If I remember correctly, I think the White House even appealed to the Pope in Rome to intercede on their behalf to quiet Father Coughlin.

Father Coughlin spiraled out of control in 1936. Anti-semitism aside (which is quite a large lode to throw overboard), Coughlin believed in militarism of the government which is a cornerstone of fascism. His support of FDR (another pro-socialist) waned in November of '36 because he believed that FDR was not radical enough in his socialist agenda (Just refer to letters from Hitler and Moussolini if you doubt FDR's socio-fascist bent). Coughlin's hate of communism was due to his love of fascism.

Whoa! Father Coughlin was really on to something. I've read a lot about Father Coughlin. By all accounts, he was probably the most politically influential non-elected individuals of the era. So much so, that FDR sent Joseph P. Kennedy and the Archbishop to try to get Father Coughlin to tone down his anti-New Deal/ FDR rhetoric. If I remember correctly, I think the White House even appealed to the Pope in Rome to intercede on their behalf to quiet Father Coughlin.

Secondly, that Coughlin opposed the Klan was hardly a lone act of bravery. The KKK had been more or less destroyed at that point. Whatever was left was on its way to irrelevance.

Whether the Bolsheviks were bad people is irrelevant. They were, but it doesn't excuse Nazism or sympathy with it. "Father" Coughlin used these same arguments to advocate against "European entanglements," -- in other words, avoiding war with Nazi Germany.

Our children must be taught that the only thing that matters in the end - THE ONLY THING - is where they will spend eternity, Heaven or Hell. Father Coughlin was not intruding upon politics. It was (and is) politics intruding upon the Faith.
