe that Roger Dean was responsible for it. And I though the "Phoenix" album cover was weak!
Just downloaded the free mp3 of "Finger on the Trigger" via the weblink. LOVE the song! Has a very 'early Asia' sound to it, which I have always preferred. I'm also glad to hear Steve Howe's guitar playing prominently featured. I have a feeling we may have something here that's even better than the excellent "Phoenix". May 4th can't some soon enough!
Yeah... Finger on the Trigger is a re-recording. The rest of the songs are brand new though, from what I've heard. I don't mind. There's actually quite a few songs that Wetton/Downes did on other projects that would ROCK re-recorded with Asia. They'd get more exposure too, most people don't know Wetton's solo stuff or the Icon stuff with Downes. "The Die is Cast" from Icon 2 would also be sweet re-recorded with Asia. "Rubicon" could be a new Rock and Roll Dream. But... new music is best :)
You are correct. "Finger on the Trigger" was track two on "Icon II: Rubicon", the 2006 album release from the collaborative creative effort of John Wetton and Geoffrey Downes.
This song has been distinctively re-recorded by the original ASIA.
Yes - although Johns vocals are similar, there is a much rockier feel to it!
For anyone who hasn't discovered the excellent iCon - I can thoroughly recommend all 4 albums (3 Studio + a live recording) and the limited edition urban psalm also
Woo hoo! These song samples sound excellent. Very promising! Amazing that the guys reunited and in two short years have managed to give us TWO complete albums of all-new material! Great music from a great band. Looking forward to May 4th.

Prior to that you said, about Asia, " ... I always found this band sounding like any shitty 80s band of pure cheap pop."

"For you" = the operative phrase there.
