The reason that the capstan turns in rewind is because the tape is constantly against it which would eventually result in flat areas forming on the capstan shaft. Keeping it rotating causes the wear to be uniform on the shaft.
Great machine. The mechanism is almost identical to that of the Panasonic RQ-705 mono Hi-Fi from 1967-68. You can keep the meters from dropping out with a little "adhesive putty" on the frame that holds them. Scotch makes it. It is removable and doesn't harden over time. Nice video on the workings of the machine! THANKS for the video.
That was neat, the same as the inside of mine, too. The jacks for mine are on the top instead of the side as the speakers are separate. And, WOOO! BLOOPERS!!! Funny to see them at the end! And the last one in REVERSE!! That was awesome! You videos are AWESOME!!
