I was born in 1975 and I see this big time. To me, commercialized women are ditzes. To them, I'm stupid because I don't "know" to be shallow and looks obsessed. More and more, the men are reinforcing the sexism of the media. When I was younger, guys were less piggy like that. Now, they actually want ditzes. They used to WANT quality.
With bad and tasteless media the real solution is to fight it with good and constructive media. Dove Corporation launched a campaign to fight against the tasteless images Diane Levin is against, but she does not want to acknowledge this because her way is "all media and capitalism is the same". The irrational thinking of a radical.
The techique of Levin and Kilbourne is that they point out the very worst of everything, but yet they that's its all the same.
Sure there is some backlash against the women's right movement with deregulation, but at the same time there is new additions to the women's right movement, which involves giving both men and women a rebellious image.
However Diane Levin's does not want to point this out. Either she is a radical or a socialist. So her whole message is the same old message. "All capitalism is the same" and "deregulation allows the capitalist to re instate sexism".
Deregulation overall is a good thing. That's because FREE SPEECH is more emphasized. Sure there is some sexism, and there are advertisements that are distasteful. However because of deregulation, new and rebellious images of women were also expressed. There was less emphasis on identity and conformity but instead there always was a pursuit of a rebellious image of both the male and female. I also think the gay/lesbian movement should owe a lot to deregulation.
@Eceoes Reaganomics have been bad for the people. The reason why the middle class is disappearing and our tax dollars are being used to BAIL OUT Goldman Sachs cronies can be traced back to Reagan's era. De-regulation also means that the rich pay next to no taxes and public institutions like schools and roads are suffering.
I think for the most part this is all irrational hype. Especially when Levin was bashing how deregulation is a bad thing that brought back old school sexism. Nothing was worse than the 50s, because gender identity was so strong that ANY deviation was taboo. Worse there was SERIOUS regulation, which means free speech was restricted.
