WHY would you connect a hub motor to the bottom bracket????? Lace it to a wheel and SKIP that extra chain, ratchet and motor mounts. LOTS easier doing it that way!
i think this is a great home-made. Can you tell me how and where to get the CRANK like on your bike ? And how much ? I've been looking all over for a Crank like that but never saw until i see this video ! thank you , now I know it exists !
I think this is a great home-made ! Can you tell me where to get the Crank like your bike ? I've been looking all over for it but never come acorss one until i see yours ! Plsssssssssss tell me how and where to get it and how much does it cost ? Thank you so much !
Reminds me alot of the StokeMonkey. I recently saw someone use the Currie electroDrive [spoke drive} as a crank drive with only 24 volts! Some how the crankdrive seems like a much more efficient application than a wheel hub or spoke drive to me now. Any reason why?
Yes -my inspiration was based on the Stokemonkey, but i didn't want to pedal :-)
Crankdrive are really good for torque and i find having more voltage and less current is good for your batteries as well.Plus you can get lower amp rated batteries which is heaps cheaper.
Crankdrive is a bit noisier than hub or spoke drive and great for hilly areas. If you lived in mainly flat areas the hub/spoke is the way to go.
Hmm.. I have the bionx and the Currie spokedrive 24v . The inherent limits are torque and set revs as gears are not connected. Although they're great and I don't yet own a crankdrive , my searches and laymans logic say the overall package is the crank system ,as it assists at any speed as long as one has the gears for it.
I plan on getting a speed bike frame, then hooking up a high output motor, with a couple alternators to charge a seperate battery or to charge the battery while i am using it.
But i think alternatornators are better than a petrol motor to charge the batterires. Just because it involves more emagination. And i hate using gasoline. lol
See, if u can tell how many amps you are drawing from the motor, there is hight output alternators. You can put more amps in than u put out. Or u can charge a seperate battery with those alternators while the seperate battery is powering the motor.
Would u ever consider putting an alternator or two to charfe a seperate battery while u use a battery, then when that battery dies, u can switch it with the one that was getting charged. that is my idea for an electric bike
Hi there, curious about your rear hub, is that like those old sturmey archer or suntour 3 speed hubs that were so popular in the 70s-80s only with more speeds???
Oh my gosh are you going to be OK? I'm so sorry to here about your accident. How fast did you clock yourself? Here is hoping for a speedy recovery and getting back into action. Cheers man!
Nevermind... I read a little further... it lets yopu use the gears of the bike. Interesting. But I love the idea of a sealed hub, with no moving parts.
very pretty, i want to build the same thing but cant find any freewheel front cranks. i plan on using a currie motor i already have but same drive setup. where did you get your front crankset?
doesn't the rotor's rotational inertia, at this gear ratio, make the bike too heavy (compared to the original bike, without the electrics) to speed up while using only the pedals?
There is a freewheel on the motor and crank -so everything is independent -just like pedaling a normal bike -apart from the weight of motor and batteries.
Hey Cool bike but just one question how tolerant is a typical ebike system to crashes and is it legal in the USA, I ask because I myself am considering getting an electric bike. I got a few others but I dont want to overwhelm you : )

Have you got alot of hills around your way?
There are a few 17deg hills around my place which i regularly ride -that was why i went with the crankdrive.
Otherwise the hubdrive at 48V20A in a 26" wheel was fine -still had to pedal but was good moderate exercise.
Have you looked at BMC brushless geared hub motors for example? Or BMC motor kits that are similar to your Currie?
Cheers

Is it what it looks like? ( completely DIY )
The motor seems to be a brushless outrunner.
buchnermarkus 3 years ago
Hi mate
Yes -all DIY
Motor is a hub motor with the spoke flanges cut off
poobardog 3 years ago
Brushed or brushless?
Does it have 2 or 3 wires?
buchnermarkus 3 years ago
Brushless
It is a Crystalyte motor
Now using a 408/4011

Hi Chris
I was going to use a petrol motor as propulsion and generator to charge batteries for the electric motor, but the bike was massively overweight.
Would be a good idea with a trike i think.
Good luck though

Yes ,it's a Shimano Nexus8(speed) -gives a really good torque range for hills and such

Legs are healing well -prolly 3 more weeks and off the stix.
Was doing about 45kmh no brakes.
I'm going to go a bit slower in the future -30kmh would have give me some reaction time.

how long do the power last
quickstart20o7 4 years ago
I can get around 35klms without pedaling -distance increases of course the more you pedal.

Dershnof 4 years ago
But why would you not use the hub-motor as the front hub? Don't you add friction with the chain, and expose it to rocks and sand, water, etc?
OregonDARRYL 4 years ago
Nevermind... I read a little further... it lets yopu use the gears of the bike. Interesting. But I love the idea of a sealed hub, with no moving parts.
OregonDARRYL 4 years ago
Hi Daryl
Used just as a hubmotor on the front -it won't get up alot of hills without major pedalling. 99% of hills i don't have to pedal if i don't want.
A "Puma" geared hub is better on the front.
poobardog 4 years ago
I read that most people would ride bikes if they didn't have to peddle up hill, so the electric motor would greatly help that issue.

Have a look at cyclone-usa in miscellaneous parts -you need the cyclone crankset and freewheel adaptor. Will have to rig the chainrings.

Seanisthebest1 4 years ago
Hey Sean -i'm from Australia -nothing is legal here LOL
There are alot of stealth ebike systems that you can get that are fairly powerful -legality in USA seems to be different in every state.
I've crashed lots - just have to make sure the batteries are well protected.

Or - can I offer you money to make me some? :)

drives thru the gears for good takeoff and hillclimbing
