Elway was the most physically gifted QB in NFL history. If I were building a dream team, Elway would be my first choice at QB. He could beat teams by himself. Terrell Davis might be my RB. What a tandem they were. Too bad Davis' career was cut short.
I don't mind that you hate them. I'm a colorado native all my life and love it here. My Grandpa, Mom, Step Dad, and me have season tickets to the Bronco games. My grandpa has Alzheimer's and loves the Broncos. He is a great man. All I gotta say is John Elway is missed and a big thanks to him for making the Broncos great. My grandpa loves you john and I do because of him. He cried at your retirement. Go Broncos.
Montana won without jerry rice and with players who at the time were nobodies and he NEVER threw an interception he beat marino, and elway he threw 11 touchdowns he was a 3 time MVP won 4 superbowls and he made a winning drive even though he was hyperventilating and his running backs ran the wrong play he did not panic but threw the winning touchdown he did not have the strongest arm or legs etc but he WON and was cool under pressure
raider fan here, but have too say elway is not the best would be a lie.he took average teams to higher levels,he made average receivers better just because his passes lodged into their bodies like bullets.he ran like a drunken toddler, but catching him was a task.Brady,Montana,Bradshaw may have more rings but Elway produced with less talent around him then any other.
The greatest QB ever is Elway...no argument!!! He took 3 teams to the super bowl that had no offense and finally won 2 had helped him out. 5 super bowls and best arm the game has ever seen!!!
@1974molson Elway is the greatest QB of all time no doubt. Favre, Vick, Cunnigham, Mcnabb, Cutler, Jarmcus Russell (who sucked )but all had cannons for arms. Jamarcus Russell could take a knee at the 50 yard line and throw a football 5 yards out of the back of the endzone thats 65 yards in the air on a knee, (85-87 standing) . Kyle Boller is the only other QB in NFL history that could do that. You could say one of them have the strongest arm ever as well. But Elway was the greatest QB ever!!
Elway started in more superbowls than any other qb ever. and b4 td how many other good players were on the broncos? not a lot (skill positions any way). so i ask, John Elway, great quarterback, or greatest quarterback?
@richgannonrocks Look it up Chief lover. 87 MVP and carrying a so-so team to three SBs in the pre TD era. You really should do a little homework B4 U opine.
@wilkrazor2 1st of all fuck the chiefs. 2nd of all he was great and 87 was good for him too but he only had 6 20 td seasons. now is that bad no but i don't think he's the greatest, but was he great yes. 47 4th quarter comebacks is what made him great but in my opinion he's not the greatest. in my list of top 10 qbs he's #3 or 4. You're right he didn't have the greatest team and yes he's the only QB to go to 5 SBs, but he's not the greatest but great. hows that for homework?
@richgannonrocks OK. Fair enough. I agree JE is not the greatest QB is history. Among the best, but not the best of all time. Far from it. Personally, I'm a fan of Otto Graham. BTW, I'm good with yr home work.
please put a sock in it snaffpoop. the league always overstates the height of its athletes. i met wayne gretzky to years ago and they used to list him at 6'2" and im 6'0" even- i had atleast an inch on him
this is why i question if UNmontana would have been tall enough for the modern game. then again matt ryan cant be over 6'0" and he seems to do well
Elway went to 5 superbowls and has the second most wins all-time (behind Favre). That's 1 SB for every 3 years of his career during the time of Joe Montana, Steve Young, Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, Troy Aikman, and Brett Favre. Seems like he must have played with some great players, right? Do you know how many hall of famers he played with? Only OT Garry Zimmerman near the end. The Broncos went 148–82–1 under Elway, and he's the only guy people think was any good from most of those teams.
i dont remember elway being so light on his feet. this is probably the only 80's qb who would still be a star in the modern game- maybe marino as well, definately not montana because he's too short

@snaffoo21 ummmm YES, it is wierd to envision yourself being the center wearing no clothes at all having elway play with your bum before taking the snap to answer your earlier question...
Here is the BOTTOM LINE.....John Elway VS Tom Brady.....John Elway would make Tom d0uchebag Brady CRY....because John Elway would be WINNING the games in the last minute of the 4th QTR. he's done this more than any QB in NFL history. Tom Brady just Cries for a flag =)
To all the people that think Elway couldn't win the big one on his own and wasn't really that good: Dan Reeves thought that too and Elway spent the first 10 years of his career shackled to Reeves Stone Age offense, only being turned loose when the Broncos were losing. Then in Super Bowl XXXIII, Reeves told the Falcons to make Elway beat them by taking away the run. Result: Elway passed for 336 yards and 1 TD and rushed for another and was awarded the MVP.
