Maybe you'll see the light someday that pretty much every F1 driver is a hero and it's a ridiculously competitive sport. Peace out homedog.
@Jejking Jerking my ol' buddy! touche!!!! But check the facts on that race. Schumacher let that peckerhead by, on a track that he had raced a 100 times. Hardly the pass of the year, get your facts right son. Its remembrance day tomorrow in Canada, those are real heroes man, enough said. RIP to those Canadians that liberated the Netherlands, Peace out homedog.
@SStheruler Got a source on that one? No, you don't but I do. Check the FIA online archive 1997. Villeneuve tried to hold the pack up, it came back to bite him when Irvine went for it and was able to sprint away. Inspired move, end of story. And don't try to switch the subject with bringing in the Canadian warriors liberating the Netherlands (more helped), everybody already knows they are and were heroes. And so are the survivors of the work camps, like f.e. my grandfather. Shame, shame on you.
This was a strategy guys. Villeneuve was driving sub judice and he tried to stop schumi (the only opponent in the championship). Schumacher tried to pass but Villeneuve closed him against the wall of the pit. So the team ordered at Schumi to let Irvine pass to overtake Jacques with all the possible risks. Then schumi wins the race...
That was a planned move so the Ferrari team could get Villeneuve pushed back and schumacher pushed through so Schumi would be able to close right up in the championship.
A brilliant move, but Irvine was not constant enough for being more than a number two driver. He had his big chance in the chaos year 1999, but he failed.
@olehomer88 Ferrari years could have been so much for him had he made of them. You only have to look at his Jaguar results in comparison to his teammates to see that the talent was certainly there.
What? Johnny Herbert? He was on his way out of F1 and got a lucky last win in Nurburgring 1999. Then we had Luciano Burti and Pedro de la Rosa, who only got 1 podium in a good McLaren and scored a grand total of 35 points in his entire career.
Had the Jaguar been better Irvine could have had a longer career.
I dont know if you lot remember but Jacques was holding the field up by 4 seconds a lap in anger because he knew he wasnt going to get any points for this race. Schumacher was also canny enough to realise that letting Eddie Irvine go was the best option in wearing Villeneve down.
At the end of the lap Eddie overtook Villeneuve too!! It was his best race until he had to let Schumacher pass. then also dropped behind Frentzen after the pit-stops. And he had the race in the bag...
Irvine's move was greatly facilitated by the fact that Villeneuve was trying slow the pack down to get others pass Schumi.
Jacques had failed to slow down under yellow flags in free practice multiple times that year and did it again at Suzuka so the FIA were not going to let him race as a punishment.. Williams made a protest and got Villeneuve start the race but it was almost certain Villeneuve would lose any points he gets. And he did lose the 2 points he got from 5th place at Suzuka.
The grip is on the outside through the esses at suzuka, Eddie knew this as he had spent a few years driving in formula nippon before getting into F1, thats why he always drove fairly well at suzuka, knew the track well.
@wolfmother4eva even though its clear Schumacher slowed to help Irvine get round the outside. Irvine then went on to pass Villeneuve and block him allowing Schumacher to get past and win.
@WhyGenFM3 I saw that race. How convenient that Ferrari's critics always skip over the 99 German GP. Salo blew everyone away (even Hakkinen!) but Ferrari ordered him to let Irvine through.
Bollocks. Eddie was a great driver who was unlucky to be in a great team as a number two to the greatest F1 driver in history. In 1999 Eddie showed his luck, but more his skill. Great driver, too bad Jaguar sacked him.
They fired him coz he's a cocky arrogant man... who knew full well that he signed a contract to join the greatest coward & contract negotiator in f1 history to make sure he had no competition.. when schu broke his leg he could't even beat a jordan in the best car and no team orders.. he sucks!
Thats right i have to say. Irvine actually had a clause in his contract that stated he wasnt allowed to pass Schumi or had to let Schumi through if he was behind Eddie....
Get over it all of you its a move from 1997 Great that was 11 Years ago why are we arguing about that why dont we all just go and watch this years championship and stop arguing like little school girls!
I'm affraid that no one of the comments realized what happened. This is indeed a brilliant move but of team strategy. In order to allow Irvine to help Schumacher, Ferrari needed to have Irvine in front of the race. The pass on Hakkinen was a sinchronized trap: Schumacher braked harder than usual, forcing Hakkinen to also brake and at that moment Irvine stepped on the outside of the turn. And then he passed Schumacher like it was planned. There was nothing Hakkinen could do, true teamwork.
@ismaelpaulino yes i agree : But I don't like this : even if I'm italian I don't appreciate the Ferrari startegy like for instance Barrichello allow to Schumacher to overtake him in Austria race (on 2000?) and Massa the same with Alonso this year. Congratulations to Red Bull for their sportmanship strategy during last race In Japan when vettel won even if a victory of Weber can give them more advantage on the Championship drivers. It is not important only to win but also how reach the result!
@Gamereo:Think before you react.Barrichello had only 6 points,Michael had 54 points, wich means that Michael had a run for the championship and Rubens was alraedy out of championship contention.Ferrari was right to give Michael the victory,It was in 2002 by the way. This year it,t almost the same situation with Alonso and Massa. This time Ferrari is right again. It could cost Ferrari dearly if they let the second driver beat the first driver.
@PinoThePizzaman77 I disagree totally! Because the strategy can be right as a team BUT in my opinion the team can't not seek to impose his driver to loose a ride in order to advantage his colleague within the team! This is not correct! Ferrari was the lonely team that do it clearly.: for instance this year Red Bull leave her drivers to compete like in Japan and in the past the same made Mc Laren. Last but not least : I'm italian and Ferrari sustainer but this doesn't allow me to say the truth
@Gamereo:But this is the case with all the Formula 1 teams. If one driver has a run for the championship, then the second driver is ordered to help him. It,s the best way to win the championship.By the way,i don,t mind if you disagree. My reaction is not an attack to you.
@PinoThePizzaman77 I understand that it is not an attack don't worry: we're only discussing. Sorry but my opinion remain the same: even if I estimate Webber more than Vettel I appreciate the Red bull decision to not interfere in Japan between two drivers. I know that The situation is different respect to massa Alonso or Schumacher Barrichello but consider that in this way they risk to loose the championship: in fact Webber can have +7 points of advantage on Alonso (very important at this point)
@Gamereo:Think before you react.Barrichello had only 6 points,Michael had 54 points, wich means that Michael had a run for the championship and Rubens was already out of championship contention.Ferrari was right to give Michael the victory,It was in 2002 by the way. This year it,t almost the same situation with Alonso and Massa. This time Ferrari is right again. It could cost Ferrari dearly if they let the second driver beat the first driver.
You must be senile. Hakkinen wasn't in contention for the 1997 title. The one they REALLY raced was Jacques Villenueve in the Williams. Where Hakkinen ended in the race didn't matter at all.
Second of all Jacques Villeneuve had ignored a yellow flag and wasn't allowed to race, his team complained and he was allowed to race but knew damn well whatever his result would be he would most likely be stripped of his points after the race. So he tried to give others a better chance...
So Villeneuve INTENTIONALLY held up the field behind him and hoped to minimize Schumacher's chance of victory. When Irvine passed, this didn't bother him since Irvine wasn't in contention for the title.
Hakkinen also brilliantly won in Suzuka in 1998 and 1999, and the same dirty Ferrari tactics (which only they ever get away with a not other team) was tried once again in Nurburgring in 1998 when Irvine tried to hold Hakkinen back. This time I didn't work and Hakkinen won.
irvine should have won that race butt as commen as it was ferrari were built around micheal schumacher who was the only driver ever to need help to win a championship
Fangio, Prost, Gilles Villeneuve, the list goes on of drivers who won championships and that received preferencial treatment, its been going on far longer than your feeble mind seems to be able to comprehend. these drivers were the best of their eras so why shouldnt they get that treatment, they earned it through years of succeeding without it
Sorry, Villeneuve did not win a Championship. He came second to his Ferrari team mate Jody Scheckter in 1979 though. Gilles could've won that year but team orders were in favour of Scheckter in order to keep the Williams team behind them. So Monza was the last race Villeneuve knew he could keep a chance for the title and he still obeyed and let Scheckter past. Hence why he was so angry that Pironi disobeyed orders in Imola 1982.
Gilles is definitely my favourite driver along with Senna.
Ronnie Peterson was an honorable sort too. Only him and Andretti had a chance to claim the 1978 title, but the agreement was that Andretti got it. Word got out that he was going to drive for Ferrari next year, so someone said that Peterson could theoretically go for the championship. Peterson merely said, "I gave my word". Gilles, Ronnie. Massively underrated drivers.
Is the kind to say do you know who I am. Is as tight as a Scotsman and didnt even go to his own grand mothers funeral cause he had something else to do like sitting on his yacht

