  • You can't go to jail for that, in the United States at least. There isnt a law against useing a Cell Phone, but the airlines can kick you off a plane for it. Its not a law because even when scientists magnified the signal to 100 times its intensity it still didn't interfere with its Navigation Systems.

  • lol n00b. Get your info straight before you post. There's bans from both the FCC and the FAA on cellphone use during flight because of the 800mhz frequency use and potential interference thing. You can use cellphones while on the ground, or in "airplane mode" during flight, but not actively signed onto any network while in the air. Look it up and educate yourself.

  • There is an analogue system using magnetics that is used when landing in low/zero-sight. It helps the pilot keeping track of the plane's leaning. Old cellphones (pre-GSM?) DID interfere with that system and could sometimes put the needle completely off chart. It's a possibility that a broken new one phone could do that also. Instead of having different rules for different seats and different periods of the flight, it's much easier to just ban phones altogether.
