Going against the crowd... Precious > The Hurt Locker. The acting in the film is enough to blow all the films away (it was the best film of 2009 in terms of acting at least, you can NOT deny that). The film was probably third or fourth (behind Avatar and The Hurt Locker) to win Best Picture anyway.
@pauliewalnuts100 Mo'Nique's character gave a more fleshed out, realistic and developed performance, in my opinion. Not denying Waltz wasn't excellent though. But the rest of the cast in Ingorious Basterds just didn't hold up. They were fine, but nothing special (especially Pitt..)
The movie is not that bad i guess...but i didn't also like the Avatar that much,so i think Inglorious Basterds should have won it's an awesome movie and Tarantino is a genius!
Inglorious Basterds, Avatar, District 9, Up in the Air, Up, and (dare I say it) the Blind Side were all better than the Hurt Locker. There was not one great quality in the movie...emotional detatchment from the characters, no story, poor pacing, no sense of direction...just a dull movie. And people can accept a woman for Best Director. They just want a woman to win because she deserves it and I dont think Bigelow does.
People hate this because they want to see a big Hollywood movie win. They can't appreciate a small production with lesser known names. The hate for Kathryn Bigelow is also unjustified. It's like people can't accept a women win best director. Sad,really sad.
I was expecting people to be arguing over The Hurt Locker and District 9 or Inglourious Basterds or something. How the hell can anybody think AVATAR was Best Picture material?
Good job. Loved this movie. People need to look deeper into a movie than just what is said. They have to pay attention to body language, thoughts that might be crossing characters minds, and etc. great movie and yeah people do still talk about it. It's just that everyone has seen it. Congrats lady, you earned it
I loved Avatar, but I wasnt mad that it lost. Im surprised the movie was even nominated, its not the type of movie that gets that sort of attention from these type awards. As far as Hurt Locker goes, I was not impressed with the movie in the least. Nobody even talks about Hurt Locker anymore.
@zonemystery Because "Avatar" features so prominently in the current film discourse? "Avatar"'s Best Picture nomination was ONLY because of it's box office gross. Don't get it twisted. And if there is a sequel, Oscar's not touching it with a ten foot pole, not as far as anything outside of special effects goes. I'm not accusing "The Hurt Locker" of being "The Godfather", but it's a better movie than "Avatar". By miles.
I was really upset to see The Hurt Locker win that night just because I enjoyed Avatar so much, but after these past few years watching the films that were nominated that year, I have to agree with the choice for sure. Kathryn and the crew deserved the win just by the fact that they revolutionized the war genre. And sure, Avatar did have a cool look to it, but that's basically all it had to offer. Thank you Kathryn for directing this great film.
Those who think Hurt Locker should not have won the Oscar I hope didn't think Avatar was more deserving of the Oscar.
Avatar was an okay movie, it had an unoriginal plot which had been done in many films before for example Dances with wolves. But their 3D effects and graphics they deserve some credit for.
At least Avatar won a few of the Oscars but not for best motion picture and Hurt Locker was a reasonable and fair winner.
The Hurt Locker was the best war film since Saving Private Ryan and one of the greatest of all time.
Even though my favorite film to be nominated that year for Best Picture was District 9, The Hurt Locker was better than every film in that category and deserved to win by far.
Avatar and Up, while good, should not have even been nominated. I liked Inglourious Basterds, but I wouldn't consider it one of the world's greatest films from that year.
So glad that The Hurt Locker did. The only thing that shocks me is that Avatar was even considered a frontrunner. I though worthy contenders to The Hurt Locker were Up in the air, District 9, Precious, and Inglourious Basterds. That's just my opinion though. I still think the Academy made the right decision this year. Great acting, suspenseful, emotional. Not just a bunch of special effects
Tom Hanks didn't even hesitate when announcing the winner. "It'snowtimetofindoutwhichoneofthese10filmsisabouttojointhatbogartandbergmanclassic.AndthewinnerisTheHurtLocker."
Avatar was pure creation and imagination and the hurt locker was just another american war movie. Let me ask how many films have you seen that are like Avatar and how many fimls have you seen like the hurt locker. Speaks for its self!
@Alexander1234683 yeah, you can't get much more original than avatar's screenplay. oh wait, there's pocahontas and dances with wolves. ever heard of those movies? why should the best picture go to a 21st century ripoff that was the most expensive movie in history?
@EricAKATheBelgianGuy You don't have to be a fan of Avatar to hate the Hurt Locker. ANYTHING would have been better than that movie. Not one oscar worthy quality.
I think that all these movies were terrific, but in my opinion District 9 was absolutely amazing, and for all those who think that Avatar was better, you really have no idea of what you are saying.
No disregard to Bigelow, the Hurt Locker was a pretty good film, but Inglourious Basterds was the best film of 2009. Tarantino should have gotten Best Director, Picture, and Screenplay to go along with Waltz's Supporting Actor win. The Academy neglected him for both this film and Pulp Fiction.