What the fuck ever! The only reason Eddie was able to do that was because Jacques was holding up the field in hopes that someone would pass Schumacher. Which apparently no one besides Irvine would, because they're all pussies.
You said it. The pass was brilliant because Eddie was the only one who didn't wimp out. He might not be the fastest driver of his era by a long shot, but his successes and one title chance came about when he showed he had the balls that most others lack.
canadinandude1974 you would say that jack villiujeve whatever his name is just a wanker and will never be as god as michael schuamcher 91 wins 7 times champ and the best ever so there shut up....
he used to race in Japan before F1, so he knew Suzuka better than anybody... maybe statistics dont say that, but Eddie was one of the best drivers of that era.
jdpa00 - my 'greatest moment in F1 in the 90s' has to go to Villeneuve passing Schumacher on the dirty outside of the track around the Senna curve at Estoril, in '96 I believe it was. That pass was amazing, and me being Canadian has nothing to do with it. Coming out of the corner on the outside behind the lap traffic and in its draft to completely obliterate Schumi with balls and oval track technique, that was the best. Oh how I wish the cars were wide again and racing on slicks.
Each time i watch a race from Suzuka that Irvine pass comes to mind. It's too bad F1 is moving to the Fuji track - I'll really miss Suzuka. From the first corner to the left curve going up the hill, that was the best section on the F1 calendar.
you're a barrichello or a DC fan, right? You must be, considering your opinion of Irvine...
Yes, the whole world knows that Shumy slowed Hakkinen.
But...
1-Eddie did it on the dirty side of the track.
2-Looking at the leading Willliams (Villeneuve)we see that shumy and mika were only (more or less) 5% slower than usual on that corner...thus making Eddie's move the greatest F1 moment of the 90's!!!!
Fair point, don't bite my head off lol. And btw i am not a fan of DC, he's overated nowdays and Barichello, hes a desent driver but im not a fan. Kimi and Webber are my fave guys!
So what, it was still a pass around the OUTSIDE of the 'S' corners, where there was little grip and it was at 160mph+. Pretty balsy I would say my son.
While I never liked Irvine, that was a pretty ballsy move, not only risking taking himself out by passing on the outside, but also risking taking his teammate out as well. Like digitalmp3player said, very nice.
later that lap,he passed villeneuve in casio, and after 3 laps gaps between them were 13 seconds....so eddie waqst very fast...but not constant....

