sort of. They were actually farmers who built them during their off season. I don't think they were actually paid, but rather did it as a community/religious thing... like helping fix up a neighbors house.

now that makes some sense but first I've heard it. what is your source? I heard the bones of the workers exhibit a lot of arthritis but I'm sure those that work in textile mills do to. We don't call them slaves but is there much real difference? Slavery back meant the same as indentured servant in our 18th century many times.

@Jonstern1983 I'm glad you guys are discussing this. I'm sure the pyramids were not built by slaves. Or rather I'm sure experts are sure they weren't built by slaves. The craftsmanship is impressive so many skilled tradesmen must've been involved. Although many hands would have been needed for the whole lifting thing but I think archaeological evidence (graves etc) suggests they were looked after pretty well.
