either this or the scene at the end of "my mistake" (i think) where you find out Ben S was dead all along is the best scene in the whole of scrubs. Both are amazingly acted and written
I watched this episode when my grandfather was in hospital and my mum freaked out when she saw it because of him. I told her that it wasn't true for him and then a couple of weeks later, he died. Like the people that died in this episode, it was unexpected and out of everyone's hands. A month after his death, I watched this again and started crying and tomorrow will be one year since his death. I miss you grandad.
Oh God, I'll never forget this... this whole scene is just devastating right up until that last part where Dr. Cox turns around with tears in his eyes - then it rips my heart out. And the episode itself is flooring the way its tone changes, IIRC. It starts out silly and goofy and then BAM, sucker-punch.
Scrubs: Hilarious, meme filled and famous across the nation. Also known for making medicine one of the most dramatic and depressing things to be seen on television.
Normally I like JD's "moral of the story" at the end but this scene was absolutely perfect without it and i'm glad they didn't ruin it by putting it in.
This is the only time a TV show has ever made me cry, I'm not exactly sentimental but I wanted to be a doctor and I could...feel it, I knew how it was to rarely make a mistake and then do something so horrible and it just resonated with me...so sad.
In February my grandfather died. It was such a shock and unexpected that everyone we knew was shocked as well. In March I watched this scene again and I cried and now today after so long it reminded me of him and I cried again. I miss him so much
Dr. Cox's acting is definitely extremely powerful, but Carla's facial expressions during the cardiac arrest scene make the scene so much more saddening. 5 stars hands down.
Yes! I think the same thing about Carla's facial expression, she seems terribly sad herself from seeing Dr. Cox actually being affected by something. Awesome scene, I can't watch this episode near people..or else I'd just embarrass myself :P.
@TheCamelor Think it was more of the music and the moment that made it seem like his performance was strong. Honestly, I would be shaking with frustration and be demolished onto the floor if that happened.
My favourite show of all time. I still watch the re-runs and the dvds every now and then. The show just does not get old. I can't wait for my unborn child to grow up and I can watch this with them :)
God. This is the most intense moment in television I've ever seen (admittedly I don't watch that much, but, hey). I'm sorta bummed when this episode plays and there are people watching Scrubs with me, because they get to see me cry like a baby.
"Once you start blaming yourself for deaths that aren't your fault, my friend, that's a slippery slope that you can't come back from." Best show ever.
Just watching this makes me fear the day, 9 years from now, when i´m, hopefully, a doctor and has to deal with death. I´m just happy to have watched scrubs because i think it´s gonna make me more ready not just to becoming a doctor but also to becoming a person...
@Milkmebebe Wow you really are a happy guy aren´t you?
First of all, even though it shouldn´t matter at all, i´m not black.
Considering your racism, hate of every small problem and fear of emotions i would guess you are 50-60 something, fat, jobless, KKK-member from Dallas whos lost a family member or friend, if you ever had any, because a young black doctor made some mistake. You should just stick your head in a barrel and allow the rest of the world to keep on going.
Do you even have any compasion at all? Or are you just an idiot who wanks of to five year old girls passing by the street while you yell at the society for not helping you enough after droping out of school to becoming a professional jackass who noone cares about. Get some help before you end up hurting somebody!!!
this episode and this part are my favorite, everytime i watch it i want to cry.
shows like scrubs made me want to take Medical Foundations and enter the medical field after the Military, these people are amazing. if your a doctor and reading this, you and all of your peers are amazing people, i want to do something in return but everytime something comes to mind...its not good enough.
have saved a total of 5 different lives, putting mine in danger each and every time. i have been asked would i do it again, my answer was yes. i could not live with the guilt of not helping someone in need, what if that person was your brother, your sister, your bestfriend? what if you were the one in need? i know how to save a life do you?
This is based on a true story by the way. Three patients actually did die from organ transplants that contained rabies in 2004... it makes this all the more powerful...
and with how dr cox reacted, watching a person that he had formed a friendship with die in front of him. it just added so much more emphasis on the complexities of human emotions.
This is why I would never be able to be a actor. I would never be able to take the pressure of faking life/death decisions and have to watch people pretend to die.
Every few months when I rediscover my "the fray" folder and hear this song again I look up this video, and everytime it's just as touching and mind blowing as the last time. Definitely one of the best emotional moments in any show or movie I have ever seen.
The fray song is so cliche and im so over it, it gets no emotional response from me, but when you put it to something like this, on a show I love, with characters you can empathise with it makes it so much more meaningful, this episode was awesome
I remember seeing this scene and I'm not really a scrubs fan, but this really made me feel emotional. The idea that Dr Cox and the whole show seems to be all up beat and funny, though particular parts bring out the emotion and stress involved in casualty.
When their beepers go, the expression on Coxs face when he says "Oh God" was painful to look at. Add to that the weight of losing a friend of his (the third patient) who couldve gotten by for another while without a kidney just made it all the more difficult to see. Goes to show even the most sarcastic straight talking S.O.B can feel pain too.

Im a lifeguard...i can barely handle the pressure that if i screw up...it could be the death of a child. But if i do everything i can to try and save them, i will still blame myself and question "Is there anything i could have done?..."
I agree. Doctors are fucking amazing for being able to go through every single day knowing that.

This is why I would never be able to be a doctor. I would never be able to take the pressure of making life/death decisions and have to watch people die.
Doctors are fucking amazing.
