Easy to tell a Griffon from a Merlin even by closing your eyes and listening. The Griffon has a relatively low frequency gargling or pulsating sound to it whereas the Merlin doesn't. It can be heard more easily from 1.28 onwards but in-flight is at about 10hz depending on speed of course. Listen to 1.21 and 3.36 in YouTube clip 'rlIGQ6pnlvQ'
@Naoko1960 Pretty obvious it's a Griffon. Merlins rotate counter-clockwise (viewed from front of aircraft) and Griffons rotate clockwise. Merlins also don't have a high enough HP output to turn a 5 bladed propeller efficiently.
You can always tell a Griffon-engined Spitfire in flight from the two rectangular bumps on the engine cowling on the starboard and aft top side to accommodate the larger heads on the Griffon engine.
@GGigabiteM right in both answers ,, when you have heard many of these fine engines, and only will search the sound you can hear the difference between these two dif engines sorry the spelling i am from Denmark.....
@zog97xy The only thing why the Spitfires shoted down all of the BF109es is that there were like 8spitfire against 4 Escorter ME109 and some bombers. In the Battle of Britan the Naci Escorters were outnumbered compared to the British airplanes. Oh and also the HE-111 was made for Blitzkrieg not for strategic bombing so it had less defense blablabla. Between the ME109 is a beautiful plane afterall but this video is about the spitfire.... Why we have to speak about the ME109 then? xD
@mr9396 maybe you should read what i put down before you vent off, i said early in the war the luftwaffe out numbered the raf but not by 1943 so YOU get your facts right
@mr9396 what in 1943 the luftwaffe had more aircraft than the RAF?? bullshit. The RAF had not just british planes in service such as , hurricanes, spitfire, mosquito, lancaster, sterling, wellington, beaufighter, blenheim, beaufort but also p-51, p-40, p-47, b-17, b-24,b-25, your trying to tell me the germans had more aircraft what a load of rubbish.
@JOHNO4992 I don't know exactly why it turns counter-clockwise, but some british aeroengines turn this way, for example the De Havilland Gipsy series.
@JOHNO4992 I read that it was because the griffon was designed for naval aircraft, so that the torque of the engine pulled the aircraft away from the tower on an aircraft carrier rather than towards it
Yes, it really did. The only Griffon Spitfire with a four blades prop was the Mk XII, (besides some prototypes and later naval types). Some had contra props too!
I saw a Griffon powered Mk XIV being test flown out of Whenuapai (NZ) back in 1994 after being re-assembled out of it's shipping crate. (For the owner, Sir Tim Wallis of Wanaka).
The test pilot really pit it through its paces - and it simply went like a cat with it's tail on fire. It's speed and climbing ability were astonishing.
the spitfire was fast and agile even with 8 machineguns on board, the German bomber crews feared it, there has been records found of Luftwaffe pilots saying it was there worst nightmare.
things to do before I die : no.1 Have sex while flying a spitfire
P.S. probably a cool way to die too !?!?!

Yes a beauty of a plane - but the men that flew them are more stunning - all countries.
That must have been terrifying but they all still did it for us!

The Mk 19 was a Photo Reconn aircraft, and as such was unarmed

so that was why it was so fast? if they put weapons on it the top speed wouldnt be that impressive?
