  • I can't even watch this video because of a big black window that appears to be a broken ad covers the player.

Wait, let me try clicking this: 00:10

  • Just wondering why you have chain on your wrists!?

  • If I had found these when you were building the giant robot I would have recommended starting with a winch and a pulley hanging from the ceiling.

  • I think you really could have used some form of harness to help you, thats how the Romans built enormous structures using their bare hands. Would multiply your strength a hundredfold.

  • when will the next video be out?

  • if you disliked this you suck :P

  • -.-

  • You know i've been watching several of your robot videos and I think you are awesome!! Plus I noticed you look like a mixture of Dr. House and Nicholas Cage. You should share your idea with the science channel and possibly get extra funds!!!

  • You need to use some of those sturdy logs and build an A-Frame buuuddy!! Lift THE GIAN ROBOT !!!

  • Jaimie have you test driven the GIANT ROBOT yet ?

  • You should have a TV show. Just sayin'.

  • ummm.... i do! You're watching it. :-P

ha ha, I know what you mean, though. That would be cool, but I'm not holding my breath on that one! ha ha

  • Just checked the tags ... why is "boobies" a tag? :D

  • Because they're 2 of my favourite things...??? duh!

  • Why not build a Pyramid thing with a pully system and just latch it on the robot and suspend it off the ground to work on the legs.

it's like a car lift but this is a robot lift.

  • @DanteCosplayer Yeah I would totally use some kind of body support to the roof whilst letting the robot stand, just in case there was a " disaster" ( which i doubt from Jaimie) Like an engine lift. it just has to be a basic tripod support or even joined to the roof to support the main body of the robot . Just my suggestion .. im just a barn kid.. not a robot builder XD

  • I'm concerned that the structure of the quonset hut might buckle if significant weight were suspended from it. We are back to the question of robot weight.

  • the point is to get the leg attachments lower than the body of the robot so you can attach them properly, right? instead of lifting the whole thing to accomplish this, maybe you could dig mini trenches under each leg to sink them down, and them fill them up again nice and easy, seeing as the banana building seems to have simple dirt as flooring :)

the way i see it, this would be easier than lifting the robot :D

  • This seems like a good idea to me, too. But I wonder, looking at the way that the toy prototype moves, whether or not that would create difficulties extracting the legs from the trenches.

  • i would inch the legs up, one by one, little by little, and refill the trenches periodically. like a couple inches at a time, one leg at a time

  • ohhhhhhhhhhh

i might've answered the wrong question...

did you mean that the legs would move diagonally (into the trench walls) rather than straight up? in that case i would get my trusty shovel out and keep diggin till it works ;)

  • You might be on to something. :) Do everything in safe increments. I guess each of the three trenches would proceed radially from under the "knee" and outward. Crank Backfill Tamp Crank Backfill Tamp Etc. That might be the safest approach. One would love to see the spectacular "just turn the crank with the vice grips till it rights itself" video. But better safe than sorry.
  • Wait! Idaanne is my wife. I accidentally accessed this under her account!

Anyway, thinking about the little prototype, I wonder if it could be used to test a procedure like this in miniature?

I think it's either dig and backfill under the feet, or build adjustable supports under the rest of the robot as it is cranked up from it's present position. Digging seems like less work.

  • Idea: what about attaching a pulley to the ceiling so that you can hoist the robot up maybe with a hand crank. Might be a complicated solution though.

  • yeah, didn't you even make som metal thingies go down the top of the roof in case you wanted to make a krane-lift-hand crank thing anyway?

  • looking good you need yourself a hoist maybe a tripod? anyway like the hammer

  • Is there no way to prop up the middle while you are working and just have the legs hang off?

  • "When you're going through hell, keep going." - Winston Churchill =)

  • Ohh... miss robot building expert. :-P Mind coming over with a few spare step ladders!? heh heh. That would be super!

  • I DO have space to build. Do you need to come over and borrow some space???

  • When you get minions you should arm them with mallets, that would be sweet.

  • WOO! Good thinking! I can teach them to arm themselves with mallets. Even minions can do that!

  • @JMEMantzel ever just want to shake your fist and say "MEEENIONS!!!"?

    its a wonderful feeling.

  • Chanmailed minions with mallets issuing forth from the domed mountains. The shock troops and canon fodder that are unleased before the Giant Robot wreaks robot havoc!

  • That sounds awesome, were can I sign up. *looks around for the minion signup sheet**

  • btw Professor Mantzel, have you or will you add some 'springs' to the legs' feet so that the steps get some cushioning?

(I bet my english was a total fail - well, hope you get my point at least)

  • Hmm.... "professor"??? Does that mean you're swedish!? ;-) I keep hearing about your amazing girls over there.

...and yes. I do have plans for springy feet. I don't want the foot impacts to wreck everything. :-)

  • why yes, yes I am a Swede! *proud* X) [on a side note, I think it's hilarious that 'swedes' with a lower case 's' is a vegetable, hahah]

well, we've got some sweet chicks here for sure, but I would stay away from the blonde ones, they're not as perfect as the rumour goes D:

awesome! good to hear you've thought it through and also that you've got COMFORT in mind! ;D

  • You're doing a good job.

  • Love the hammer, keep up the great work.

  • Ya. The forest makes awesome mallets. :-)

  • youtube

  • Keep 'em coming man looks great

  • oh the suspense! can't wait to see this together, great work!

  • Ya. I'm on the fence. I'm eager to get to the next part. ....but wary of disaster. :-P

  • Nice work!

Can't wait till it's standing on all six legs!

  • It's looking good man.

  • :DDDD Been a while JME!

  • YAY!!
