This direction of making sense out of the characters, whether traditionally set or not, makes a point that opera is the most complete art form. There are operas of course that do not make much sense when updated but Pushkin's realistic love story is quite timeless.
This is exactly what opera needs right now, instead of post-modern nonsense...
@carissia1910 It's an interesting performance but it is not Tchaikovsky's oper. Sorry.Poor Tchaikovsky and poor Pushkin ! I agree with the russian "it's kochmar"
I' ve seen the old version withe the old settings - this one is awful!!!!! Change it and reconstruct the old set designs. I hope, they won't put the "ivan susanin" awy for a new, modern production.
Has anyone seen the Faust of Gounod at the bolshoi?
OperaHeaven, can you tell me why this performance was controversial? I have nothing to compare it with, it seems very good to me. Maybe you can give me a clue. Thank you.
"... no tea with jam, no Tatyana in bed, no duel among the snow-drifts. The action is set in the dining room and all the movements are centered on a large dinner table that brings people together and apart, serves as Tatyana's bedside table and Lensky's deathbed. In the duel scene Lensky dies in a brawl as he backs and tries to snatch the rifle out of Onegin's hands..."
was it controversial? I was at it a year ago and found it a pleasant experience. Was it the fact that Lensky (Andrew Goodwain is not Russian? He's from Australia but I thought he played the part extremely well. Love his voice. I had the pleasure of sitting next to him on the way back to London to Heathrow the very next day. How amazing is that!!!!
wexfoordrebel, thank you for your comment. Please note that the definition "controversial" was not mine. I had asked OperaHeaven why he/she had found it so. It was bronxbearbud who answered, and I gathered simply that the traditional style must have differed considerably from this one. You were surely lucky to be there and to sit next to Goodwain on the plane the next day. Kind regards.
постановка говно. спасибо ГАБТ

the worst interpretation ever played.pathetic,dis-musical,Cacophony,unaesthetic .
the voices are OK ,but, alas ,the music ,tempo, rhythm, musicality ,musical idea all are lacking absent!!!distaste up 2 revolting,
Tchaikovsky had a concept, and this is a musical-zoo farce and a cacophony jungle

Da it is nightmarish isn't it? I suppose there is only so much you can achieve on stage, even the size of the Bolshoi. I loved the performance

Thank you very much - I see. It must have differed very much from the traditional style. Taken in itself, did it work? Was it good?
