Trust me, these owners were holding way back on their 'treatment' of these horses. I know first hand how these animals are treated in more private situations and its not pretty. When these horse come into our hands they have little or no spark to them and highly headshy from being regularly ear twitch and smacked or punched in the face. They are also ridden and driven from yearlings with heavy unbalanced blokes swinging off their mouths. When they are done they are turned into breeding machines
This is horrible. There's nothing wrong with taking your horse for a swim, but trying to submerge them completely?! And whipping and kicking them until they leap/fall into the water is just going to make them more afraid of it!

Being a shelter volunteer I see absolutely no value in forcing a horse into water to "alleviate" its fears, that doesnt work. I laughed at 4:18 when the yellow jacketed rider fell in! If the horses are there to race and be sold what good does it do to make them go into water if they dont want to! Ridiculous

I really don't see this as being cruel to a horse as none of the horses were injured at all - an amount of force was used in proportion to each animal that none were hurt. They were jolted or kicked to make them go forward. What was disappointing was that no riders led their horse to the water - taking fear from the horse. But hey why don't you just cancel the fair. Do gooders about to ruin an traditional annual event.

Ive been to appleby and not seen one!,not one! incident of cruelty in the whole day...I did see hours and hours of swimming and washing and grooming though.
As for the ledge,I was nearly killed when my horse tried to take me for a swim in a settling pool! She would love it in there!But anyone who owns an umbrella shot be shot for frightening her!
See how many of the horses at Appleby are well cared for and looked after before trying to make out that that they're all treated harshly. In reality just a very small minority ever suffer any real harm at all. You don't get to see how many horses across the land are seriously harmed and even have to be killed after falling when being jumped, raced and used in dangerous events etc,,, but that's OK is it?

Watching this video has prompted me to take action against it, and I am flying over next year to help stem the flow of abuse to horses and their foals especially. I'm a member of the police academy where I live, and am a part of the mounted police squad. Maybe i'll see you there.
@specialstuff94, If you really cared about horses rather than having a bias against certain types of folk then go after those who race horses first. Hundreds of race horses get killed every year in the UK,,, and that doesn't include all the deaths caused through jumping and other events. Go and look at how many young horses are punished in training by wealthy folk who don't care what they do to their animals as long as it gets results before picking on a few travellers. Take your blinkers off.
@Rob187ok Who said I wasn't already looking in to the racing industry? I have taken steps to try and remove jumps racing especially from Victoria, which is the last state to ban it in Australia, and have also rehabilitated over 25 ex-racehorses in my life. I currently own 9 of these, 5 of which broke down in racing and will never be rideable again. The other 4 are starting their new lives as riding horses. Don't judge on what you don't know- I know what these people are doing in Appleby.

Horses do not have any depth perception. They don't know if its a puddle or 30 meters deep, which is understandably why they are fearful of going in! My horse won't walk through a puddle and quite frankly if i had no depth perception i wouldn't either. To force a horse in by whipping is in my eye's cruel, gentle persuasion as with anything else a horse is scared of, is much kinder. The RSPCA & WHW do attend, more so after a horse drowned, but there's still not enough to patrol the whole fair.

this is abuse, not the fact that they're making them swim, just how they are going about it. There are plenty of other ways to get a horse in the water without kicking and beating on them. Personally, I want my horse to trust me and go into the water because they know I won't steer them wrong. It's not hard at all to get a horse to trust you enough to follow your lead through anything. Trust me, these owners were holding way back on their 'treatment' of these horses. I know first hand how these animals are treated in more private situations and its not pretty. When these horse come into our hands they have little or no spark to them and highly headshy from being regularly ear twitch and smacked or punched in the face. They are also ridden and driven from yearlings with heavy unbalanced blokes swinging off their mouths. When they are done they are turned into breeding machines

I do believe there must also be good horsemen there too; however, the people in this video are the ones who spoil Appleby Fair - and everything else equine - for everyone else! There is no evidence to suggest punnishment methods (eg. the whip) have any positive effect on any animal; positive training is ALWAYS more beneficial in the long-term!

I really don't see this as being cruel to a horse as none of the horses were injured at all - an amount of force was used in proportion to each animal that none were hurt. They were jolted or kicked to make them go forward. What was disappointing was that no riders led their horse to the water - taking fear from the horse. But hey why don't you just cancel the fair. Do gooders about to ruin an traditional annual event.

Ive been to appleby and not seen one!,not one! incident of cruelty in the whole day...I did see hours and hours of swimming and washing and grooming though.

