  • O _ O

  • 2:04 Kid Rock?

  • John had Michelle in mind when he wrote this song. She was cheating on him with Denny and Gene Clark and who ever else.

  • It makes me really happy to see mama cass..that someone can be expected even if they look a little out of place from the rest..no one is better than anyone..were all in this together

  • god bless,i bless you,mama...

    thanks cass

i hope to have some coffe and something more with you there

  • This is a work of art ..man ,the words and music sure hit home

  • 2 PEOPLE HAVE NO WHERE TO GO :/ (so sadd)

  • I like the part where she say's she isn't the kind of girl who can only love one man...

  • And now its a health insurance commercial.........hippies are hypocrites........

  • @SuperThunderlips um, they have nothing to do with this as most of them are dead..

  • @auntbecky Shut up....like the skinny blonde haired chick doesn't collect a paycheck from that commercial. Or the hefty singer's daughter doesn't get a paycheck from that. Hippies didn't beleive in profit. They beleived in sharing the wealth, like Obama. And to sell out to of all things an insurance company??? Wow all of those over-dosed dead hippies are spinning in their graves.

  • Pure Classic!

  • ELDERPLAN

  • You are so right ,peaco1000.One of my all time favourite songs.

    bisous47

  • outtasight

  • Just turning 25 and I have most of these albums in their vinyl form! Great music can be enjoyed by all ages <3 Long live real music

  • I wanna go where I want to go.. Straight back to the sixties.

  • @goodthing52 haha yes I ll follow you

  • so interesting. I was looking this up for lyrics that I THOUGHT were in it. I thought it was Be what you wanna be, say what you wanna say...funny about memory huh? this is NOT the message I was looking for, but I do love this group and in particular Mama Cass. I guess I was 14 when it came out, and I just rmembered like i wanted to..

  • i graduated that year and had the album. life was good

  • @ajonable how did life turn out since then?

  • I am really torn. The Mamas and Papas were a great band, however, after all that has come out I wish somebody would have shot John Phillips in the head.

  • @gcmcpa Don't let the singer's lifes effect the music that is played.

  • I guess both of the papas got some action then! ;))

  • Typical Hippies before my time but a good song. I crack up every time I hear a girl like me can't love just one man lol ;)

  • elder plan commercial Lol

  • tempos bons foram e não voltam, hoje somos OBRIGADOS a ouvir tanta porcaria, graças a DEUS tem tecnologia para nos salvar.

  • The Mamas and Papas brought me here. Period!

  • Wiki brought me here...

  • Travelodge brought me here, they surely made super songs back then !! nice 1.!

  • Just another immortal song that sprang from the mind of musical genius John Phillips.

  • @Rags722 WOW! That's crazy. I really wish that was the extent of the bad things they put out there these days! You could probably find someone sitting on the toilet on some album cover somewhere now. hahaha!

  • May I recommend the book 'A Pop Revolution, the transatlantic music scene 1965 to 1969' by the invisible man. The author is a big fan of this track.

  • This song was written mid 60's & released @ the height of the "Summer Of Love" when people all over the world flocked to San Francisco & literally let their hair down.... The song is about spreading your wings & finding your feet in a society that frowned upon any feelings of liberalisation that an individual had... If you didn't conform you were an outcast. It was never a slutty song....

  • Fifth Dimension's version is better, although if you never had heard it, you would certainly like this version, as it stands on its own.

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • How times have changed. How many people remember the bathtub cover on the album was banned in some places because it showed the (gasp) toilet? Second version of the cover had the "Monday Monday" sticker hiding the toilet.

  • @Rags722 That's crazy. I really wish that was the extent of the bad things they put out there these days! You could probably find someone sitting on the toilet on some album cover somewhere now. hahaha!

  • @charliegirl6 WHAT?!?!

You better get a grip girl or you'll be 'on the pole' soon. Surely your moral compass is not that pitifully WEAK? I was a teenager when this song came out AND, having been a fan of the Momas & Papas. . .let's just say I know what I'm talking about.