Man. Poor Tarantino. All of his movies are worthy of academy awards, but Inglourious Basterds was probably the movie that was "typical oscar material-y" enough to get him an oscar. Especially in 2010 when so many movies were nominated. Any other year half of em probably wouldn't have been nominated for anything at all. Keep making amazing movies Tarantino. You deserve a lot more than what you get. I hope one of these days you win an oscar. You deserve it.
Bit of disrespectful that Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghty had to sit in the back while the rest of the crew sat in the front rows. I mean Mackie and Geraghty were two leads in a best picture candidate, can they at least sit with the rest of there crew?
i was overjoyed that avatar did not win. visually it was stunning. the story and acting sucked ass. the hurt locker was such a better movie all around.
I would agree with most people by saying that Inglorious Basterds should have won, but The Hurt Locker was an incredible movie as well, so this wasn't too bad
I liked both movies, they are completely different to each other. I saw in the Video that Cameron was hugging someone of the Hurt Locker crew (Mark Boal i think). The conclusion that i give is that Cameron today must be thinking "My movie won 2.7 million dollars. So not a single fuck was given that day".
@alphaDMZ he actually really wanted her to win Best Director... i dunno about Best Picture though. he probably would have loved to have that one, just like he did with Titanic.
For Avatar fans its ok because im sure that after the oscars james cameron was rolling around in his $2.7 million dollars chanting "I can't hear you! I can't hear you!"
But I'm seriously, i was disappointed at first too, but after thinking about it, its really spectacular that an independent film like the hurtlocker won this award. Not all war movies have to be all blood and guts to get attention, this film focuses on the IED's and EOD teams that play a more crucial role in war now than ever.
can't fucking believe this movie won. Its not that Avatar or the Basterds deserved it more but it just feels shit. The movie was nothing special. It was just tension during the bomb scenes and that's it.
WTF was the academy thinking giving The Hurt Locker an oscar for best sound editing and sound mixing, I mean seriously, there were like at least five movies that had better sound more often in each movie. this movie is an example of that the academy only cares about THE REALLY BIG PRICES and then just doesn't care for the others. I bet kathryn Bigelow and co payed the academy a lot of money so that the movie would get more unneccessary awards so more dumb ass people buy the movie.
@Chars13x You said the hurt locked was boring but inglorious bastards should have won? I dont know if you was watching the same inglorious bastards as me but they had parts of that movie where they talked for 25 minutes at a fuckin time.
I thought Up in the Air deserved this one. But I guess they just wanted a female director to win. I understand the acclaim, but this movie was incredibly boring IMO.
I truly believe this entire year was crap for movies. Avatar was ehhh, but Hurt Locker was ridiculously boring i think you need to watch 1 hour and a half of that to actually get interested. I truely believe up in the air was the best out of the crap fest nominated
i think avatar was great, but i understand why the academy didn't choose it. But seriously though? The hurt locker??!! The big snooze fest??? Should of been inglorious bastards!
Hurt Locker was boring as all hell. I have a feeling they only gave this film an Oscar only because the director was a woman...I know that shouldn't matter but there is not anything worth writing home about in this movie whatsoever.
Mark my words people, I can't say how "The Hurt Locker " will be viewed by the film critics/snobs ten years from now but I *GUARANTEE* that avatar will have a VERY low reputation amongst those film critics/snobs in ten years.
avatar is simply an absolute insult to the intelligence of any person that has the ability to think rationally.
I actually turned the TV off when they announced the hurt Locker. They just love giving into the hype don't they. I bet you anything people in 10, 20 maybe in 50 years will still watch and talk about Inglourious Basterds, District 9, and Avatar while The hurt Locker will just fall into obscurity where it belongs.
I thought Inglourious Basterds should have won that year. I thought The Hurt Locker was just a same old same old kind of a war movie, ya know? But Inglourious Basterds had this incredibly original story, incredible screenplay, flawless acting, and just everything about it. I just felt The Hurt Locker was just... you know, whatever.
@pandabear102699 First of all, the Hurt Locker did not deserve to win by any stretch of the imagination. WAAAAAY overrated. Inglorious Basterds, District 9, A Serious Man, and Up were much better movies. Not to mention Where the Wild Things Are and Moon which weren't even nominated. Second, besides Return of the King, I can't think of a single Oscar winning movie that fits that description.
@myfacesp agreed Inglorious Basterds was AMAZING but it was too comical for the Oscars anyways, my vote was for A Single Man b/c of Colin Firth and Julianne Moore, or An Education was very good too. The Hurt Locker was just gritty but an epic movie as well.
Not the best film. It was good, but I wouldn't mind to see Inglourious Basterds take the prize.

