Not sure what happened not gonna talk shit and place blame when I wasn't there and don't fuckin know I am oil field trash and a million things can go wrong on a rig but my thoughts are with the families if anybody that was on that rig got hurt or killed..
I wouldn't call him the luckiest derrick man alive. He is lucky to be alive, but the luckiest derrick man alive is the one that has never had problem or been in a bad situation... because I would feel much more lucky to never be in that situation than to narrowly escape with my life.
i've seen the hoisting clutch stick in the winter and guys run the crown, but it looks warm in this video. usually crown contact is driller error. i do hope no-one was on the floor at the time
@charlietow - What you're calling the "drill string" is actually called drill line. Drill line is whats wrapped around the drum of the draw works, runs over the crown, and then through the blocks. When someone refers to the drill string, they are talking about the actual "string" of drill pipe in the hole... a string of drill pipe.
theres a lever in thew drawworks that will respond as an indicator when hes within so many meters of crowing out. forgot what its called, just started as a leasehand for savanna about a month ago though. Love it.
DERRIK WORKER? MAN RUNNING THE WENCH? WTF?!? TAVELING BLOCK? You aint OFT useing that dialect. Next time try derrik hand, driller and blocks. fgn poser
i seen this video awail back and after it everytime i was in the drerricks i thought about this... dumb ass hands that don't pay att. will get someone killed
We crowned out a couple of months ago on my rig and boy was it a mess. It was because of miss calibration on the amphion system it was set to high past the crown and there it went. shook the location...
i was thinking... well whatever the near miss is i certainly didn't pick up on it and then finallly... damn! that was hard to miss...the whole thing plummets!!! i am too darn impatient
Hey chaps , the fucking driller ran the block into the crown , he had the kelly on still and thought he was pulling a stand looking for the tooljoint , any of you dumb arse yanky drillers heard of a crownomatic !!.
I was just on a ensign rig that two different drillers crashed the bails and elevators into the boards while trippin pipe, within two months of each other! got to be there for one which scared the shit out of me!
Head up the ass on the driller...Must not have had the crown-o-matic hooked up. Lucky they didn't lose the derrick and the sub and have everyone dead.
I used to paint marks on the drilling lines if it was too foggy to see the crown when we were running rods or when we had a tall BOP stack.
fuck yeah he crowned out!! if you frame by frame you clearly see the crown sheaves comin down after the top-drive assembly.... Jesus! Sure hope everyone was ok... besides the derrickman having to change his shorts!!
Stupid ass driller man ..what the fuck did he have is head up the pushers ass when he was going up ...who ever that man was working derrick is a lucking man that he wasnt standing at the end of that diving board ...damn hes luck hope it didnt kill anyone on the floor ...
and i thought it was scary when my driller crowned out. my guess is it pulled the blocks apart cause i dont see any drilling line but it moves by so fast a very well could be wrong.anyway geranteed that derrickhand had two change his underwear
I worked on a land rig in the uk when a drller crowned out 3 times in one night running 2 7/8ths drill pipe that horrible endy shit. Pulling out so fast he couldnt see the joints. And guess what, he didnt get sacked because there just wernt enough drillers in the company at the time. Although I have to ask, why the fuck didntthe derrick man or roughnecks shout out!! Always look up!!!
some real idiots commeting here, the topdrive is a tesco HCI, not a real heavy unit, blocks , swivel and Top-drive will be around 20 tons only - this isn't a big varco...
the driller crowned it out and down came the cluster.....
either no crownomatic or posistop etc fitted, of they may have not reset after a slip and cut etc....
the only thing dumber than this driller is some of the daft comments here from people who know nothing about a land rig???
@maxogino These idiots hear about an accident on a drilling rig or BP's latest disaster on CNN and they think they know all about roughnecking. Half of these people who say they know about the patch probably only cleaned the threads on casing...
I work as a Deric worker! Wat happened is the man running the winch on the floor wasn't paying attention and ran the traveling block to high, ran it into the top of the deric and the line broke! All in all I gotta pay attention at all times!
@rockkrawler29 I thought there would be some kind of safety system that would prevent the block to run into the crown. But this is anyways an unforgivable accident. The HSE on many rigs around the world is beyond any critics!
@feonor26 its called a crown-o-matic.. its a switch when the drum gets to full of line it shuts it down so you dont crown out.. not sure why they dont have it..
@feonor26 Travel limiters are ok.... but they fail to. Some drillers totaly depend on thier limiters and use them as a stop every time, they get slack and dont look up....the firft time the limiter fails, WHAM !!! SNAPP !!!........ LOOKOUT !
Iv never had a rig with a limiter, and never pulled a hook over the top wheel. Technoligy isnt the answer, alertness is.
@Andrewgft Can't quite agree with you there. Technology works when humans fail. You won't be alert all the time. People get dulled, routine sets in and with it comes sloppyness from repetative work.
@feonor26 That's exactly right. The travel limiter should be part of a feedback circuit that "enables" the movement in the first place. If the limiter fails, the whole operation comes to a stop.....for just this reason. That concept has worked in aviation for the last 30 or 40 years.
@feonor26 we had a crown saver on our rigg but if you were smokin em out of the hole the brakes on the draw works still dont stop the blocks in time havent see one hit the crown this bad tho, Scary shit man
@rockkrawler29 first of all its derrick... second of all the man running the winch is the driller and theyre called draw works. guess they didnt set the crown o matic..or something. idiots on that rig.

@rockkrawler29 - man running the winch-line?!?! its called the draw-works and top drive, ran it into the top of the derrick is called crowning out u tard, derrick worker?! how you get to be a DERRICK MAN is scary considering u don't even know the right terms for ur line of work.
@kirstenlaplante He is simply saying that the driller was operating the winch while hoisting. Not paying attention to how high the blocks were, Then he crowned out.
It's probably closer to 90 ft, and the block doesn't possibly weigh 40 tons. Maybe the rig was lifting 40 tons of pipe? In any case, a spectacular video.
Honestly the more I look at ti I dont think the drill crowened out that hard. I think the drilling line was shot to begin with. Watch the pipe after the blocks clear the screen. Theres no big crash. I have seen a driller crown out a rig many times. Theres always a huge crash and the pipe vibrates and shakes a lot. This driller barely kissed the crown. Furthermore, this rig is on 12 lines. You would have to do some SERIOUS stretching to get the line to a point where it would part.
@MrDMachuta the way the blocks went sailin past looked like he hit pretty hard to me and with 12 lines the drum must ve been going pretty good so there wouldn t have been much delay from when he hit to when the line breaks........ you've seen a rig crown out many times?? wow who do you work for i m never takin a job with that comp..... i v never even seen anybody run into the crownsaver unless we were testing it
I think the crown was cracked where the sheave pins were held in place. It goes by so fast I cant really tell if the sheaves are coming down too or not but, that would be my guess. @feonor26 as per the crown o matic if it wasn't adjusted after the slip and cut then that would have been the failure point. Electronic crown savers typically need to be reset each time a rig powers back up after a move or a black out. I'd caulk it up to something else though your right about it not seeming to collide too hard with the crown but then again I've never seen a rig pull the blocks through the crown in person.

This is a typical Driller-Error.
He didn't paid attention to how far the block was in the derrick.
He hit the crown, the crown broke and the block, kelly and crown come down.