There is NOTHING (repeat NOTHING) about this song that is slutty, now or ever. This was simply a call to freedom for mostly American teenagers. If you value your freedom today, you can thank Mama Cass and the Mamas & Papas

  • @beaumob Nicely put!

  • @beaumob Let me ask you something Hippie I was just a 2 year old when this song came out. Does this mean you were born in the YEAR of FREE LOVE! lol ;) is that what valuing your freedom means!

  • @charliegirl6

    What a weird though process.

  • I have the Gold Version of the Greatest Hits of the Mamas and the Papas, and it sounds OK, but I was genuinely blown away to hear this vinyl version. It sounds way more energetic and you can actually hear the bottom-end on this thing(unlike the cd version).

  • One of my favorite goups, saddens me that only Michelle is still with us. Lot's of gifted talent in this group and a great legacy left in their records.

  • This is a pop masterpiece. Song like this just reinforce the sixties as the best decade for music.

  • May Denny, Cass, & John rest peacefully.

  • Wow, made in England by Decca Records for RCA Victor, neither company having rights to this act in the states.

  • Amazing melody. Found cool Mama's and Papa's stuff on a hysterical website called noveltyjoes. Check it out if you want to crack up.

  • "Go Where You Wanna Go" is one of the greatest songs of all times. I miss Cass Elliot so much. It is such a shock that only one of the original members of The Mamas & the Papaa is still alive, Michelle Phillips

    Here are the original members:

    John Phillips (1935-2001)

    Denny Doherty (1941-2007)

    Michelle Phillips (born 1944)

    Cass Elliot (1941-1974)

  • i watched a song on youtube by michelle williams called "no love today". and ever since i heard her voice singing solo it's much easier to hear her in mamas and papas songs. her voice is clearly audible in this song but i especially love when she cuts loose at the end of "twelve thirty". no doubt mama cass was the better singer but you gota love the underdog.

  • This is arguable--musically, not lyrically--their best song....

  • this song inspired christopher hitchens to go to the usa

  • @IamTHEredux

    Fortunately or unfortunately?

  • @TerryDowne I agree with a lot of what he says. He's been influential on me. I'm fairly left, but reading the works of Hitchens and others has made my thought process way more sophisticated. I'm also quite a strong atheist. As for the Iraq war...well, by 2003 we were in a losing situation no matter what we did. If US foreign policy was different for the last 50+ years then we wouldn't be so fucked. By 2003, a war was theoretically the best option, but it's clear the execution got botched badly.

  • @IamTHEredux

yeah, i remember hearing him saying that. i can see how this song would have the effect.

  • Great band. Mama C could sing !

  • They were all great !! Goodness, what a group - happy to be pre-teen/teen during their reign!!

  • @Jany1954 I am insanely jealous.

  • This song helped me decide to leave home for Calif.in 1967 just after H.S.

  • yep, travel lodge here too. Great number.

  • Tv advert brought me here too !!! The power of advertising never ceases to amaze me. Great song. Love the freedome feeling. We dont have that feeling anymore.

  • travellodge , a gangster bear and a fluffy pink bear braught me here

  • 3000 miles away and you don't want me to follow...that's cold!

  • @icecube505 thank you from a 55 yr old dude........thank you

  • How this failed to chart when it was originally released I will never no!!!

  • @swinnie16 >>> How this failed to chart when it was originally released I will never no!!! <<<<

it was not released as a 45 and during that time frame top forty a.m. radio stations played only 45's.. playing of album tracks was few and far between.

thanks for the upload of the mono version. i tried to post the stereo of this from my original toilet cover lp and it is blocked, and i mean blocked to every country in the world.

    oh well.

  • The greateast vocals.

  • the travelodge advert brought me here

  • I listen to this song about 10-15 times a day.

  • @stevierayDOM18 Good for you.

  • A good song. Does anyone else think its a little creepy in light of the whole raping his daughter thing?

