Tarawa was a bloody, hellacious battle, but it wasn't close to being the "bloodiest" battle in the Pacific. Alot of others battles - Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Guadalcanal, and the Phillipines, for instance - resulted in higher casualties.
Um...guys, it's not "our" government that's letting the place go to sh!t (assuming by "our" you mean the US). Not only is it not now an American territory, it never was - it was a British colony before it became independent. Plus, you're talking about a tiny island with no resources (including water) that was devastated by a war that it had no real involvement in besides being in a strategic location between the two belligerents. Some of the other islands were used for nuke tests too.

Australian High Commisioner. Never heard about Tarawa before then.
It is ashame that Betio has not been considered a complete grave site.
I believe that because of the tropical heat, all bodies had to be buried very
quickly, preventing diseases, thus no grave sites.
When attenting a B-B-Q one evening in 1985 I was told that many remains
