I have a ~3.5GPA and I volunteer at a local community pharmacy once a week for 8 hrs. But I'm thinking about changing direction to dentistry. Dentistry > Pharmacy in regards to demand and salary, but we will see. How about you?

@tjd07x You are right, dentists definitely make more money and are in more demand. Thing is I want to do what i love doing... and that is not looking at people's teeth all day haha. Im in my third year too getting my bio sci degree. So stoked for pharm :) Thats great that you are volunteering at a pharmacy! did you just walk in and ask if they are willing to take on volunteers?

@HealthEuphoria I got quite lucky, actually; my dad is friends with the man that owns a pharmacy here in the town I live in, but all he did was get me in touch with him, then I just asked if there would be an opportunity to shadow at his pharmacy, he said yes, and I spent a day up there, which went well, the people were nice and I just spent the day talking to the pharmacists and techs, they also got me doing blister packs(the most mundane fucking task in the world, but a good way to burn time)

@HealthEuphoria but anyway, after that I called back the next day and set up another shadowing day, which eventually led to me coming in once a week now. I mostly do pharmacy tech work, which is super easy and super boring, but its a good mutualistic relationship, because I get quality experience and volunteer hours, and the owner gets free labor. But anyway, if you or your parents know a pharmacist, just ask if you can shadow/volunteer for a day and see where it leads

Congrats. Just remember....just because you were accepted it does not mean that you will finish. The PharmD program is very tough and every year you will notice your class getting smaller and smaller.

On my first day of pharmacy school we all gathered in a big room. The dean said "look at the person on your right and look at the person on your left.....one of them will not make it."

On a good note...3-5 couples that meet in pharmacy school end up getting married.

I was actually accepted into the University of Utah College of Pharmacy this year. I was just as excited to hear the news. Man, it was a great day! I got the news that I was accepted, then just took an hour or so to just drive around and listen to music by myself to kinda soak it all in. Beautiful experience!

@WarrenAch - You have your selection backwards. Med school should not be your first choice. I meet a lot of medical residents who regret investing the time and money. MD is not what it used to be due to managed care.

@pharmd718 You're actually right, i left my plans on getting into a Healthcare job long ago, salary is decreasing, respect as well and saturation for Dentistry and Pharmacy jobs keep increasing.

The worst became M.D., a good 20 Medical Schools are being built right now and they will not increase residency spots.

Results ? It will be like Australia, students getting their M.D. and end up not matching in a Residency, not even Family Medicine.

I prefer Law at McGill, much more rewarding.

@WarrenAch - Law is a good choice. Just remember that in order for you to get the most out of your law degree, you should seriously consider obtaining an MBA once your done with law school. Most of the wall street exects earning 7 figures hold both a law and an MBA. My brother in law has both and makes 700k per year. He was making 90k with just his law degree. My brother who's a CPA/MBA was making 120k as a CPA but now makes 450k with his CPA/MBA.

I had 3.94 GPA after my first year, then after my 3rd semester, it was dropped to 3.48, I missed the early assurance admission by .02. Now I have to apply regularly through PharmCAS by writing an essay, taking PCAT and 3 recommendation letters. argh!!!

Poor guy...he has no idea what he got himself into. I go to TTU pharmacy school. It is the worst shit ever. Yeah, I made a great career move but omg, nothing could have prepared me for the succubus from hell that is Pharmacy school. I was told that 75% of students in pharm school abuse drugs or alcohol, and I believe it.

ehh i'm not discouraged, i'm more worried about pre pharmacy, i'm good with drugs, i used to do drugs and research all kinds of shit i still remember a decent amount of what i learned, that was four years ago; toxicity, side effects, drug interactions, pharmacology is not too hard for me to remember but doing calculus will be, that actually takes brains while pharmacy school as long as you got a good memory and you study an ample amount it sounds like you should be pretty decent, i hope atleast

Work hard, don't expect to be able to just study the night before an exam like you are used to and do fine. I put well over 20 hours of studying for some of my exams. Pharmacy school is a whole new level as you are competing against the best of the best who have fought to get in. There is no substitute for putting in enough time. Make friends to study with and talk things over with so you don't forget any stuff that's due and deadlines.