  • I never dug hippie stuff, but this is so good that it transcends all boundaries. Simply beautiful harmony.

  • I really miss Denny Doherty - what a great voice he had. RIP, Denny,

  • This was one of John's amazing "revenge songs", after he realized that Michelle (once again) had been cheating on him. Hear the irony of " a girl like me could love just one man."

  • I remember I first heard this song on WQXI in Atlanta long ago

  • What can I say. Still one of my favorite groups and this is my favorite song that they did. It's hard to beleive 3 of them are gone....

  • probably because michelle never sang

  • One of the best group ever to bad they do not make music like this to day R.I.P. Mama Cass.

  • DID joHN pHILLIPS WRITE THIS SONG?

  • Their first release, from the fall of '65. This is one of my faves by them. I'm surprised it didn't chart higher than it did. Even the 5th Dimension's cover the following year only peaked at #16.

  • @billdescoteaux

According to John Phillips book, this song was only released as a promo in Hawaii. The record company then pulled it and went with California Dreaming instead. Seems ashamed it wasn't released at a later time...incredible song!!!

  • Go where you wanna go do what you wanna do.

    Hell to the yeah.

  • I've loved this song ever since i first heard it hehehe nothing like early songs on promiscuity <3

  • Awesome!!!!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG

  • cassvoice was called " the sound" by time magazine in 1966

  • Cass had the most smooth voice. I like hearing this in mono too.

    Nice video........

  • i love the mama's and papa's buuuut honestly i like grace slick's voice more....

  • @enchente Grace Slick phucked your mother with a Jimi Hendrix black vibrating dildo.

  • @yourdickis2limp

  • @yourdickis2limp LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

  • Mama Cass carried the vocals in this band. She has an unforgettable voice! Great writing by John ans nice vocals by Denny but Cass.... OMG she was good

  • @2010BeachBoy She made the Mamas and the Papas.

  • @whathoney73 You bet! Best female voice of the 60's

  • Certainly one of my top, lets say 15 of all time. Barrel down a country road on a nice day with this blasting, tit will take care of all the ills for a bit.

  • I still have the album (33 rpm vinyl for the kids - look it up: No disrespect intended). Song was from before my daughter was made and she's 43. I saw these guys live in Toronto many decades ago in Maple Leaf Gardens. Sob. Also the Beatles twice. Fuck I'm old!

  • @wanker4761 lucky old wanker.

  • Your music lives on great stuff

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever written.

  • I'll bet they smoked some pretty good dope.

  • My goodness, isn't her royal highness, EmpressElectro, a bitter know-it-all? Acutally, Michelle could sing very well and sang with John and Denny in the New Journeymen before the M&P's. She wasn't just a "hippie chick John picked up," but she was his wife at the time and co-wrote several of their big hits.

Yes, Cass was the star - both her voice and size very distinctive. But don't be so foolish as to minimize Michelle's contribution to the music or the group's popularity.

  • God, I love the Mamas and Papas, heard them on radio and people's houses during their era. So, so great. I have this thought, that if Michelle, and either her daughter, or Cass' daughter (both are pro singers), plus Scott McKenzie and someone related to John or Denny or even John Sebastian, could reform and tour, a lot of people would like it. I met a man last year, who was their drummer for studio and their first tour. He worked for Phil Spector of course, and I gained great info about Mamas.

  • I love this group.Its the best.

  • still sing this to my daughter after all this time. it get's the message thru' to live you life the way you want to live it, not how others tell you to live it

  • the words still apply today, everyone should do as the lyrics say

  • I love this song!

  • Classic Gold.

  • This song helped me decide to leave Rosemount Minn. in 1967 when I was 18, and move to Calif. where I still live today.John class of '66

  • This is the song that made me a Mamas 7 Papas song in the first place.

  • If this song is not the anthem of its times, I don't know what is.

  • john said they did less than 90 live appearances. he considered them a studio band. but you can't say michelle can't sing. maybe she wasn't a solo performer but her voice and cass's melded and the rest is rock and roll history.