When great teams like the 49ers and Giants knew they only had to stop 1 player on the field, it's easy to see why his numbers suffered. Montana didn't have that problem, since his offense was designed around short passes and he had Roger Craig and oh yeah the GREATEST WIDE RECEIVER OF ALL TIME on his team. Rick Reilly put it best when he said if Elway and Montana switched spots, the 49ers might win more than 4, but Montana would be in a coma in a year
@cacable7 I think Elway was at least AS good as Montana, but you're misrepresenting the facts. Montana won 2 Super Bowls before Rice was even drafted, and 1 SB before Craig was drafted. His 1988 and 1989 teams definitely had a turbo-charged offense (esp. '89), but 'in 81 and '84 he was not working with a particularly skilled offense. I would say having Walsh as coach was an advantage no other team could compete with, though. I imagine Elway would have done just as well, if not better under Walsh
@cacable7 Montana won without jerry rice and with players who at the time were nobodies and he NEVER threw an interception he beat marino, and elway he threw 11 touchdowns he was a 3 time MVP won 4 superbowls and he made a winning drive even though he was hyperventilating and his running backs ran the wrong play he did not panic but threw the winning touchdown he did not have the strongest arm or legs etc but he WON and was cool under pressure
Win back to back superbowls with undrafted players n late round drafted picks = Greastest of all time I dont care how many rings joe,or tom has they cant carry a team like number 7 did for all those years Elway=#1
Elway is the greatest! How do I know this? Take the NFL's greatest QB's like Montana, Marino, Young, Favre, Unitas, Manning, and Elway! Say there's 1:00 left and you need a touchdown to win. Who would you take? You all know you'd take Elway! That's why he's the greatest!
The only quarterback to throw over 50,000 yards, 300 touchdowns, win 140 games, and win multiple super bowl rings. John is the greatest by every measure.
If I could choose one player in his prime to build a team around, Elway no question about it . Not only extremely talented but if you ever saw him play there was no question he wanted to win more than ANYONE on the field.
@broncojuan or that he held on to the ball for too long. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't you guys have a HOF left tackle and a center who will probably get in one day playing with Elway?
@tomcardello I understand that thinking also, but that is riddiculous. You are saying Winder was as good as Craig or even better Johnson was just as good as Jerry Rice? LOL!!! To say Elway choked in games is also riddiculous. If he choked so many times, how did he have the most comebacks? To me that is not choking. And if he did choke in the first 3 superbowls, how did he not choke in the last 2? Is it because he might have had a better team around him? Use your head.
This is a great video, especially since it comes from a Gannon fan. That just shows you are a true FOOTBALL fan. Cardello is an idiot. JOE MONTANA WAS BENCHED FOR STEVE YOUNG AND THEN CUT FROM THE NINERS. NOW HE WEARS SKECHERS AND HAS GOOD POSTURE!!!! Google that shit bitch. BENCHED and then BOOTED.
@tomcardello Way to completely talk out of your ass. To quote tstarr17 as you seem to be both illiterate as well as blind, Elways' Bronco teams from 1984 to 1996 only had EIGHT COMBINED offensive pro bowlers, an insanely low amount when you consider that Jerry Rice went to the Pro Bowl 13x by HIMSELF. Think that helped Joe Montana out a little? Don't bother answering, you clearly know zero about football
@tomcardello Elway didnt have much talent around him during his career until 1996. that year, the broncos had gone 13-3 but lost to the jaguars in the playoffs. then the next year in 1997 they won the superbowl. they won it again in 1998. you cant blame elway for losing all those games. leading his crappy team to a couple superbowls is just outstanding.
elway never had a complete team like montana, aikman,or brady...he made the broncos a superbowl team...i'm a raider fan and hate nothing more then the broncos, but Elway is the best QB i've ever seen..you talk super bowl great teams it comes down to a number of greats...but the names associated with the broncos aren't great...except #7
@tomcardello Watch football much? Elway=Choke? LOL Do yourself a favor, save yourself some cash on your internet. Isn't it enough your friends and family know you are a moron? Why let the whole world know?
