If there is one thing I like about Malmsteen is that unlike every other guitarist I know of (besides classical guitar players), he doesn't rely AT ALL (or at least, very little) on the pentatonic scales, and relies more on harmonic minor. Yes, he overdoes it, but how is the pentatonic NOT overused??

Well based on what I have read about Yngwie for the last years or so he use a unique hybrid,

.008 .011 .16 .026 .036 .046 sort of a variation on the regular string set but with a .008 for the high E, and I believe that is because he uses standard strats w/ 21 frets, so a lighter high E gives him the ability to bend way up there