@Chars13x You said the hurt locked was boring but inglorious bastards should have won? I dont know if you was watching the same inglorious bastards as me but they had parts of that movie where they talked for 25 minutes at a fuckin time.
devan14smith 11 months ago
I thought Up in the Air deserved this one. But I guess they just wanted a female director to win. I understand the acclaim, but this movie was incredibly boring IMO.

Im glad its a movie thats not Avatar, only i wanted The Blind Side to win but The Hurt Locker was a good movie too.

Hurt Locker was good but movie of the year???? I like how they didn't let any of the actors that made the whole movie speak when they won...

I truly believe this entire year was crap for movies. Avatar was ehhh, but Hurt Locker was ridiculously boring i think you need to watch 1 hour and a half of that to actually get interested. I truely believe up in the air was the best out of the crap fest nominated
missionbears 1 year ago
I loved Avatar (not sure I understand the hate) Up and Up in the Air, but The Hurt Locker was really the best movie of 2009.
Chris25698 1 year ago
i think avatar was great, but i understand why the academy didn't choose it. But seriously though? The hurt locker??!! The big snooze fest??? Should of been inglorious bastards!
Ninga0809 1 year ago
Hurt Locker was boring as all hell. I have a feeling they only gave this film an Oscar only because the director was a woman...I know that shouldn't matter but there is not anything worth writing home about in this movie whatsoever.

I get that Avatar sucks, but The Hurt Locker didn't deserve the win either.

Tom Hanks, you are probably one of the most wonderful men alive.

Avatar sucked...But this movie was just okay. I think either Inglorious Bastards or An Education should of won.

The Hurt Locker "PROWAR"
avatar "against foreign invasin"
you do the math!!

Well deserved. Not all winning movies have to be full of CGI and make millions and millions of dollars.
pandabear102699 1 year ago 61
@pandabear102699 First of all, the Hurt Locker did not deserve to win by any stretch of the imagination. WAAAAAY overrated. Inglorious Basterds, District 9, A Serious Man, and Up were much better movies. Not to mention Where the Wild Things Are and Moon which weren't even nominated. Second, besides Return of the King, I can't think of a single Oscar winning movie that fits that description.
mariolinker 1 year ago
@pandabear102699 ok, but James Cameron will be laughing to the bank with $2.8 billion dollars.

whats the music that plays when they win, whats it called i noe its from the movie
chikka5428 1 year ago
The Coen Brother's movie A Serious Man was much better than The Hurt Locker. I think it should've won. Or Inglorious Basterds.
myfacesp 1 year ago
@myfacesp I agree. A Serious Man was the best movie of 2009.
aloofbooks 1 year ago
@myfacesp i agree Inglorious Basterds should have won or A Single Man too, but their is no deying Hurt Locker was EPIC
ChristMelee 1 year ago
@myfacesp agreed Inglorious Basterds was AMAZING but it was too comical for the Oscars anyways, my vote was for A Single Man b/c of Colin Firth and Julianne Moore, or An Education was very good too. The Hurt Locker was just gritty but an epic movie as well.