How many Pro Bowl players did Elway have in his 1st 3 super bowls on offense? vs Pro Bowlers Montana had? Google it.
elway is the all around best QB. maybe montana was a more accurate thrower, does that make him better? could montana have taken denvers team with no pro bowlers and having to run on third and long all the time to the bowl, no way. joe had the benefit of a star laden team, elway had nothing. hes the 6th leading rushing QB all time, 3,174yds over 50,000 pass. thats all around ability!! montana nowhere near either. only man with 5 superbowl starts. case closed.
cardshmello's team probably been burned too many times by Elway LOL... Elway 2nd Winnest QB of all time, where is Joe on that list? LOL, shmello just shut the fuck up.
tomcardello, or cardshmello, wake up dumbass, Elway carried 3 of those Denver teams in the 80's. And you can have the stats you want. I would like to see Montana throw to guys like tony Kimbrough, and Mike Young, and Clarence Kay, as opposed to Guys like Brent Jones, and Jerry Rice. Montana always had a team IDIOT, Put Elway on those 49er teams they would have won 9 Championships easily. Montana is no different than Brady, no dynamic, nothing to put you on awe just good. Elway was Great
tomcardello is an idiot. the 49ers are the team that played weak teams. in the 80's their divison was falcons, rams, and saints who totaly sucked back then. and since they played them twice a season it was almost guarenteed 8 wins. All they had to do was play 500 ball outside their division and they had 12 wins. sad to see such a low iq.
@rvegas7 The 49ers mowed down opponents---weak or strong. Get your head out your ass. 1989 Playoffs----points for : 126. Points against : 26.
49ers 55 Denver 10. And that was with Montana sunning himself on the sideline the second half. Could have been 75 - 10. 49ers won 4 Super Bowls in the 80's.....how selfish of them to only play weak teams for that 10 year span. You are a child.
Elway was great. I do believe he was better than Joe Montana and def better than Tom Brady. Brady threw 1 that's 1 touchdown pass during his 1st super bowl run. So don't tell me that Brady wasn't on a good team. Elway was the man.
so you knock Elway for not holding passing records but then you say Favre shouldn't be near the top 5. 3 straight MVP's. that's insane. And he holds almost all the records
yes hes also played for how many years and has thrown how many TD passes inside the 5yrd line? He also holds the record for most picks and has fucked his team up in crucial parts of the season way too many times..and i never said elway shouldnt be listed in the top 5 just is not 1
Brady, like Montana was lucky to play on a great team with a great system etc.
The 80's Broncos that prime Elway took to 3 SB's was not a very good team, avg. at best and when Tom Jackson tearfully thanks Elway himself for getting the Broncos to the SB's what does that tell you?
In the words of John Madden "This is the closest thing to a One Man Show (Elway) that I've ever seen in the NFL"
@broncocookie I agree with you, Brady, Montana and Peyton Manning were lucky to play on great teams, Elway, however, has played alone. He was unsurpassed, the greatest quarterback that I ever seen. The Magnificent 7.
@adrmaieski Manning doesnt play on a great team. when they won the superbowl in 2006 their defense ranked 23rd. and look at Marvin harrisons stats before Peyton Manning came, about average. Manning brought the colts to the superbowl with two rooki WR last year, rookies
@broncocookie People might just think your saying that because your a broncos fan well I agree with you and im a Cowboys fan. Elway is the best but Montana played for the Cheifs in his last year and got them to the championship game against the Bills so I think Montana is the 2nd best. Brady is Shit though you can't even compare him to John Elway
" Elway carried a mediocre team to 3 Super Bowls on his back. Because he didn't win it all by himself, he's a choke artist?"
Perfectly put. It's a silly argument.
Elway was gifted in a way Montana and few others ever have been. But he wasnt so gifted that he was playing every position on the field at the same time. lol
He lifted above-average Bronco teams to 3SB's. Won two once he had a bit more around him.
You come in here bashing Elway and praising Montana... Why is it that Jeff Garcia is higher in passing yards than Joe Montana? You'd think with Jerry Rice by his side that entire team, he'd at least be up there with Elway, right? Haha!!!
You'd think with all those thumbs down people keep giving you, you might actually realize that Elway has many major accomplishments. But no. You're too ignorant. You go around searching for Elway videos so you can come in and talk all kinds of crap.
When you learn a little bit about football, maybe I'll come back and discuss this with you.
Why is it that Joe Montana with his PRO BOWL team, including JERRY RICE, is over 10,000 yards BEHIND Elway in passing? Elway carried a mediocre team to 3 Super Bowls on his back. Because he didn't win it all by himself, he's a choke artist?
The moment he had a good running back, the Broncos won 2 straight Super Bowls. He finished his career as the MVP. Remember that 80 yard touchdown pass? You probably don't. You're too busy bashing Elway to see his accomplishments.
