That's a neat little house, but no thanks on the $2K incinerating toilet. A homebuilt Humanure toilet, a portable toilet, or even a regular toilet running into a 55 gallon drum with a single field line and flushing with greywater is a lot cheaper and doesn't rely on fuel, electricity or paper liners.
HELLS YA. i'd live in that for a starter home.... buy a piece of vacant land cheap...i'd take away the silly toilet, and the trailer, and plop it on a cinder block foundation. house is done!
I checked out the website for this company, out of curiosity. These little dwelling spaces are $20,000 - $50,000. You would be better off building your own, or speaking to a contractor about building a small boat-style room on a trailer. Just my opinion.
His comment about the cost of a septic tank does seem outrageously high, unless you remember his location. Keep this in mind, things don't cost the same everywhere. In some parts of California, a building permit can cost $30k, and take years to get.
remove the fake fireplace install a spiral staircase there to a loft to sleep in. seperate the electric stove from the sink before someone gets killed. dump that $2000 toilet that uses the little paper McDonalds employee hats and put a regular toilet in & just pipe it to an out house so you got 2 if that dont work for ya just put a cement block carport below & have the bowl flush right in the back of your pickup and when you go out just drop the gate. now if that aint green i dont know what is.
Very frustrating; interesting topics/subjects but terrible camera work. What a shame. Not watching anymore of these no matter how interesting the subject line looks- too disappointing.
He said this can go down the freeway, it has a pink slip. So you can travel with this just like a tiny house? Or do you need to pay for a special permit to move it?
@srvafool Yeah, my friends that live in Northern CA, the bay area of all places, in Boulder Creek... they paid a contractor under 5 grand to set one up. Anyone who pays 50 grand is smoking some good stuff.
I think the technology for the toilet is awesome, but it is aesthetically unpleasing. Does it use water? If so, might I suggest looking into Japanese washlette toilets. I'd also recommend taking your shoes off before entering the house. It keeps the floors much cleaner. This house is much bigger than most Japanese apartment. I'd like to import one over here. Possible?
@japanascope The toilet doesn't use water. The idea is that this is an option for people who aren't connected to sewage/septic. Though the house can be connected and then you could use a water toilet. For purchase info you'd have to contact the builder (info in the original story-- link above). Though my guess is it would be too expensive to export one of these to Japan.

Personally, I'd build one of these myself to live in full time. Also, why don't you wander around nude anyway? Anyone who complains about you being nude in your own place has to have been looking in the first place to see.
really awesome way to live.. but theres no way in hell im crapping in something that doesent use water and a pipe to take my crap far far away.. not vented into my garden.
Wow in the south a septic would cost you about $3500 with a good perc. Before buying a lot make sure you have a good perc test and enough usable land. And for you lake folks stay 50 feet from surface water with your system.
@Kontaktt They likely have to go get and store their own water. It's not as complicated as it sounds, and they sell tanks of various sizes. Most easily capable of fitting on the back of a truck. After that, it's all about filling the home's internal tank(s). So once or twice a week you'd have to go get water, but there are pumps everywhere for this purpose. Getting rid of used water is the easiest part. It's probably as simple as a small pipe or hose delivering the used water away from the home.
@kirstendirksen I could see creating a kind of loft above the kitchen/bathroom, too, to keep the living space/office intact, it'd involve reworking the roof, but with such a small space, it likely would be pretty feasible :)
@raider54DJ He has it set up as an office so there's no bed. You'd have to do it differently if it were to be your home. Perhaps a bed that doubles as a couch, or a lofted bed. Obviously I'm not an interior designer, but people have done much more with less space.
I think a small house like this would actually be more comforting to people than some big "normal" sized house. Small spaces can make a person feel safe and snug, like living in a warm cocoon. I could see this type of housing for many people, especially those who have been homeless and have felt vulnerable in big, unprotected spaces.
I could buy a three thousand dollar truck, a thousand dollor truck camper, and put on two solar pannels to charge two batteries, then put in a on demand water heater, then put in a propane incinerating toilet, and add a sand filter and carbon filter for grey water run off, and live cheeper than most will tell you.
I thought the same thing on the shower and lav as pedery2k. Septic systems in Ohio start at $12k. Not $3500 or $50k. I paid $36k for a 1700 sq. Ft. House that's already hooked to sewage. WTF.
@ThePolarisdog In California new septic tank regulations went into effect in 2010 that now make installation more expensive. I've read that costs range from 10K to 40K for installation. The higher figure is if your soils testing is terrible. Otherwise, the lower figure is an estimated minimum for all required testing, engineering, design fees, permit and inspection fees, and the cost of hiring a licensed contractor.
@000Winter000 Grey water is the waste water from sink drains. In most communitiies, it is unlawful to dump it in/on the ground for disposal. I guess toothpaste is now considered a bio hazard. Adding grey water to the incinerating toilet is inefficient use of the energy required to operate it.
I have plans to build a small home and am considering it to be 12 feet (inside) This house looks narrower than that to me. Just looking at the guy standing against the wall at 2:25. I am guessing he's maybe 6 ft. Doesn't seem you could lay him down and have six feet left to other wall. His head would be hitting the chair. Is this really 12 ft wide and my perspective is that way off? If it is, I am building mine at least 14ft wide!
@bellalush It's 12 feet wide and 20 feet deep (240 square feet), Perhaps he measured from the exterior walls so inside the measurements could be a bit smaller.
@bellalush lol, Yeah they measure these things from the outside but you really dont have that much living space. I seen a cabin for sale and they said it was a 30 ft long,..the built the pourch on to the house adding fen feet. Like a mobile home, the tounge is included in the footage for some reason I really dont get it.
One unanswered question remains - with electric toilet and no sewer connection, how is the grey water disposed? Does one route it into the toilet for incineration?
@pedery2k I probably phrased that poorly. You don't need any septic/sewage hookup for the incinerating toilet, but for any other greywater (kitchen, bathroom sink) you would need to either hookup to sewage or find a way to use the greywater in a garden.
A whole lot of misleading and wrong info need permit for 12 wide load, septic systems installed run about $3500.00 not $50,000.00, need large truck, escorts, permits, and permit to set up tiny home, no mention of that. A travel trailer with 5 slideouts will run about the same price= move with a HD pickup, about 14' wide set up, financing, resale able, alot nicer, has holding tanks, more advantages by a long shot. RV co will set up & move rv, port o let co will serve your sewage dumping problem
As an experienced Tiny Home resident, I agree with everything in this video. Right now I'm in 8x26 Ft, and a 12 foot width would allow me to place furniture in ways that accomodate 2 people (right now it works best for just me). I'm definitely bookmarking this one for future reference!
this is defenatly more to liking then the tiny house what seem like they are like large closets the price on these needs to become much less considering you can buy a small trailer home for 20k that would be larger then this
this is defenatly more to liking then the tiny house what seem like they are like large closets the price on these needs to become much less considering you can buy a small trailer home for 20k that would be larged then this
omg!! 50k for this one?? thats really expensive...i mean whats the advantage of buying one of these verses buying a mobile home for that price.. i thought it would be around 10k-15k but not that much..
What particular design is this house that you are showing in this video? Or in other words, how can anyone order it or get information about it, other than referencing this video?
@Jharen1231 Stephen Marshall is the designer (the one I interviewed in the video) and he sells custom-made little houses from his company in Petaluma, CA-- Little House on the Trailer (you can google it for his info). I also have a couple other videos profiling him, the Tiny House Movement and his other designs.

