Leaving the past behind -- cold and empty cities of the heart. Leaving a seemingly-never ending winter for the Hope and Promise of an Eternal Springtime. Trying to repair what is seemingly unrepairable -- a shattered heart and dreams. Trying to deal with the death of someone you love deeper than Time. What a fantastic tune!
If I'm goinna die, can I do it listening to this song, please? The voice, the lyrics, the guitar, the atmosphere....CREAM!!! Come back one more time, guys, Jack, let us hear that soulful voice no one can match...loved you then, we love you now.
@keepitkreamy But look at it this way: thank God others before us preserved this music and other classics like it so they would never die and we could keep on listening to them...
Life magazine article in early summer 68 on the New Rock neatly summed up Cream "triple speed blues expansions " Clearly Cream was in a league of their creation. It wasn't just ferocity of thier performance battles, but it did kick off, in the vacuum left by the departure, a succession of styles -punk ,metal then their derivatives ,that mistook playing faster & faster still for passion.
I first kissed the woman I would be with for 17 years way back in 1991 with this song playing in my head, as a 16 year old willdchild. My two kids from our time together already love the Cream, What's not to like?!
Love this song, and your visuals are good to see. Have been into this song since it came out. I especially love the drum and strings segments-what a great sound blend
74sodapop: I've yakked on and on about this song because I love it so much and it's been very important in my life for decades, but I apologize for not commenting sooner on the haunting visuals you provided; truly awesome.
I've read that, with Cream, Bruce (the most accomplished composer/songwriter of the trio) tended to dominate in the studio and Clapton, with his fiery and unmatchable ability to carry the melody and improvise, tended to dominate in live performance (in their brief '66-'68 heyday, Cream were considered the best live band, bar none). Bruce was also a multi-instrumentalist, like Brian Jones in the '63-'69 Stones, moving from one ax to another to build just the right sounds.
My favorite Cream song; relentless beat, Jack Bruce on acoustic guitar, Clapton's solo, the cello breaks (also courtesy of Bruce), the haunting lyrics delivered by Bruce in his most operatic voice. Maybe not one of the most well-known, but still one of the best. Bruce co-wrote this one with Peter Brown, his collaborator on a number of songs.
I once heard that this song originally had about twelve verses and was supposed to be something like thirty minutes long but they had to shorten it for the record.

Those cities are long since gone and behind. Days of the ancients. But an occassional looking back gives a vista of ... deserted cities of the heart