Do you think it's a coincidence that Denver went to 6 AFC Championships and 5 Super Bowls under Elway in just 16 seasons, yet Denver has only won ONE playoff game since his retirement after the 1998 season? It's been more than 10 yearssince Elway left, and Denver hasn't seen one Super Bowl.
"Montana had better RB's" I hate to break it to you, but the fact that Montana had a better running game does NOT make him a better quarterback than Elway.
Chokeway? How many quarterbacks finish their career as Super Bowl MVP? NONE.
Elway didn't WANT to do it all himself. He HAD to. Why do you think he has more 4th quarter comebacks than any other quarterback? The moment Elway finally had a decent offense, he won back to back Super Bowls.
You are one of the most ignorant, biased morons on the web.
Plug this into youtube and show me Tom Brady, Brett Favre, Peyton Manning or your precious Joe Montana do this...
FACT: Elway has over 10,000 yards MORE than Joe Montana throughout their 16 season carrers
FACT: John Elway has been to more Super Bowls than any other quarterback
FACT: Joe Montana had a great offensive line protecting him, while Elway's offensive line allowed him to be sacked over 500 times. An NFL record. Yet he still managed to do more than Montana even as the most sacked quarterback. His last game, he was Super Bowl MVP
What impresses me the most with quarterbacks is their ability to take the game into their own hands when they need to make something happen. John Elway, by himself, made games exciting. That's why he's the greatest quarterback of all time.
Joe Montana? His ENTIRE offense was Pro Bowl caliber. Give his offense to guys like Elway, Marino, Manning or Favre and they'll get just as many Super Bowls as Montana did... Probably more.
No, its Bill Walsh vs. Dan Reeves. Bill Walsh constructed his offense towards passing to set up the run. Dan Reeves constructed his offense towards running to set up the pass. Had John Played for Bill Walsh, he would have thrown 450 TD's. He only threw over 20 TD's once when he was with Reeves.
he wasn;t that good elway was alot better the fact he won won mutiple superbowls and even made it to the superbowl 5 times with average players is feet elway for president
elway by far the best qb never had a gd team but my god wat a clutch player hands down the best gb fuck marino fag never won shit or carried his team it was always elway
brady did the same but i will say this elway can carry ateam brady manning cannot elway single handlely carried his team to 5 superbowls and thus is the greatets qb / clutch performer
No one was/is better than Elway. I'd say a handful are in his league, but no one is better. I'll put Montana, Favre, Peyton Manning, Unitus, and Moreno are all in his company.
Elway was the most gifted QB to ever play in the NFL. Others such as Aikman, Brady, etc have won more super bowls and/or have had better supporting casts but Elway can never be equalled as a clutch performer or intuitive passer.
He won a lot of games as a starter but his qb passer rating ain't that good and his completion percentage compared to many quarterbacks is pretty low. Based on stats he is no where near how big his reputatioion is. Steve Young, Joe Montana, and Dan Marino were a lot more effective stats wise.
Are you kidding? The only thing Joe Montana has better stats wise than Elway was Super Bowl wins, and yes, his completion percentage, but if you look at everything else, Elway was way better. He had the most wins, until Brett Fart couldn't retire, more comeback wins then any one else, more yards the Joe and Steve, more TD's then Joe and Steve, and more Super Bowl starts then any one else. As far as Dan Marino, he's better in most stat catagories, but the dude never won a superbowl.
Elway was the best. period. dan , joe didn;t have Elways skills. young is second, but Elway had POWER. did dan run thru people, Joe? No Elway always made something out of nothing. Joe couldn't of did what Elway did. what if Elway was on the 49ers, wit Rice, roger, rathman, Lott. It would be unfair. elway went to 5 superbowls wit average talent. He put teams on his back. ALL the time.
Ive said for years the same thing, Elway is #1 and Young is #2. Most people seem surprised with the idea of Young being #2 and they expect Montana or Marino, but Young was awesome and had more skills than possibly any QB in history.
john elway was the best qb ever going to 3 super bowls by himself n than winning his last 2 he was great thats y he was my favorite qb im a cowboy fan but he was my favorite qb
john elway never through for more than 30 td's in a season and won a superbowl with the best running back in the league at the time. tom brady played 90% of his career with troy brown as his number one reciever the very first season he played with a hall of famer he set a record and went 16-0.Try 50 touchdowns in a seaon 3 super bowls and counting he already has more superbowls than elway and he's not done....so about wat you said THATS NOT TRUE SO GET UR FACTS STRAIGHT
nigga Elway was the best. period. He could run he was strong, he run over ya ass, he had a CANNON. Elway was as perfect as u can get. Brady nice. I like
Brady. He can't run, he won't run u over he's not nearly as tuff as Elway. brady's fav qb is Elway. WHAT.
me to, elway is the reason i became a denver fan. even though im twelve, my dad showed me highlights of john and in my head im like "OH MY GOD" hes the best. whenever u think of john elway u think of accuracy, speed and power. Also u think of combacks. He is the record holder for most combacks ever and i dont think anyone will ever break that record. But the best memories of him were the helicopter dive and "THE DRIVE". He will always be the best in my mind.