I could buy a three thousand dollar truck, a thousand dollor truck camper, and put on two solar pannels to charge two batteries, then put in a on demand water heater, then put in a propane incinerating toilet, and add a sand filter and carbon filter for grey water run off, and live cheeper than most will tell you.

it's a Obama house,
(for the people, not him), lol.

I thought the same thing on the shower and lav as pedery2k. Septic systems in Ohio start at $12k. Not $3500 or $50k. I paid $36k for a 1700 sq. Ft. House that's already hooked to sewage. WTF.
ThePolarisdog 1 year ago

If it is, I am building mine at least 14ft wide!
bellalush 1 year ago
@bellalush It's 12 feet wide and 20 feet deep (240 square feet), Perhaps he measured from the exterior walls so inside the measurements could be a bit smaller.
kirstendirksen 1 year ago
@bellalush lol, Yeah they measure these things from the outside but you really dont have that much living space. I seen a cabin for sale and they said it was a 30 ft long,..the built the pourch on to the house adding fen feet. Like a mobile home, the tounge is included in the footage for some reason I really dont get it.

One unanswered question remains - with electric toilet and no sewer connection, how is the grey water disposed? Does one route it into the toilet for incineration?
pedery2k 1 year ago

RV co will set up & move rv, port o let co will serve your sewage dumping problem

the toliet is just wrong. a tank does not cost $50,000.00 to dig and build.

i would love one but at least 500sq ft with everything though like a room livingroom bathroom and i wouldnt mind this is too small

As an experienced Tiny Home resident, I agree with everything in this video. Right now I'm in 8x26 Ft, and a 12 foot width would allow me to place furniture in ways that accomodate 2 people (right now it works best for just me). I'm definitely bookmarking this one for future reference!

this is defenatly more to liking then the tiny house what seem like they are like large closets the price on these needs to become much less considering you can buy a small trailer home for 20k that would be larger then this

Jharen1231 1 year ago
@Jharen1231 Stephen Marshall is the designer (the one I interviewed in the video) and he sells custom-made little houses from his company in Petaluma, CA-- Little House on the Trailer (you can google it for his info). I also have a couple other videos profiling him, the Tiny House Movement and his other designs.

how much?
nathuwjohn 1 year ago
@nathuwjohn This one is $50,000, but it's his most expensive. He also sells one that is just 10 by 12 (or 120 sq ft) for $12,000.
I just asked Stephen for more info. Here are the prices he just sent me:
10 x 12 $12,000
Cedar House $17,500
Caregiver $25,000
Art Space $40,000
Office $50,000

@watkins35146 This one is built as an office. Since they're custom-made I believe they could build one with a loft for the bed.