@ismaelpaulino

@ismaelpaulino

Fangio, Prost, Gilles Villeneuve, the list goes on of drivers who won championships and that received preferencial treatment, its been going on far longer than your feeble mind seems to be able to comprehend. these drivers were the best of their eras so why shouldnt they get that treatment, they earned it through years of succeeding without it
kinghenryviii 3 years ago 4
Sorry, Villeneuve did not win a Championship. He came second to his Ferrari team mate Jody Scheckter in 1979 though. Gilles could've won that year but team orders were in favour of Scheckter in order to keep the Williams team behind them. So Monza was the last race Villeneuve knew he could keep a chance for the title and he still obeyed and let Scheckter past. Hence why he was so angry that Pironi disobeyed orders in Imola 1982.
Gilles is definitely my favourite driver along with Senna.
Tombag77 3 years ago
Ronnie Peterson was an honorable sort too. Only him and Andretti had a chance to claim the 1978 title, but the agreement was that Andretti got it. Word got out that he was going to drive for Ferrari next year, so someone said that Peterson could theoretically go for the championship. Peterson merely said, "I gave my word". Gilles, Ronnie. Massively underrated drivers.

What the fuck ever! The only reason Eddie was able to do that was because Jacques was holding up the field in hopes that someone would pass Schumacher. Which apparently no one besides Irvine would, because they're all pussies.
Ziltoid667 4 years ago
You said it. The pass was brilliant because Eddie was the only one who didn't wimp out. He might not be the fastest driver of his era by a long shot, but his successes and one title chance came about when he showed he had the balls that most others lack.

he used to race in Japan before F1, so he knew Suzuka better than anybody... maybe statistics dont say that, but Eddie was one of the best drivers of that era.

jdpa00 - my 'greatest moment in F1 in the 90s' has to go to Villeneuve passing Schumacher on the dirty outside of the track around the Senna curve at Estoril, in '96 I believe it was. That pass was amazing, and me being Canadian has nothing to do with it. Coming out of the corner on the outside behind the lap traffic and in its draft to completely obliterate Schumi with balls and oval track technique, that was the best. Oh how I wish the cars were wide again and racing on slicks.
canadiandude1974 4 years ago
Each time i watch a race from Suzuka that Irvine pass comes to mind. It's too bad F1 is moving to the Fuji track - I'll really miss Suzuka. From the first corner to the left curve going up the hill, that was the best section on the F1 calendar.

a great move. good old eddie knew suzuka like the back of his hand. shame about his error in the big showdown there in 1999 qualifying.
davenewsome100 5 years ago
no, schumi slowed the mclaremn behind him down, which allowed irvine to pass the two, you should know ferarri team orders by now....
f1diva 5 years ago
F1diva,
you're a barrichello or a DC fan, right? You must be, considering your opinion of Irvine...
Yes, the whole world knows that Shumy slowed Hakkinen.
But...
1-Eddie did it on the dirty side of the track.
2-Looking at the leading Willliams (Villeneuve)we see that shumy and mika were only (more or less) 5% slower than usual on that corner...thus making Eddie's move the greatest F1 moment of the 90's!!!!
jdpa00 5 years ago
Fair point, don't bite my head off lol. And btw i am not a fan of DC, he's overated nowdays and Barichello, hes a desent driver but im not a fan. Kimi and Webber are my fave guys!
f1diva 5 years ago
So what, it was still a pass around the OUTSIDE of the 'S' corners, where there was little grip and it was at 160mph+. Pretty balsy I would say my son.
857blocked 5 years ago
it was a good pass for sure but not a great one, but fair dos he pulled it off
f1diva 3 years ago
While I never liked Irvine, that was a pretty ballsy move, not only risking taking himself out by passing on the outside, but also risking taking his teammate out as well. Like digitalmp3player said, very nice.