Elway was the most physically gifted QB in NFL history. If I were building a dream team, Elway would be my first choice at QB. He could beat teams by himself. Terrell Davis might be my RB. What a tandem they were. Too bad Davis' career was cut short.

PhillipS5428 1 year ago
To all the people that think Elway couldn't win the big one on his own and wasn't really that good: Dan Reeves thought that too and Elway spent the first 10 years of his career shackled to Reeves Stone Age offense, only being turned loose when the Broncos were losing. Then in Super Bowl XXXIII, Reeves told the Falcons to make Elway beat them by taking away the run. Result: Elway passed for 336 yards and 1 TD and rushed for another and was awarded the MVP.
cacable7 1 year ago
When great teams like the 49ers and Giants knew they only had to stop 1 player on the field, it's easy to see why his numbers suffered. Montana didn't have that problem, since his offense was designed around short passes and he had Roger Craig and oh yeah the GREATEST WIDE RECEIVER OF ALL TIME on his team. Rick Reilly put it best when he said if Elway and Montana switched spots, the 49ers might win more than 4, but Montana would be in a coma in a year
cacable7 1 year ago 8
@cacable7 I think Elway was at least AS good as Montana, but you're misrepresenting the facts. Montana won 2 Super Bowls before Rice was even drafted, and 1 SB before Craig was drafted. His 1988 and 1989 teams definitely had a turbo-charged offense (esp. '89), but 'in 81 and '84 he was not working with a particularly skilled offense. I would say having Walsh as coach was an advantage no other team could compete with, though. I imagine Elway would have done just as well, if not better under Walsh

Use your head.
loub72 1 year ago 4
@tomcardello yeah, look at the talent Super Joe had around him. Put him on a team with less talent and see where he would go. Lets compare:
Vance Johnson to Jerry Rice
Clarence Kay to Brent Jones
Sammy Winder to Roger Craig
Put Elway with those guys and you have a team that would win the Super Bowl 10 years in a row!!

Don't bother answering, you clearly know zero about football
texasbeltbuckler 1 year ago
@tomcardello his WR's and o-line, until 1996, (combined) were only voted to the pro bowl 8 times.
tstarr17 1 year ago
@tomcardello Elway didnt have much talent around him during his career until 1996. that year, the broncos had gone 13-3 but lost to the jaguars in the playoffs. then the next year in 1997 they won the superbowl. they won it again in 1998. you cant blame elway for losing all those games. leading his crappy team to a couple superbowls is just outstanding.

Great, great college and pro-player.
shinjukool 2 years ago 8
Okay, tomcardello.
You come in here bashing Elway and praising Montana... Why is it that Jeff Garcia is higher in passing yards than Joe Montana? You'd think with Jerry Rice by his side that entire team, he'd at least be up there with Elway, right? Haha!!!

Ironman374 2 years ago
Why is it that Joe Montana with his PRO BOWL team, including JERRY RICE, is over 10,000 yards BEHIND Elway in passing? Elway carried a mediocre team to 3 Super Bowls on his back. Because he didn't win it all by himself, he's a choke artist?
The moment he had a good running back, the Broncos won 2 straight Super Bowls. He finished his career as the MVP. Remember that 80 yard touchdown pass? You probably don't. You're too busy bashing Elway to see his accomplishments.
Ironman374 2 years ago 3
tomcardello
Do you think it's a coincidence that Denver went to 6 AFC Championships and 5 Super Bowls under Elway in just 16 seasons, yet Denver has only won ONE playoff game since his retirement after the 1998 season? It's been more than 10 yearssince Elway left, and Denver hasn't seen one Super Bowl.
"Montana had better RB's" I hate to break it to you, but the fact that Montana had a better running game does NOT make him a better quarterback than Elway.
Ironman374 2 years ago

Horrid examples of Elway's supposed mediocracy.