  • I saw all the performences on YouTube concerning Monterey Pop, but there is no performance of songs where Michelle sings solo: "Go where you wanna go",

"String man", "Dedicated to the one I love",

    I wonder why.

  • The Mand Ps rarerly pllayed live gigs...i doubt they had rehearsed much more than they played at Monterey

    Jim

  • @captainsoul1953 actualy members of the band have admitted to not rehearsing before thier montery performance

  • @captainsoul1953 the album cover at 0:04 is a secound pressing since the toilet is covered by the sign the 5th dimension recorded this song

  • Comment removed

  • @vakantieland4 She also sings lead in "The Right Somebody to Love," and "I Wanna Be a Star."

  • @bluenail03 Yes, but that was from their LP "People like us" from 1971. And Monterey is from 1967 of 1968.

  • @vakantieland4 And to think they were a group for three years!

  • listen to cass alone, then listen to cass and michelle, two different vocal sounds. michelle brought a lot to the party. the woman could sing.

  • Michelle could definitely sing. I can pick her voice out in their songs, Cass had a much stronger voice but Michelle still gave her part with passion, their harmonies were something else.

  • I don't agree with the idea that Michelle couldn't sing (really?) but her voice was a big part of the group's awesome harmonies. And yes, Cass had a great voice.

  • My Favourite M & Ps song

  • Look thru my window

  • Argus Slayer I totally agree.

And yes it does bring me right back to that pure and happy era of early childhood.

Check out "Words of Love" another great forgotten classic.

  • I remember this one from my early childhood. It's quite catchy. Their best track together with "california dreaming" and "monday, monday".

  • I don't detect any radical differences between this and the stereo mix, unlike "I Saw Her Again" where the vocals on the mono single are much more up front.

  • That's because it's RCA release of it. Dunhill Mono versions are different. There's even RCA Mono release of Papas&Mamas which was never released in mono by Dunhill records.

  • The cover version by The 5th Dimension is a close copy of this one.

  • @cmulwee001

That didn't stop their version from being a hit in 1967. Unfortunately this original M&P version failed miserably.

  • Nice... !

  • Anyone know if John wrote this about Michelle, in the early days of their relationship; discourage her from getting too attached? She got her way - took from his wife. Then she had an affair with Denny.

  • He wrote the song after she'd taken him and had the affair.

  • I believe that this was the song that made Lou Adler a believer.

  • my personal favorite of the m&ps...I think the chorus of this song defined the period. "Go where you wanna go, do what you wanna do"

  • Beyond awesome

  • Brings back so many memories! I'm only 24 years old, but I can remember my dad playing this when I was very young! This was real music! This song sounds good when you have ur volume turned full!

  • Masterpiece

  • Michelle Phillips couldn't sing! she was just some young hippie chick John Phillips picked up and married...they had to mix her vocals considerably in the studio...Cass Elliott is the marvel.

  • YES!!!

I'm so glad to see somebody else share my opinion. Michelle Phillips can't sing and if weren't for her undying attempts at trying to look so "cute", then people would have forgot that she was even in the band!!!

Cass Elliot, Denny, and John were always the better singers. I don't have anything against Michelle, I have no hatred for her at all, but really she couldn't sing at all. And yes, Mama Cass is the jewel in this band.

    :)

  • @madeyes4u I am a big fan of this fantastic group, but Michelle indeed just was the eye candy. I even dislike her voice on String man. Nevertheless, she inspired John to write fenomenal songs.

  • Maybe Michelle wasn't as good as Cass, but saying she couldn't sing at all is a ridiculous statement. Her voice was part of the group's awesome harmonies. And yes, Cass had an incredible voice.

  • @EmpressElectro And Cass was fat...who cares?

  • @EmpressElectro You are very, very, very wrong. How old were you at that time? Have you no clue to the function of vocal harmony? Think before you expose your ignorance so blatantly. The subtlety of Michelle's contribution was comparable to Ringo's drumming in the Beatles.
