  • Top stuff. My parents used to go see the Watersons at the Olde Blue Bell in Hull where this is filmed in the 60's. I do an accompanied version of the Watersons Swarthfell Rocks - check it out on my channel.

  • got a chance to see Louis Killan a couple times in St. Paul before he went back East - was still great 40 years later

  • A wonderful family ... but it's sad to see so many of them with a fag in their hands ...

  • great footage, although a bit smokey for moden tastes, you can smell the nicotine

  • That would probably be Charlie Bate of Padstow

  • does anybody know who Charlie Bates was/is ?

  • get "bright pheobus" on u torrents or amazon best thing theyve done shame they dont get any royalyties.

all songs about the sun, janishish plays on it .

  • why has my grandad never told me they made a video??

  • @TheMarkWaterson Your grandad is a bit of a dark horse eh ? Check out Land of Green Ginger, there is a clip of them performing for a TV play in 1972.

  • @caferive: agreed ;-)

  • Wonderful...

  • @irelephant - very well put.....no music should reach at the heartstrings like folk music...its about us!

  • You are just doing what your heart and mind and spirit wants.Your nationality is irrelevant.all the artists you name were considered great then, but have now rightly passed into legend. But It would have been nice if a few million Yanks had cottoned on to what was going on back then though!.

  • Aww, Anne Briggs playing with that baby! That makes this whole video worthwhile, for me at least, those two seconds of footage.

  • damn the 60's were the shit. I feel sorry for anyone thats wasnt around for them.

  • Holy cow; Anne Briggs is in this. Nice to listen to her. A treat worth downloading, not just adding to favourites.

  • The duet between Norma and Lal -- especially the harmony on "the buying, the selling" etc. -- never fails to put a lump in my throat. Just gorgeous.

  • Sadly, Lal recently passed away. Apparently, somewhere on youtube, you will find her daughter singing her composition "Fine Horseman", a song also covered by Anne Briggs.

  • Viking1au: Yes, that was very sad -- part of the reason this clip (well, the whole film, actually) feels so poignant.

  • @viking1au - i wonder if this is the same "fine horseman" covered by the silly sisters?

  • Have not heard the album it is on, but you can bet your boots.! The album was No More to the Dance & obviously not as super popular as Silly Sisters (they kept the name) but I am told good. Someone has posted a song on youtube called Agincourt Carol, apparently from this album. As the song was also done by Anne Briggs, who influenced all of them, you can count on this being the same song. There is also a posting on youtube of her daughter, Mary Gilhooley doing it.

  • hmmm am gonna have a look for that...thanks for letting me know!

  • Could also be worth tracking down the series Folk Britannia. There are approx 4 or 5 on the tube now, including Anne Briggs & the Watersons, interviews with Bert Jansch, Davey Graham, Shirley Collins, Anne Briggs, Martin Carthy, etc etc. Worth while; I have downloaded the lot.

  • Ann Briggs was some looker back then!

  • Wonderful film, actually entitled "Travelling For A Living" - the whole thing is on a bonus DVD in the Free Reed Martin Carthy 4CD set. The shots of the "tour bus" (hah!) being started are priceless.

  • Superb, Ewan McColl and Peggy Seger were the sound track to my childhood in the late sixties, brought a tear to my eye, thank you for posting this, must dust off me flute.

    Tom

  • If you like this try you tube Luke Kelly Thirty Foot Trailer

  • YES! Thats how I found this video through his version! :D

  • Thanks for sharing, elgruga.

  • Pubs haven't allowed smoking for sometime now, and neither have we missed you. Enjoy the mooses and snow.

  • I went in this pub many a time when I was younger. I recognised the sign above the passage way. Its The Olde Blue Bell, down Alfred Gelder Street in Hull. I remember the room downstairs had pictures of old Hull FC and Hull Kingston Rovers teams hung on the walls. This was in the late 70s and I don't remember any folk club though. Shame really. It always a grotty pub though.

  • After watching this it's occurred to me that Bert Jansch must have sold his soul to the devil, not just for his astounding guitar work but also for being with Anne Briggs, to have been with someone as amazing (on every level, it seems) as she. Bert, when the time comes call Daniel Webster. He may be able to swing you a deal.

  • The Northerners of England seem so down to earth..!! Like they are happy with the simple things in life.. I admire that..

  • Their way of singing this song is so haunting. Beautiful.

  • Wow, Anne Briggs was a surefire stunner in her day, amazing footage thanks.

  • Ann Briggs really was the Beeswing. Any chance of a come back tour? ....silly question, I know!

  • Last I heard, running a garden centre on one of the Scottish Islands.

  • Which on of them??

  • Nice to see this, but what a surprise seeing a young Norma. Her daughter Eliza is an absolute double.

  • @saffsgrandad

Was just about to post something similar - they're freakishly alike, even for mum and daughter!

  • Can this documentary be seen in full anywhere?

  • I could hardly believe that after all these years that I would see the Watersons & Anne Briggs singing above the Old Bluebell in Hull in 1965.

I was at Uni in Hull and they were a must on a Sunday.

happy days and I still shout Byker Hill after a few pints ofJennings!!

  • Magnificent. So great to see Anne Briggs especially, but the whole thing is wonderful. Thanks for the upload.

  • i cant believe this ive looked for footage and video of early Anne Briggs for years and was convinced there wasn't any. This is a real treat.Any of her singing. "Tambelin preferably"

  • I've never seen Anne Briggs in movement before.

  • Another place another time - who would smoke this much around singers now, let alone wth a tiny child in the room! Love the electric fire hung from a nail on th wall too.

  • beautiful folk singers, they had martin carthy joining the group later.

  • This is lovely! I've loved the Watersons since buying 'Frost and Fire' in 1983. Thanks for posting this and the other clips!

Are these from the DVD footage included in the CD box set?

  • HOLY &#$^%!!

It's really her, the dazzling star-child herself -- Anne Briggs, back in the day! ... and (hey RT!) she's even conscious! ... and seemingly sober as well! ... this is truly a miracle of youtube all right ...

  • Thank you so much for posting this video. I've never seen the watersons on a video, I'm amazed. THANK YOU.

  • This is quite fabulous,i am playing The Anne Briggs Collection at this very moment and i thought i'd look on you tube for her and found this.I didn't know any film of her existed so this is truly awesome. Thanks a lot.

    Pat.

  • I never knew any footage existed of Anne Briggs from those days so this is a real discovery for me.

  • What an absolute gem. Thanks so much for posting this.