In reality just a very small minority ever suffer any real harm at all. Watching this video has prompted me to take action against it, and I am flying over next year to help stem the flow of abuse to horses and their foals especially. Hundreds of race horses get killed every year in the UK,,, and that doesn't include all the deaths caused through jumping and other events. Go and look at how many young horses are punished in training by wealthy folk who don't care what they do to their animals as long as it gets results before picking on a few travellers. I have taken steps to try and remove jumps racing especially from Victoria, which is the last state to ban it in Australia, and have also rehabilitated over 25 ex-racehorses in my life. I currently own 9 of these, 5 of which broke down in racing and will never be rideable again. The other 4 are starting their new lives as riding horses. Don't judge on what you don't know- I know what these people are doing in Appleby.

Horses do not have any depth perception. They don't know if its a puddle or 30 meters deep, which is understandably why they are fearful of going in! My horse won't walk through a puddle and quite frankly if i had no depth perception i wouldn't either. To force a horse in by whipping is in my eye's cruel, gentle persuasion as with anything else a horse is scared of, is much kinder. The RSPCA & WHW do attend, more so after a horse drowned, but there's still not enough to patrol the whole fair.

I'm a 13 Year old I even know this is wrong. Horses are being abused because idiots wanna show them off. If you wanna show off a horse then treat it nicely and dont do this! One day I will get a horse, I've always wanted one I know I won't treat it like this! I have to wait for a decent horse to come along and those horses are great, but I can't have one because they are all badly treated and scared. I bet half of those people can't even ride a horse, let alone look after one! STOP THIS NOW!

yah these people did do bad things. but that dosent mean that ALL the people are bad. a lot of them love thiere horses and find this a good way to make them use to people. when a horse is spookey you have to scare it more and show it that even tho its scared..its not being hurt. and will eventchualy be ok. but not every one hert thiere horses like this...it would be like denting your car on purpus because it ran out of gass.

this fair has been running for ages, and most gypsy are good with the horses e.g. old generation, saddly this is the new generation of gypsy folk and they are named as a hard bunch to deal with. :(

i've always felt that, a true gypsy loves and cares for their horses possibly more than a weekend hacker because they r everything to them their transport, their livelyhood and their pets, please dont tar every1 wiv the same brush, there r very saddistic and ill informed people in every walk of life but a few bad horsemen dosent mean that appleby is wrong, it just needs better mesures to make sure that these beutiful, careing animals are treated with the care and respect they deserve.

@itikalo they are taking them down to the river to wash them, as at appleby most horses brought there are sold. Those poor horses they arent given any chance to even have a drink before they are smacked and kicked into the river

This is sheer barbaric! I see NO love for these horses just BRUTAL BULLIES. Horses are quiet, sensitive, shy and trusting. They are also LOYAL and do anything to please? This is no way to reward such a beautiful majestic animal. Plus the arse-holes here have NO right to call themselves Gypsies. True Travellers look after their animals!!!!!! The reason this 'traveller' scum gets away with this behaviour is because they have been granted rights as a minority in the UK. They are thieves, drug runners, tax dodgers and abusers to people and animals alike. Seeing little boys kick a pony, their fathers and uncles kick horses, idiots ride a panicked horse in a river, shoving foals etc etc is all the evidence we need to despise them..... Now I feel better I 'accidently' let go off my Rottie when they tried stealing parts from my car.

@StartItWithASmile In all fairness, I've dealt with too many severely ill and abused animals owned by pikeys. It's not a co-incidence. We've had gypos caught stealing parts from my 4x4, caught stealing animal feed, farm machinery, and copper & metal from our building sites. Seeing numerous gypo cobs tied to the side of a road everyday. Travellers bring hatred upon themselves. There is nothing you can say to change the horrific and frequent crime the pikey community craps on the UK

I would love to see one of these horses kick the living crap out of these big MEN who forced frightened animals into the water. Its unfortunate that these horses fall under the ownership of ignorant jerkoffs.The whipping and beating of the horses to force them into water, then to submerge them must be a terrifying experience for these horses.
Lucky I dont live there or I'd exterminate all those pieces of crap who were abusing those horses by submerging them till THEY weren't moving anymore.

How the hell can people just stand there and do nothing, the horseowners are abusing their horses!! Some horses even got foals that they force down in the water, and they even nearly drown a couple of horses!! Stop this shit NOW!!
Sure I make my horse do thing that she think is "scary", but a do it with patience and motivation so the horse doesn't get scared of the thing i am making her do!! Like going in to water pools... I have NEVER hit or kick t my horse and I hate people who does that!!

It's not the horses which need a good wash! Such a shame the Cumbrian Council and this Government are happy to let this happen EVERY year? Hold your heads in shame Council, not to mention the boarded up shops and pubs and the rape of a 13 year old local girl by a mass group of lovely Gypsey people. Yes crime is everywhere but, why create crime by having 30,000 of these so called wonderful people in one place? I don't see many nice people on this video!
