Wait...is that Pat Mastelletto playing drums? He played with Mr Mister back in the 80's, and with King Crimson from 1995-2005 or so.
As for Quine's guitar being drowned out, I think it's partially because of the low volume level here. I've got my volume control maxed out. If the actual output level was higher, you'd be able to hear him better. Also, I think the show's sound guy probably had Quine potted down in the mix, as they say. Probably not used to mixing rock music.
Robert Quine. R.I.P. that studio solo on "Girlfriend" is a one of the best ever. Perfectly timed and matched to the song. I cannot tell from the video if it was intentional but his leads are drowned out by the wall of rhythm from the other guitars. I heard there was some tensions between he and Sweet. With Reed as well.
@ChicagoZini Yeah. Quine felt he got mixed off of the 2nd Sweet album and that he told Sweet he would never work with him again...although I think he softened that stance a little later.
There's a great interview of Quine by Jason Gross that'll explain the Sweet/Reed conflicts. It's still on the web and a Google search will turn it up easily.
@markjsound Dennis has always been the same, even Al Franken will tell you that. If you used to like him, you've probably become the closed minded d-bag.
I saw the tour Matthew Sweet did in support of Girlfriend. Sadly Quine was not the guitarist when I saw him in Chicago at the Vic. The guitarist was the OTHER guitarist from the Voidoids, Ivan Julian. I never saw Quine. Saw Lou Reed immediately after his final break with Quine. So I just missed him a couple of times. I did see Richard Lloyd twice with Television. Sadly his string broke during the final encore of "Marquee Moon" w/o a backup guitar. Verlaine played solo. Odd ending.
wow robert quine was an amazing lead guitarist. he looks like Dan Castelzeta or whatever his name is. the guy who does the voice of Homer! but on the real robert was always burnin it up on leads.
Robert Quine !! Legend !! He was a terrifically edgy and talented guitarist. His frantic style really made the voidoid sound and he's added plenty of snazz to other name acts's studio sounds.
This is what playing live is all about, not only delivering a blistering live version of a great song, but also some nice improvisation... :-) great line-up too btw, as others already mentioned here earlier.. :-)
I finally get to see Quine tear it up. Totally cool, unique sound. This era of Matthew Sweet was definitely the pinnacle (100% Fun was cool too). Hey, does anyone know if that's Pat Mastelloto on drums?
@YaaashMichaelScott -- too bad that they can't cut Dennis Miller out of this clip. Quine was indeed, a monster! I saw him with Lou Reed in 1984 and be absolutely blew me away.
Thank the gods for posting this...Quine kills. Find the Letterman clip of this song. Quine was turned up about 50% more. Huge loss. He influenced Eno's ambient stuff too.
@dancer12438 It was up for a while (c. 2008) then got taken down. I keep hoping to see it again. Not that this isn't a great clip, but Quine was on fire for the Letterman performance.
Awesome! Sara Lee on bass, and the late great Robert Quine tearing it up on the guitar. The guitar work by Quine (and Richard Lloyd) on both the albums "Girlfriend," and "Altered Beast" were the perfect compliment to Sweet's songs during this period. Quine, a self-admitted curmudgeon by nature, and perhaps the most unassuming looking guitar god of his generation, produced a unique sound almost akin to a whipping steel cable that was as soulful as it was powerful. He's missed.
That appears to be Pat Mastelotto (XTC, King Crimson, Mr. Mister, David Sylvian) on drums.

Now, I don't want to go off in a tangent but, wasn't Dennis Miller one of the greatest??? until he meet Al Micheals?

Nobody rocked a sport coat & sunglasses harder than Robert Quine.

didn't know all that! I had always thought Sweet did his guitar leads on the songs. Sorry to hear Quine died- he was a definite master.

@fggrimes totally agree however the sound people should have turned Robert's guitar up a whole lot louder.
